Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I see your point, but don't agree that it's a sham. To me, just as it's aways been- qualfiying is- who is the bravest, and best driver on the very ragged edge? Trim the car to go 4 laps the fastest you can. The race is about survival. I really doubt that "race" engines would be pusing 230- more like take off a mph or two. Those things were trimmed out to peak for 4 laps. Although, that's relative, of course- it's not as if they are qualfiying grenades. But being that Honda and Chevy have enough invested in them- it's an engine change to make sure they don't blow engines during the 500.

To me it's like Pirelli having 1 compound for qualifying, then for the race giving them an entyrely (cute use of the y, eh?) different compound. What qualifying means to me is the guy who was the fastest should have the best odds of winning. If someone wins from 17th spot, oh will the glory be heaped upon that driver, when in reality his hopped up race engine was a lot better than this crappy qualy engine.

I think someome could have hit 230. How much more hp is needed get that mere 3 mph overall faster, not that much as trimmed out as the cars are.

I hate the fact that they are running flat too. No lifting means they are a passenger and not a driver.

That's an interesting way to look at it- so were you upset that the Buick stock blocks were so much faster in qualifying than the Cosworth or Illmor cars back in the day? I don't think anyone realistically thought they would ever win...

But back in the F1 glory days, they had massive grenade motors for qualifying that didn't run during the race.

Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to this weekend- Monaco and Indy! Great racing.

Back in the "old" days, teams completely rebuilt the engines between qualifying and the race. Heck, they rebuilt the entire car.

Interesting qualifying in Monaco- a spit of rain- not enough for rain times, but enough to really mess up the track... I'll not comment on individuals.

Quite the twist of the race in Monaco. How many times do you see a red flag on a day where the weather is that nice?

i don't get nbc sports network so I'm semi watching via twitter, but like never.
Also noticed that Williams is going over to Mercedes engines for next year and dropping Renault.

It was on most NBC regular stations and online. Nice win for Mercedes and Rosberg.

That was fun 500!

And congrats to TK! A lot of those guys could have won it.

Dang. well serves me right to read the NBC press release, and actually believe it.

At least you have good humor about it- I posted a similar suggestion on a different car forum, and was very "yelled" at by another poster. They were complaining about NBC running it's coverage long and odd- even though that was totally due to the race being red-flagged. Their precious DVR's didnt' get the finish.

Oh, well.

I thought I also saw that the British GP was going to be on NBC as well, and I'm pretty confident that the race from Texas will be on NBC as well.

Lot's of back and forth of the Pirrelli 1000km tests on the Mercedes. not sure where this one is going to go- apparently Mercedes sent an e-mail pointing out that the testing is very open ended. Back in 2012.
