Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Another line- can Alonso move high into the points or not.

I'll predict he'll get passed by Kimi.

Still, what happens if it rains? That will be fascinating.

How good is the Mercedes in the wet?

Fantastic race. The weather becoming involved made it one of the most exciting and unpredictable in terms of strategy. Congratulations to Sergio Perez for a podium finish in 2nd place. Great win for Fernando! Could be interesting to see what happens to Felipe in the next few races. He competed in wheel to wheel battles but couldn't win them.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

that was a hell of a fun race to watch. too bad Schumi was taken out so early, he was never a factor after that.

great job by Bruno Senna to charge up to 6th!

I'm happy for Alonso, but man what could have been for Perez if he hadn't have screwed up toward the end

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Indy car race is ok, lots of teething problems, to be expected.

Tight course means not to agressive attempts to get positons- the best passing is coming on the restarts.

Congrats to Helio- nice win.

Not sure what happened at the end with Hildebrant, ha was closing fast on the 5-6 places, and all of a sudden he was listed as out. No explanation.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

good race in St. Pete. I thought Power had the field covered and then the yellows threw everything up in the air.

Lotus has a LOT of work to do unsurprisingly, however Honda and Chevy seemed to be clear of problems (save Kanaan).

I'm really looking forward to how this year plays out, I bet we get 2 or possibly as many as 4 first time winners!

Barricello
Hildebrand
Hinchliffe

are my immediate choices but also at points Newgarden and Pagenaud looked good as well as Sato

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

F1:

Alonso showed why is arguably the best driver in F1 right now. To take that car to even lead the race is great and then to win is amazing. Perez's drive was excellent also. Very good showing by him. A nice recovery by Kimi and it was good to see Senna up there also.

Massa is done. I thought he would have until the summer break to show he can still drive but after yesterday I would be surprised if he drives for Ferrari in China in three weeks. He has simply never recovered his form after the Hungry accident. :(

Indycar: A good race and I was entertained. It was great to see some of the "lesser" teams have drivers with good runs. I enjoyed Helio getting a win after his pathetic season last year.

It has become apparent to me that the more things change the more they stay the same. Penske and Ganassi teams will dominate. Andretti and KV will each sneak a win or two out but not even close to the Championship. I don't think the new cars/engines will be the great equalizer that Indycar and the media thought it would be. Those two team simply have so many resources to put into learning the car that the smaller teams aren't going to be able to regularly compete for wins.

The Lotus teams are in more trouble than I thought. I am wondering how much HP they are giving up to the Chevy and Honda engines.

Those rear fenders or whatever they call those things behind the rear wheels have got to go on road/street courses. They make the cars look horrible and more like a DP car than an open wheel car. And while the cars look better with livery on them they are still pretty ugly same as the F1 cars and their stepped noses.

Oh and maybe it is just me, but the Wheldon stuff was a bit too much.

F1.....very entertaining even if the red flag ruined my dvr plan and I only got to see the first half of the race. Alonso is amazing and Massa is totally cooked, he's just lost it entirely. In the end it will still be a Red Bull/McLaren battle.

Indy.....Coverage was bad as usual, but the engines blowing up left and right never happened, the driving was clean, the cars looked good to me. I agree too much Wheldon in the pre-race. That track just isn't good for these cars. The biggest question I had was how come Power just couldn't slice through the field when he got stuck in the pack? How can you be that quick, yet not be able to pass anyone? I thought we were going to see a standing start, maybe it's just on permanent road courses?

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I think Will Powers car, and probably all the Penske cars, have set-ups meant for being in the front and cleaner air and when Power was bogged down in the teen positions he did not have the set-up to deal with the dirtier air.

I get that, but if you plan on pitting on lap 12, you're gonna get into traffic and are going to need to pass someone at some point. If you're doing a 2 stopper, it makes more sense. Last year Power had the same problem, he was great out front, but if he got mired in the pack, he could not claw his way to the front on these tight circuits.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

If you gave Penske and Ganassi formula fords to run they would win that most of the time too.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

this article nicely sums up what I've thought of Vettel for some time now, he's %%%%ing punk!

http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-sebastian-vettel-loses-cool-as-red-bull-loses-edge

He was also ordered to retire the car (via radio and pitboard) due to high brake temps and he totally ignored the order. Apparently RB was also going to install a new gearbox in the car with the car out of the race.

Indy...I thought race control did a good job, though the first yellow was waaay too long.

Penske/Ganassi.....they could race at the local dirt track and win most of the races.

it's interesting. Horn says they're going sit Vettel down later this week for a chat. I wonder if this in any slight way might improve chances for Weber on that team?

after 2 races I'm just as excited now for the F1 season as I am Indycar! I guess I was apprehensive about another RB dominance but that clearly isn't happening and it appears if anything there may more surprise podium finishes by underfunded teams (possibly lotus, possibly williams w/any luck?) if things progress as they are thusfar

At this very early point I'd say it's McLaren's championship to lose. RB is clearly the 2nd best team, then Lotus/Mercedes/Sauber duking it out for 3rd/4th/5th. I am a huge Ferarri fan, but they are doomed. In F1, if you get to the party with a dog, there's zero chance you'll be able to dump the dog for a hot chic.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

Indycar is looking to add push to pass. I vote for no. I really dislike contrived passing. Real race fans understand that the cars line up in order of fastest to slowest, so anyone who expects to see gobs of passes doesn't understand what racing is all about. They already have 2 different tyre options and they have re-fueling, that's enough to shake up the order. I think the difficultly of passing has a lot to do with the cars being under-powered and over-downforced. I suspect these cars are still too easy to drive.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

I currently have 0 opinion of push to pass. I guess if I had too weigh in I'd say add horsepower and lower downforce and let the chips fall where they may. the more I see videos of the 1995 CART season the more I see there was NO PROBLEM with the racing at all.

Hanford device in the late 90's DID help passing on superspeedways and maybe that would be necessary again down the road. I do recall going to michigan w/and w/out the handford and man those pre-hanford races sucked. parker johnstone opening about about a 3-5 second lead then engine blown, Mario taking over w/a 5-second lead or more then he's out. and the entire field strung out w/little or no passing.

BARBER: wow. Castroneves doesn't surprise me as much as James Hinchliffe, Mike Conway and J.R. Hildebrand in the TOP 5! yes! Rubens in 14th. that is a surprise in a bad way, not sure if he's still feeling out the car or what but I thought he'd match Kanaan on most tracks to be honest.

Re: Open Wheel Racing 2012: The year of the ugly cars!

also - it's just 2 races but James Hinchliffe is making Danica Patrick look like a joke.
