Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I agree about Massa. He never seemed to recover from the 2009 Hungry spring accident. Just for fun I looked it up and of the three drivers that Massa drove with at Ferrari he finished on average 1.8 positions behind Schumi, 0.47 ahead of Kimi, and 3.5 behind Alonso. So he has certainly gone downhill.

Awesome analysis.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Kimi is a big psychological risk for the team, I would rather have had Hulkenburg, who has a brighter, longer future. The Kimi choice to me seems like a win next year desperation move rather than taking the time to develop Hulkenberg.

Good point.

So JPM would rather drive taxi cab for a mid-pack (at best) team than to drive for Andretti. I guess that goes to show how little Indycar drivers make compared to NASCAR drivers.

And Baltimore GP is now gone. I have to say I am very surprised by this. While I don't think it is the best race, it certainly was well attended. But, hey, at least the Indycar season will be over by Labor Day!

Baltimore ran into date conflicts in 2014 and 2015. In 14 it will be a college football game and there will be a convention in 2015.

I understand the labor day weekend conflicts but I was surprised that another date couldn't be found that would work for both Baltimore and Indycar. I think a big part of it is that stupid desire by Indycar to end the season by labor day.

Yep.

You can thank Tony George for that...

I wonder how much of this was merely an excuse for the promotors and/or city to gracefully exit the venture to save face.

After posting this, I went to a racing news site, and read the following, which seems to confirm just what I wrote.

Like we said, when in doubt, follow the money. Andretti Sports Management managing director Kevin Healy was confident that a new date, prior to Labor Day weekend would be secured for the Baltimore Grand Prix when he spoke to RACER on Sept. 6 something appeared to have changed between the city and event owner prior to the weekend.

That something appears to have been the lack of a title sponsor.

"Right now, without a sponsor, it would be hard to confirm a date for 2015," Kevin Harris, spokesperson for the Baltimore mayoral office confirmed.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Wow, I am surprised! Although you are correct that it is a better team. :)

Me, too.

Or, let me rephrase that. Penske stealing a driver out from under another owner? No surprise there.

Montoya signing with Penske when no one saw that one coming? Surprise.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Holy Crap! Got blind-sided by that one. Welcome to the Penske family. At this point I'd say Andrtetti/Penske/Ganassi are pretty even.

Massa is in negotiations with Lotus?! Got blind-sided by that one as well. Massa also said he'll be charging now and not holding back supporting Alonso. I dare you to finish ahead of Alonso. I doubt Ferrari told you to not stay on Alonso's gearbox to maximize the team points. Sounds the like amicable divorce is going to get ugly.

Oh, and Massa is also talking with McLaren- http://www.gptours.com/index.php?co..._02ab9a107b-fd06858e81-130152002#.UjdIxcZJO4g

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

So Vettel runs one hot lap right at the start of Q3 then pulls into the garage. And Vettel wonders why people "boo" him on the podium. I think that the arrogance of moves like this (even if it was the team's call) is partially to blame.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Ugh, Vettel is making this race a farce as far as any type of competition for first.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Alonso is the THE man with that great start and ending up second. He may be the best standing start guy of the last 30 years. I have no doubts if the Ferrari was just a few 10ths off of Vettel Alonso could beat in.
