Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

They are taking the COVID19 outbreak more seriously? China has canceled, remember. And there's some concerns that some of the teams will have travel restrictions.

You totally missed my joke.

NOBODY goes to the Bahrain GP. Ever. In any year. For any reason.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

Ok with Australia only 5 days away, how about some predictions for who finishes where.
I've got Williams last and Mercedes first.

Knowing that Mercedes did the same kind of testing this year as last, it does appear that they are even faster than before. So yea, I'd agree with that.

But I suspect that Alfa Romeo or Haas will be at the back of the field, and Williams can turn up the volume- I'm betting that they figured out what the correlation issue was. Maybe it's just hope.

BTW, we are not including cars that get crashed out, right? If your car dies on the track, last. If Max knocks you into the wall- not last.

It will be interesting to see how Ferrari really looks- as I suspect Red Bull may be #2 this season. And depending on what Racing Point and McLaren do- perhaps there will be some other colors than red in the top 6.

The one team I really want to do well is Haas, though. If they struggle, no chance for them to be there next season. If they do well, and get a lot of prize money, then it will be interesting to see how Dallara makes their car for next season, given their many years of making ground effects cars. Right now, I give the 2021 benefit to Mercedes and Racing Point, to a lesser degree, for their chassis understanding of a "flat" car, and Haas a benefit due to Dallara's experience.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

ok here's mine for the end of the year. Manufacturers standings.
1. Mercedes 2. Red Bull 3. Renault. 4.Ferrari 5. Force India, 6. McLaren, 7. Haas, 8. Alpha Tauri, 9. Alfa Romeo, 10. Williams.

I'd put Force India higher based on the quality of the car, but the drivers make too many mistakes. Renault will be much improved. Overall every team will be faster by a lot and it will be tighter also of course.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

McLaren withdrew from the Australian GP due to one of it's team testing positive for COVID19- https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/1...ithdraw-from-aus-gp-after-positive-virus-test

I suppose that makes it a non-championship race? If it even happens?

One McLaren member tested positive.
Two Haas members tested positive.
In total, five members of the F1 paddock tested positive.

I don't see how Australia allows this race to go on, considering the F1 paddock just brought the virus into their country (I know it's already been there, but this is another potential outbreak they brought).

Heck, most likely most of these teams will get quarantined before they are even allowed to leave.

I also believe Bahrain is now off (despite the no fans edict) and Vietnam will be forced to cancel. China is already out. Zandvoort is the best opportunity to start the season, if we're lucky.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

12 Hours of Sebring postponed till November!

WEC pulled the plug first, mainly because most of their teams' personnel will not be able to travel to the U.S.

IMSA then did for similar reasons -- so many drivers are still in Europe. Not to mention the ramifications of 100,000 people congregating together.

Don't know if WEC will join them in November -- technically, it's a different season for WEC.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

St. Pete race will continue with no fans.
Long Beach cancelled.

Wow, I didn't hear about Long Beach.

I heard St. Pete is going to have a condensed schedule. I'm still thinking it might end up getting cancelled.

I'm so desparate for any sports watching, never mind racing, I might end up watching the NASCAR race. I heard Atlanta is running without spectators.

Yeah, LB mayor cancelled all events where more than 250 people will gather.

It will be creepy to watch races with no spectators. Like a twilight zone episode. Yes

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

If you haven't watched " Drive to survive" on Netflix, you should. it's great.

I would be surprised if they get anything going before Spain.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

Trans Am West season opener at Sonoma cancelled.

I was hoping to at least watch some of these niche series streaming online.

How long does withdrawel symptoms end...?

I have. We finished season 2 just in time for this year's season opener. And then ... welp.

I agree. Zandvoort at the earliest. Monaco at the lastest. Otherwise, goodbye season.

I'm wondering if Haas will be around. They need a signature sponsor.

They will be around this year. Gene is perfectly equipped to fund that team, and he's not the sort of guy to bail in the middle of the season.

Now, after the season, that's a whole different story, if he truly loses interest. But, I don't see the team going away. Someone will buy them. There are various rich people who have talked about wanting to get into F1. (Of course, if the economy tanks, that changes everything, but also for everyone.)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2018- with less winglets.

According to the-race.com (a new excellent website started by disgruntled former Autosport journalists), the season probably won't start till Baku. Yikes. That's after Monaco. Of course, F1 denies this.

Bahrain looks like a definite cancellation.
