Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!
To me it's like Pirelli having 1 compound for qualifying, then for the race giving them an entyrely (cute use of the y, eh?) different compound. What qualifying means to me is the guy who was the fastest should have the best odds of winning. If someone wins from 17th spot, oh will the glory be heaped upon that driver, when in reality his hopped up race engine was a lot better than this crappy qualy engine.
I think someome could have hit 230. How much more hp is needed get that mere 3 mph overall faster, not that much as trimmed out as the cars are.
I hate the fact that they are running flat too. No lifting means they are a passenger and not a driver.
I see your point, but don't agree that it's a sham. To me, just as it's aways been- qualfiying is- who is the bravest, and best driver on the very ragged edge? Trim the car to go 4 laps the fastest you can. The race is about survival. I really doubt that "race" engines would be pusing 230- more like take off a mph or two. Those things were trimmed out to peak for 4 laps. Although, that's relative, of course- it's not as if they are qualfiying grenades. But being that Honda and Chevy have enough invested in them- it's an engine change to make sure they don't blow engines during the 500.
