Open Wheel Racing 2021, anyone there to watch?

Despite having signed a two year extension, Perez is in violation of a performance clause in his contract that could see him let go by summer break.

If Red Bull actually had some good driver choices (talk about the proverbial the cupboard is empty), Perez would have been toast a long time ago. The fact that he could still be toast with such poor choices to replace him shows you how horrible Perez has been. My wife said yesterday I should raise my hand at this point...

Having seen drivers get canned for being bad only for them to show up someplace else and do well tells me that the Perez issue isn’t fully on his shoulders. Sure, he’s not doing as good as before- but how much of that is because of team led issues? Meaning that changing drivers isn’t going to likely do much.

That's always a question for the number two driver at Red Bull no matter wow the number one driver is.

I’ve seen a few people say this is why Sainz trying to jump to Red Bull might not be in his best interest. That and apparently the dads don’t like each other.

My impression of Sainz Sr. is he could wipe the floor with Jos. He's not a wife to be face-slammed into a counter.

I'd kinda like to see that.

He’s a much, much, much more important driver than Jos. A real legend.

Let alone, not a total a hole.

Great defending by Lewis today on Max. Ended up with Max attempting another rage move that burned him again.

McLaren somehow turned a great day into drama. Pitting Norris before Piastri and then spending 20 laps begging Norris to give the lead back.

One more race before summer break. Red Bull has looked more and more vulnerable and Perez didn't help himself with a crash in Q1.

Hope that max really gets into the faces of the race stewards. So the penalty becomes time and points.

Why did Norris have to acquiesce to team orders? That was bullshit. “ I know you’ll do the right thing?”Norris should have fired back “I race to win!” And stood on the gas like Senna.

Going to watch the replay, but I'm betting McLaren had a real gentlemen's honor of who is ahead in corner one. Reminding all of us that Lando really, really, really needs to work on his starts.

Got it. That’s exactly like Senna/Prost, but I don’t well, I think Senna disregarded the agreement and that cemented the end of that relationship between drivers.

I think that's exactly what they had. First pit stops they were already telling Lando his race was with Max even though he was only three or so seconds behind Piastri.

Team orders are team orders, but I can't blame Lando for being upset. It's not his fault they called him in first when it was clear the undercut was working better all day. Or that Piastri went off track twice. Or that Lando was faster the final third of the race when both had clean air. And then they spend a half hour guilt tripping him into swapping positions when he's the one who's closer in the WDC and either way they finished would yield the same WCC results.

FIA may have some inconsistent rulings when it comes to penalties, but at least they're on the ball when it comes to throwing out yellows and safety cars. NASCAR just let a car sit on the back stretch for half a lap so they could get to the last lap to throw the caution in OT and end it instead of going to a third overtime restart. If that happens any other time during the race they throw it instantly.

One more thing- this was a team call for Lando to cover off Hamilton, it wasn't meant to pass Piastri. And then they held Oscar out a really long time instead of one lap to "cover" Norris. So on top of the start pass, none of those calls were meant to make a pass, they were to preserve their position.

Sure, Oscar made some errors, but Lando has done that in the past, too. If the "covering Hamilton" move was a try to pass Oscar, then it would be a fair pass.

Man, Max was insane on the radio, today. The team came up with a decent plan for Max to be the fastest car at the end, but he whined about it the entire time. And then complained that he had to actually pass cars on merit. Nice that his team stood up to him.

I'll respond with one post instead of replying to a bunch.

1) Team orders are team orders. They've been in F1 forever. And Norris knows that Piastri is good enough that if the team decides to back him all out, Norris is screwed. That's why he finally backed off. Like the engineer said, he proved his point. Now, do the agreed upon team thing.
2) This was none of the drivers' fault. So, I'm not upset with either one nor begrudge the way Piastri won his first race. The team screwed up. McLaren keeps tripping over their own dicks with their strategy.
3) Saying they were covering Hamilton was ridiculous. Norris came out five seconds ahead. How much more time could he possibly have lost if he ran one more lap (if they pitted Piastri first)? A second? Two seconds at most? Even if they totally botched it, the McLaren was way faster than Red Bull, so seeing Max having trouble passing Hamilton should not have been in the equation. Any McLaren was going to zip by Hamilton especially when you consider it would have had newer tires than Hamilton. See my previous statement on McLaren strategy...
4) I was shocked, though thoroughly enjoyed, how GP b*tchslapped Verstappen. He essentially called him childish in front of the world. The only thing I can think of is how is Jos going to react...? (Well, that and whether Max will ever learn.)
