Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

But seriously, using North America in the name certainly would have been a smart thing to do. Heck, anything would have been smarter than the name they chose.

See look at this. A few of us on a hockey message board can come up with a better name than NASCAR can! We should go into consulting. :D

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

He would have been 53 today.

Happy Birthday Ayrton Senna. R.I.P. You are greatly missed.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

RB, Ferrari, and lotus looking stout in both FP1 and FP2. McLaren looking very poorly. I wonder if it will stay that way in Qualifying and during the race.....

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

if there was any doubt about Vettel being the biggest arrogant ***** in F1 I think he erased that doubt last night.

Webber was maintaining a lead and pulling gaps and Vettel was asking his team to instruct Webber to move over...uhm, what?

then Vettel disobeys pre-race team orders not to pass (see the article on F1.com)

please, anyone but Vettel this year, ANYONE

also, Mercedes looked strong again. not sure if they can pull up enough to compete w/Red Bull but they're certainly close to Ferrari

and speaking of...Alonso made the dumbest move of the race not pitting immediately after his wing broke

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I caught the last 2/3 of the Indycar race, man that was fantastic

a great broadcasting team for a change? wow!

Simona drove a hell of a race as did Kanaan. Also it appears Marco Andretti is finally beginning to live up to expectations, a great gritty drive from him today.

James Hinchliffe is a great young driver and I hope wins many more

Helio also proved that he's still got it.

*** is up with J.R. Hildebrand he had 2 or 3 moments where he was what? texting while driving? I mean passing 2 cars under yellow, then running into and over Will Power? that's pretty inexcusable stuff there and should be met with a big penalty. it's not professional in the slightest

F1 - did anyone else think it was hilarious when Hamilton stopped into the McLaren pits on his first stop:)

Asking is one thing. To actually take matters into your own hands is another.

I wonder if Red Bull has the balls to punish their driver, and not give Vettel the best bits for the next race, treating Webber as a true number one in China.

and speaking of...Alonso made the dumbest move of the race not pitting immediately after his wing broke

Fernando is human after all...

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

THanks to the CCHA final, I only saw bits and pieces of the race replay.

And thanks to NBC telling us the end during the Indycar race, I already knew how it finished.

But didn't know all the fireworks.

Nice to see Mercedes doing well with both cars, and interesting to see Hamilton's reaction. Some of this human side was missing at the end of the McLaren stint.

Oh, and the F1 after race show did have a replay of Weber being mad at Vettel in a room with Newey. Adrian looked as if someone passed some serious gas. I do hope this dosen't turn into nascar.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

This conflict between teams wanting manufacturing points and drivers wanting titles is ruining F1, in my opinion. Drivers should be allowed to race. I think fans want to see racing based on driver skill and not just get in line to finish a race. I recognize it's all about the money, but teams giving orders to drivers really spoils it for me.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

You're at least half a century late with the complaint.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I don't particularly like team orders either, but they are just a part of F1 and I accept and understand why they are there. For this past weekend I can understand why Mercedes did what they did and I respect Hamilton for the way he acted after the race.

If it was pretty much anyone but RB I would question the whole treatment of Webber, but they have made it perfectly clear the Vettel is their undisputed #1 and are going to back him without question. I am more surprised that they told Vettel to hold position than by what he did. I understand Webber being mad but that is what he signed up for.

Haven't watched all of the Indycar race yet. I hopefully will finish watching tonight.

Hamilton and Rosberg are friends. I don't think Hamilton had any feelings towards Button. So, it doesn't surprise me that Hamilton acted the way he did towards Rosberg after the race. And I'm sure Rosberg understood it had nothing to do with Hamilton. Nico knew it was the team dictating the outcome.

:-) Exactly.

I "love" how people get all uppity over team orders as if it's a new thing.

Now, if people want to b*tch about team orders ruining F1 for the past 50 years, go have at it. :-)

The real issue in this particular case is how a driver ignored his boss' order. If any of us did that in the real world, we'd be fired. In fact, John Watson wrote that would happen to a driver, too. He would be fired for ignoring team orders (can you say Paul Tracy with Team Penske...?). Watson wrote that Red Bull should suspend Vettel for one race, because that's the only way he will ever learn he has to listen to his boss, a boss who obviously has been shown to be unable to control the team, and thus unable to do his job.

Funny, during lunch I told my wife if Red Bull had any real balls, they would suspend Vettel for one race. Glad to see I think like a former F1 driver... :-)

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

I read today it was the team's call to leave Alonso out there....still a dumb move. Some points is better than no points.

I'm hoping Simona has a heck of a great year, just to prove Danica was over rated.

I'm wondering whether the team said this to deflect blame off of Alonso.

According to Buxton, Ferrari had everything laid out for a pit stop. Maybe they did tell Alonso at the last minute to stay out.

If Alonso did make the call and the team is willing to protect him, I'm okay with that. I just don't know if we will truly know.

I think Simona did just that by her qualifying and race in St. Pete. She can definitely race with the big boys. I think she'll get a few podiums this year and *may* even challenge for a win along the way

oh yeah, and then the Go Daddy car wins the race which didn't happen previously:) Danica? who?

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

Uh, enough of the Danica thing.

You guys are making a perfect example of why she's constantly brought up. Face it, she's a perfect media character- so how about we just move on.

FWIW, she did finish second at a road course.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2013...year of the driver swap!

If Vettel get punished publicly I'll be extremely surprised.

He will probably get his hand slapped and it will be handled internally. I saw my first F1 race in 1966 at the Nurburgring and have been following it ever since. While team orders were in affect in the 60's it was not nearly as blatant as it is now. Radio communication has brought it to a new level. I completely understand the logic, but I still don't like it.
