On The Run: Where's Waldo in NY

Re: On The Run: Where's Waldo in NY

West compared to what?

Of course, you have to find it first.

West compared to Dannemora.

I used to travel to Massena over summers, would go through Plattsburgh and the Military Turnpike instead of Paul Smiths, like I would do with Potsdam. Even the distance between Malone and Rouses Point can be deceiving.

Wait. You used to come to my hometown? No wonder it has all gone downhill.

My biggest complaint with military turnpike is that it can be difficult to pass (not a large amount of passing zones/fair amount of traffic at times). But going through the mountains can be difficult in the winter, and tourist season in the summer/fall.

They need to develop/construct the rooftop highway (I-98 or whatever they want to call it.)

Ah yes, I-98. I've read some stuff about that. I can understand the concept, but aside from bypassing villages along the way, I'm not sure what more you would get out of not just expanding parts of US 11 and/or NY 12/37/182 (I think? whatever the shortcut is through Constable)/190 to four lane as able. Are they just looking for federal funding on the state road portions?

I haven't been on the MT since 2007 and it was usually only in the summer, so my memory's a little fuzzy about the passing lanes (I would only take it between Plattsburgh-374 and Ellenburg).

Well, I'm sure federal funding is a very big positive of it. It would be quite difficult to expand 11/37/122 (constable shortcut you're thinking of), 11B, etc simply because all the villages/towns they go through.

It may not be a VITAL addition to infrastructure in NNY, but it would do much more good than bad. There isn't a very good way from Watertown to Plattsburgh currently. This would help that a great deal, and would hopefully entice more development along the northern border.

True; there are three decent ways from what I can tell: NY 3 (and 3A), US 11 (with NY 11B if you so desire)/NY 190, and NY 12/NY 37/NY 122/US 11/NY 190. The APA would never allow expanding the first one. I guess it comes down to what villages you want to service along the way (even if it means upgrading state roads from the highway), and how far north the Adirondacks (not the park, but the physical mountains) stretch and what you can get away with; obviously Beartown is along 190, you have park around St. Regis Falls if you go too far south towards 11B, is it more important to service Ogdensburg/Massena or Canton/Potsdam, perhaps Akwesasne will have a say...

The Seaway is more important. If you can goods rapidly from the ports along the St. Lawrence, then you save $$. If you want to get from the Interstate to the colleges, then take the exit.

EDIT: Guess I was wrong - run it right along Rt 11. http://www.upstatenyroads.com/i98.shtml

I wonder, though, how much ticket revenue will take a hit along Rt 11?? It was a famous speed trap back in the day (along with Tupper Lake).

That site only says US 11 because they want to give people an idea of the area where it would be. I sincerely doubt it will be directly along US 11.

Re: On The Run: Where's Waldo in NY

The rebuttal there is that at least, if the escapees are indeed armed (no proof they are or aren't, although LEO's are proceeding as if they are), then they have the same issue.
Because these convicted murderers are going to follow the law when it comes to which gun they can use? Hmmm

Re: On The Run: Where's Waldo in NY

DNA found in a camp near Malone. Either they're headed for the Reservation or Potsdam.

...or they're going to swim the St. Lawrence and try to get into Canada. If they wanted land, they would have found something in Chateauguay.

Re: On The Run: Where's Waldo in NY

Yep. Draconian was the correct word.

Also, it is pretty comical to think that people in the area where this is going down just turned in their weapons/mags/etc. Doh kay.

Actually, most of the sheriff's departments won't even enforce it. The only ones that will are Albany County, Tompkins County (where Ithaca and Cornell are), Westchester County, and the seven counties in NYC-LI.
