Open Wheel Racing 2021, anyone there to watch?

It sounds like this is pairing the F1TV subscription with Apple, so is that the end of the SkySports simulcast? If so, that’s a shame. I’ve heard F1TV provides a good product but I like Crofty and the rest of the Sky team.

I think F1 doesn't really care about the nominal TV viewer F1 fan. The individual fan doesn't really give them any money. Whatever means they can do to make the most money is all that matters. Especially in the US- looking at Miami and Vegas as race events, they are more to be seen at than see a race. Meaning they appeal to people who think their appearance is what matters- which is mostly super rich people.

Many US fans survived many years with basically an F1 blackout when ESPN dropped them to Speed Vision many years ago. Same thing all over again until Apple decides they don't want to pay for sports like how NBC decided that having a sports channel isn't worth it.
There is a realization that I believe a lot of us need to understand: Casual, “nominal” TV viewers do not exist in the numbers that there used to be. The “mono culture”, the kind where everyone talks about something at the water cooler, doesn’t really exist anymore. Nearly everything these days is a niche. That’s what F1 is leaning into. If you want to watch it, you’ll find a way to watch it. The idea that you need to be on a channel like ESPN in the hopes that someone will just stick around and watch is antiquated.

Did those ever exist for F1? I worked at Ford Motor Company for 30 years, and remember only a handful of people who cared about F1... (not including the ones who actually did work with F1 that I knew)

And I VERY much remember going to an autocross the day that Senna crashed, and I asked the guy I was working a corner with if he had heard any update and he had no idea who Senna was. A guy who raced his car didn't know who one of the best F1 drivers of all time even was when he was racing.

Sounds like the reality check for us when we are reminded 99.7% of the population neither knows nor cares about college hockey.

Thank god.

You can choose the Sky Sports simulcast on F1 TV. You can also choose nearly every major language on F1 TV. (One time, for a reason I never was able to explain, my F1 TV flipped to Dutch. When I finally figured out how to choose a language, that's when I realized it was on Dutch.)

Recently, I worked with a guy who was into autocrossing. One day at work, I brought up F1. He essentially shut me down right away. He said he doesn't car whatsoever about any racing, never watches it, doesn't give a crap. At all. But he liked autocrossing his car. And he was, by all accounts, a car guy overall. But not racing. Blew me away.
