Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I am OK with a new thread for non-Nascar and non-open wheel racing if you want to start one.

I was asking more from the point of view of whether you would like to get it out of the open wheel thread. Although I follow what's happening with open wheel racing, I have a particular interest in sports car racing—but I have no problem with handling the rare discussion of it here instead of in a separate thread.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Vodaphone announced yesterday they are pulling 50 million euro's in sponsorship money from McLeran after this season.

Or it can be seen that the sponroship contract ends at the finish of the 2013 season, and they don't want to renew it. Speculation is that Sergio Perez's backers will be the lead sponsors for the next few years. They've got seriously deep pockets.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

For the Senna fans- Bruno is driving this weekend for Aston Martin at Sebring.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

And tomorrow they will announce Telmex as a sponsor.
Vodophone is pulling sponsorship from a number of big time sports, not just F1. Several organizations said they would have no problems replacing them, according to the London papers anyway. Still, it's a lot of money.

I didn't know that. I just figure, like the Press does, that Perez is going to bring Telmex $$$ with him to McLaren.

I see they finally got all of qualifying in. Hamilton shows his prowess and maybe foresight to leave McLaren. Massa out qualifying Alonso. And of course RB looking very stout. Ready for the race tomorrow (my time)!!

Well that was an interesting race. Maybe not the most exciting race on the track as far as passing, but the strategy certainly played a very important role. I never though until the last stint that Kimi had a shot. Love it that Vettel didn't win. Good day for Ferrari. Absolutely loved it that Sutil had a good day. I know its early but does Hamilton look smart today for moving to Mercedes or what? Can Webber be more asleep at the start? Ugh, I feel bad for him.

Not reading your thread Matt. I swear I'm not going to read it. At least for 2 more hours...

But, watching the replay of the F1 race, and NCAAH comes up on the ticker. I think I like NBCSp.

I thought it was a great start to the season. Most importantly, no safety car. Some good competitive racing with 7 different race leaders. Sutil and Alonso being one of them. Congratulations to Kimi for winning the race and to Felipe for finishing 4th, really pleased for him. I was somewhat surprised that Sutil's soft tires deteriorated so rapidly (as were the announcers). Nice job by NBC Sports.

It was a good race. I will disagree about the passing- there was some pretty good ones out there- when Hamilton started going off, the fight was interesting to watch- as well as Sutil trying to stay in contention. Good clean fights.

Too soon to say about Lewis, but for sure Mercedes is faster at this point than prior years. Just like Ferrari.

Kimi shows that Lotus is fast, but Grosean does the opposite. If the difference stays this much, will Romain stay for the season?

McLaren- wow- Jensen wins a year ago, and is the first to pit on bad tires this year. For a guy who is light on tires, this does not bode well- and does help the Lewis argument right now. It's going to take a little getting used to seeing a yellow helmet in a McLaren and not be Hamilton...

great race. Kimi wins, Ferrari shows strong, Sutil was racy, effing overrated Vettel does NOT win and Mercedes looks much improved.

now if Webber can keep his head and make better starts this will be a very entertaining season to say the least

I am still not quite sure how Grojean kept his seat after last season. He can be very fast but he is also very inconsistant. Maybe he has $$ and is partially or fully buying his ride? If Kimi keeps on form and Grojean doesn't improve I can't see him staying around for the whole season unless he's buying his ride. Especially with good experienced drivers like Heikki sitting on the sidelines.

I was surprised about the McLaren's use of tires. Like you said if Button can't keep the tires from wearing than that car needs some major work.

Malaysia and St. Petersburg this weekend. Going to be a busy one!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Read this morning that there are rumors (how realiable is very much in question) that McLaren is considering upgrading last years MP4-27 car to make it legal for this year specs and running it. That is how poorly this year car is.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I love the fact that the off strategy paid off for once. Usually the 1 stop less drivers can't stretch the tyres long enough. I thought it was a very entertaining race. NBC is a very good job as well, the only mistake I saw was in the final race standings I think they had Grojean listed driving a Ferarri.

I HATE the podium interviews by an ex-driver.

Varsha is back next week as well, Duffy does a fine job, but to me Varsha's voice IS F1.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

American Endurance Racing would be better if it was North American Endurance Racing- they do run in Canada and Mexico. But that would have been good. NAER... that's not a word, right?

The two series currently run one race outside the U.S. and that's ALMS at Mosport.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Grand Am ran in Mexico City a few times. NAER works well.

What part of the word "currently" don't you understand? :-) (Though I must admit I forgot about Mexico City.)

They also ran in Montreal, but not currently...

But seriously, using North America in the name certainly would have been a smart thing to do. Heck, anything would have been smarter than the name they chose.
