Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I still think Rossi has talent and can compete in F1. He's not going to win a WDC or anything, but he could be a solid driver that could compete for GP wins in a decent car. But like you said it's all about money, if he can gather the funds then I think he gets into the Caterham car in another year or two. Otherwise he becomes a "lifer" in the GP2 and then here comes DTM!

Or returns Stateside for IndyCar.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I read that Michael Andretti is looking into giving Montoya a ride next season in Indycar. Now if that was to happen I think I would start watching Indycar regularly again. He is the kind of driver that the series needs. Of course his presence, if he drives in Indycar, would not help the numerous other wrongs in the series but he would make it more entertaining at least for a little while.

Is he gonna fit in the cockpit?!

I dislike the new SPEED site, but what are you going to do?

I'd love to see a way to get the new Formula E cars entered in the Indy 500.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Vettel is the new Schumacher, or Red Bull is Ferrari w/Braun. It's boring when this happens in F1 where one driver/team combo is virtually unstoppable.

and it's particularly frustrating when you feel as I do that Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton are just as good if not better drivers than that little **** but have inferior cars

I agree. It wasn't the best race as far as excitement goes. And I just would love to see Vettel in a car that wasn't designed by Newey. Oh well.

What are the stewards thinking in giving Maldonado a drive thru penalty when he ended di Resta's race for the bone headed move? Come on, he should be given at least a grid penalty in the next race or better yet have him sit for a race. A drive though was almost like no penalty at all while di Resta's day was done.

And congrats to Grojean for completing a lap in the race! :)

And a nice drive by Button.

Alonso with another stellar race. He's the man. Even though he is my favorite current driver, I am thinking that if a suitable replacement is found, then Massa needs to go. It pains me to say it, but Alonso is taking a top 10 car and fighting for podiums, Massa is taking a top 10 car and fighting for 8-9 place. The problem is who to replace him with. I can't see Kimi and Alonso getting along, and of the young drivers I don't think any of them would be an improvement at this time. I have to wonder of Ferrari wouldn't be wise to make an offer for Button as McLaren has not picked up the option for him on next season. I would also consider of replacing him with Heikki as I think he would provide a new perspective. Just think out loud here....

I agree 100%, but that's the way sports go sometimes. I'd rather have F1 like it is than a spec series like Indycar. I like the creativity side of motorsports.

A lot of whining about the Dixon penalty, but if one listens to the Barfield interveiw, he makes it clear that Dixon encroached into Power's pit box. Barfield also notes that the pit boxes are not repainted for Indycars, so it's hard to tell for the general public. I think the tyre dude walked the path he did because he felt like Dixon would easily navigate around him like always. It was't like he walk 5 feet away from the car, he was about a foot away from the guy who was at the back of the car.

Penske ripping Marco was awesome. I'm just shocked Marco didn't punch him.

The race itself was an amateur display of racing for many drivers.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Not the best weekend for watching...

The F1- it seemed as if Red Bull gambled that the race would be run dry, and they won that bet. Pretty handily. Behind them, Mercedes gambled more the other way, and it didn't cost them too much, but Lewis should have been able to win. Oh, well.

Didn't see the Indycar race, but saw the pit action. To Penske and Ganassi- you guys are supposed to be the top teams- both of you could be a tad more professional. Kind of hard to avoid the circius label when you all do that kind of stuff. Not to blame either one of your teams, but both of them. You wonder why the rest of the pack is so amateurish?

whoa! what did the captain say about Marco/to Marco???

as for the amateur driving you nailed it. This weekend was a complete regression by many drivers and that's tough to see after watching them at Pocono or Texas where they were very good

He would have been 66 today. RIP James

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I think I've mentioned before about why I don't like the side by side starts in Indycar, especially on street courses, let alone really tight ones. Yea, Baltimore is a very good example of that, IMHO.

When a series like this need solid professionalism to mean something, we get a lot of this? This is comedy hour. Again.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Sebastien Bourdais is just a joke of a driver now. It's difficult to imagine this guy won 4 titles. I hope he gets penalized heavily for his spinning of Justin Wilson because this is a repeat of many incidents Bourdais has caused this year

Of all the bonehead moves in this race, this is the one you focus on?

Power ran over his hose pitting badly, and then ran Dixon into the wall was pretty amateur hour.

Pretty much the entire field made indycar look bad.

well to be fair Power screwed up "felt bad" but would not admit he screwed up in not looking in his mirror. so yeah, he should be penalized heavily as well as that's also not the first time he's run into someone.

these drivers are complaining the double-file re-starts are causing the havoc and I call bs on that. they managed Brasil well, so what's the difference? they're just not using their heads.

kudos to Simona, Simon and Josef they ran great and CLEAN races today.

Bourdais, Rahal, Power, and about 3 others should get 10-minute misconducts for boarding

While one race may have been ok, it's not as if there have been many races not on ovals where it worked really well. Particularly street courses. IIRC, I complained about it last year, too. It's worth it.

I'd rather them take time to pass than take advantage of being next to someone, and then mayhem ensues.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

And on top of all of this is the late race restarts were a total joke, there was no double file at all. I like the double file restarts. The series needs to make sure the courses are designed to give enough room to maneuver. That turn 1 spot is just too tight. Street courses in general need to get **** canned, but I understand they are the best attended.

Better yet, restarts should be standing starts.

I'm not sure how Power knew how far inside of him Dixon was from a depth perception point of view, his rear tyre was kinda lined up with Dixon's front wing, and at the same time he's thinking about passing the guy in front of him. I'd say that's just tight racing. Dixon wouldn't have been able to turn his car around the corner was far inside as he was and he not got clipped. It's funny that Dixon and Franchitti both think Power is doing these things on purpose to them.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

The F1 New Jersey race is dead, no surprise there.

Indy tested on the roadcourse @ Indy. I've always thought it would be a great idea to race on the roadcourse @ Indy the same weekend as the 500, maybe in Friday night. Then Saturday could be "Carb" day, then Sunday the race. That would be a fan friendly arrangement for the whole weekend. The ticket to the 500 gets you into the roadcourse race, otherwise sell admittance for $5.00 just to get people in the door. There are some logistical issues, but if you have Saturday as an open test all day to the evening the teams could get the cars straightened out and ready for the oval.

Ricardo to RB. A safe call for them, he surely won't pose an immediate threat to Vettel, their favorite.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Man, the race at Monza sure seems to go fast! Still takes about an hour and a half, but it sure seems to go by in a big hurry.

Not the most exciting race, with a little bit of drama from Red Bull- still able to take 1st and 3rd.

Too bad Kimi and Lewis had to go onto a two stopper, as they may have made the top spots more interesting- not to say they would win, but they were sure fast at the end of the race.

Lots and lots of boos for Vettel. He's bothered by it, but he never really does anything about it- still acts like a punk on the track.

Sure wish we were there. Going to go back someday.
