Ohio State Women's Hockey 2025-26

I honestly didn't know if Dunn was American or Canadian LOL.
The Dunne's are from O'Fallon, MO (St. Louis area). We will be without Joy Dunne (USA), Mira Jungaker (Sweden), Jenna Raunio (Sweden), Hilda Svensson (Sweden), and Sanni Vanhanen (Finland). When you recruit well, as your program does, too, it's to be expected. Hopefully, we still have enough firepower and D to win some games next month. It would be nice if the NCAA could just take a break like the professionals do (PWHL and NHL), but that's probably never going to happen. Several WCHA teams will be without key players next month so we will find out how deep our teams are. We will still have some girls who can score goals, and as much as it has been tough without Emma Peschel, it was probably a blessing in disguise as she had a legit shot at making Team USA's roster before she got hurt. Hopefully we get her back soon.

Onto today's game ... the Buckeyes completed a sweep on the road at St. Cloud, winning today's game by a final score of 5-1. St. Cloud struck first on a goal from Sofianna Sundelin to make it 1-0. Ohio State was not able to answer in the initial frame, so the teams went into the first intermission with the Huskies leading 1-0. The final periods were all Ohio State as the Bucks scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the final intermission. The Ohio State goals were scored by Mira Jungaker, Kaia Malachino, and Maxine Cimoroni. Sloane Matthews scored for Ohio State in the third period to give the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead. Joy Dunne would add an empty-netter to make the final score 5-1. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 49-23 in this one. Nice to see Genny Klein get the start in net for Ohio State. Genny had a solid game, stopping 22 of the 23 shots she faced in the win. JoJo Chobak got the start in net for St. Cloud and stopped 44 of the 48 shots she faced. Ohio State will be on the road again next weekend, traveling to Mankato to take on Minnesota State. St. Cloud will travel to Duluth to take on Minnesota-Duluth.

Any info on why Swiderski and Raunio were out this weekend?

Any info on why Swiderski and Raunio were out this weekend?
No clue. I honestly am not sure what is going on with Jenna or Sara. Grace McCoshen was missing in tonight's game, as was our normal starting goaltender, Hailey MacLeod. We did have Emma Peschel back, so that was good, but it would sure be nice to have enough D's that we didn't have to move our best player over to D. Funny thing, the Minnesota State announcer kept commenting on how amazing it was for a D to have 20+ goals. All I could think was "Tell me you don't follow women's hockey without telling me you don't follow women's hockey." Most people are well aware that Joy Dunne has been a forward for her entire career at Ohio State except for the last couple weekends. She did score four goals tonight, so I guess it's not a bad thing. I did read that Joy did play some D growing up, so the position is not completely foreign to her.

That is a good segue to tonight's game. It was not always pretty, but the Buckeyes took game one in Mankato by a final score of 7-4. Jordyn Petrie opened the scoring to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead over the host Mavericks. Mercury Bischoff scored for Minnesota State to tie it at 1. Jocelyn Amos scored the next two goals for the Buckeyes to put them up 3-1. Ayla Puppe scored late in the first period for Minnesota State to send the two teams to the first intermission with Ohio State clinging to a 3-2 lead. Mercury Bischoff would get her second goal of the game early in the second period to tie things up at 3. Joy Dunne would score the next two goals to put Ohio State up 5-3 heading into the final intermission. Joy would then open the scoring in the third period to put Ohio State up 6-3 and give her a natural hat trick. Minnesota State's Sophie Stramel would get a goal for the Mavericks to get them within two at 6-4. Joy Dunne would add another to give Ohio State a 7-4 lead and that is how it ended. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks in this one 36-15. Genny Klein got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped 11 of the 15 shots she faced. Hailey Hansen got the call in net for Minnesota State and stopped 29 of the 36 shots she faced. The two teams are back at it tomorrow with game time at 4:00 pm EST.

Ohio State completed the sweep against Minnesota State earlier today by a final score of 4-1. Kassidy Carmichael opened the scoring in the first period to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Emma Peschel and Hilda Svensson scored for Ohio State in the second frame to put the Bucks up 3-0. Taylor Otremba would get a goal for the Mavericks to cut the lead to 3-1. Joy Dunne would score her 5th goal of the weekend to give the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead heading into the final intermission. Neither team lit the lamp in the final period, so that is how it ended. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 35-17 in this one. Taylor Kressin got the start in net for the Buckeyes and stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced to get the win. Hailey Hansen stopped 31 of the 35 shots she faced for the Mavericks. Minnesota State will host Minnesota-Duluth next weekend. Ohio State will return home to host St. Thomas.

Ohio State took game one earlier tonight against St. Thomas by a final score of 2-1 in overtime. Neither team could find the back of the net in the initial frame. The Tommies drew first blood on a goal by Whitney Horton to take a 1-0 lead into the second intermission. The Buckeyes would tie it up in the third period on a Jocelyn Amos goal. Neither team scored again in regulation so extra time was needed. Jocelyn Amos scored for Ohio State to get her second goal of the game and the game-winner. The Buckeyes outshot the Tommies in this one, 47-10. Julia Minotti got the start in net for St. Thomas and almost stole this one for her team, stopping 45 of the 47 shots she faced. Taylor Kressin started in net for Ohio State and stopped 9 of the 10 shots she faced to get the win. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 1:00 pm EST.

At 5x5, the Tommies proved to be almost impenetrable. But when the 3x3 of overtime came, the visitors were over-matched by the home trio of Jocelyn Amos, Joy Dunne & Sloane Matthews. The line score on the GWG? Amos from Dunne & Matthews at 0:38 of the OT. Of course.

But for 60 long minutes of regulation time, the Buckeye offense was kept mostly to the outside. Yes, 47 shots got through. Many more were blocked. But the majority of those attempts came from medium and long range. And more than a few were launched after extended dangles through the high slot, as Buckeye shooters probed the defense in search of quality shots.

A Major Penalty/Game Misconduct on Mira Jungaker added some intrigue to the game.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Thomas Honorable Mention: Julia Minotti
Julia gave up one goal in regulation time & one goal in overtime. Both were from point blank range. Otherwise Minotti was rock solid, posting 45 Saves. Call her strong & steady. With one piece of puck luck in the 3rd Period, she could very well have had a 1-0 Shutout win.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: The Buckeye Penalty Kill
The Tommies were 0 for 1 on the PP. So what's the big deal? Well, for starters, it was a major penalty . Then, with the benefit of hindsight, we realize that an early PP goal for St. Thomas might have flipped the result. Instead, the Buckeye PK was magnificent. The Tommies didn't get a single shot on goal during the entire 5 minutes. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but it can't remember any decent scoring chances at all. Well done, killers.

#3 Star: Joy Dunne, Ohio State
The versatile Dunne constantly creates. Most often from the Right Wing position. But in this contest, she spent a good portion of the game on defense -- covering for the ejected Jungaker. Regardless of initial positioning, Joy had assists on both Buckeye tallies. To say nothing of her leading role on the PK.

#2 Star: Jenessa Gazdik, St. Thomas
The courageous Jenessa had Six Shot Blocks, which led all players. In slang language, you might say that's just plain sick. At a higher diction level, Gazdik's performance should be labeled effective & remarkable. Jenessa is a most worthy representative of the St. Thomas Defensive Corps.

#1 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
When you score both goals in a 2-1 Win, you're going to have the inside track for top honors. That certainly applies here.

At 7:58 of the 3rd Period, Amos won a slot battle, redirecting a Hilda Svensson shot into the net. On the GWG, Jocelyn won a crucial draw. After absorbing a bit of a pounding by the Tommie 'D,' she popped back up -- into scoring position in the slot. Sure enough, a clever pass from Joy Dunne arrived right on time. Left one-on-one with the goalie, Amos deked & scored.

Oh, about those draws. Overall Jocelyn won 20 face-offs on 24 attempts. That's a conversion rate of 83.3%. Stunning. And yet another reason why Jocelyn Amos is your Friday Difference-Maker.

Next Stargazing: The Ohio State/St. Thomas Rematch Saturday At 1:00 PM. That start time was set long ago. But fortuitously it should allow most of us to get home before the well-marketed snow storm starts in earnest. Come to the game, then stay safe & warm.

Minotti certainly filled the net and did an outstanding job.
I saw two problems with our attempts to score. We were not hitting the goalies weak spot which is the upper corners, you can't score hitting her torso. Second we were not getting in position to make a play with the rebounds and for the most part St.Thomas was certainly on their game in tying up our sticks when in close and taking away the shooting lanes.

Ohio State completed the sweep earlier today against St. Thomas. Today's game did not require extra time as the Buckeyes won this one 5-0. Jordyn Petrie opened the scoring and sent the Bucks into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. The Buckeyes got goals from Jocelyn Amos, Joy Dunne, and Maxine Cimoroni in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the final intermission. Sloane Matthews added a goal for Ohio State in the third frame to make the final score 5-0. Ohio State outshot the Tommies 36-10 in this one. Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod stopped all ten shots she faced to get the shutout win. Nora Hannan got the start in net for St. Thomas and stopped 31 of the 36 shots she faced. Ohio State will host Minnesota-Duluth next weekend. St. Thomas will return home and host St. Cloud.

Appreciate the comment & generally agree. I'd emphasize that St. Thomas was controlling their defensive slot, as you describe.

From a forward's perspective: When you're shooting under duress, you're programmed to "put the puck on net & good things will happen." For better or worse, that mentality often produces a medium paced shot right at the goalie. With the end result being easy saves and few rebounds. Again as you describe.

Control Restored On Saturday; Olympic Chaos Coming Soon
Did Ohio State Get Smart on Saturday Afternoon? Maybe. But however the nice start transpired, the Buckeyes seemed to find the early face-off time agreeable. OSU quickly took Control of the rematch, and never let go.

That said, international intrigue is coming. My understanding is that our five Olympians will be on the way to Italy prior to our next series. Stating the obvious, that will have a big impact on our line-up. Here's to hoping our remaining players can keep the ship going full steam ahead. But a bit of Chaos will likely go with the territory.

In normal times the Buckeye Olympians certainly make their presence felt. Saturday's game featured two highlight reel goals to lock down the win. Treating those tallies as a pair, all 5 Olympians factored into the scoring plays. I'll use the Top Two Stars to chronicle those contributions. For this post only, I'll use National Team designations to honor the 3 countries involved.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

St. Thomas Honorable Mention: (tie) JuliAnna Gazdik and Janessa Gazdik

#14 and # #28 certainly make for a fine defensive pairing. While I wouldn't want to push the comparison too hard, I'm reminded of the "Sisterly Synergy of the Schmidts" we enjoyed a decade ago here at Ohio State. The Gazdiks are each outstanding players in their own right. When paired together, the result exceeds the sum of the parts. They earn their ice time, that's for sure.

The Saturday scoresheet notes that JuliAnna & Janessa each had two Blocks. Not a Wow factor this time. But certainly a bright spot on a day St. Thomas didn't have a lot to cheer about.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie) Jordyn Petrie and Jocelyn Amos
Jordyn's early goal set the tone for the game. Collecting the puck near her own blue line, Petrie set off on a dynamic solo dash culminating in an unassisted goal. Playing with the lead proved to be much more pleasant than playing from behind was on Friday.

Early in the 2nd Period, Jocelyn added an unassisted tally of her own. No dash required this time. An odd St. Thomas turnover led directly to the goal. How odd was it? It looked like three separate Tommies had an opportunity to cancel out the turnover. But all seemed handcuffed by the turn of events. In contrast, Amos grabbed the puck in the slot, and with laser focus converted the opportunity.

Based on my usual emphasis on difference-makers, it can certainly be argued that Jordyn & Jocelyn should be higher on this list. But I went with the storyline this time...

#3 Star: Hailey MacLeod, Ohio State
Gotta love a shutout; gotta recognize a shutout. Ten saves? OK, not a Wow factor. But MacLeod passed every test. Also, on a couple of occasions she made solid decisions to leave the crease & play the puck -- nipping potential breakaways in the bud. Well done, Hailey.

#2 Star: (tie) Maxine Cimoroni, Ohio State; Sanni Vanhanen, Finland; and Jenna Raunio, Sweden
Don't know if Cimoroni watches Classic TV. But if she wants to Max Out and Get Smart, she could switch to Jersey #86. But in the meantime, she's doing just fine with #18. Charging the net with authority, Maxine nailed the 4th Buckeye Goal.

Setting up the play, Jenna gained possession of the puck along the right wing boards. Raunio forwarded the puck to Vanhanen. Sanni threaded a pass through to Cimoroni, and the charge was on.

#1 Star: (tie) Joy Dunne, United States; Sloane Matthews, Ohio State; Hilda Svensson, Sweden; and Mira Jungaker, Sweden
Coming on the lone OSU PP, the 3rd Buckeye Goal was one of the prettier backdoor plays you'll ever see.

There's no such thing as a 3rd Assist. But if there were, it would have been awarded to Mira. Operating up high, Jungaker directed a D2D pass to Svensson. Hilda, quarterbacking the PP from the point, directed the puck down low to Sloane. Matthews crisply sent the puck across the slot to Dunne, who Joyously slammed it home. Just another example of Dunne getting it done.

Best of luck to all of the Olympians in the upcoming Games. Do your countries proud!

Next Stargazing: Next weekend we're right back on Home Ice, hosting UMD. But with the Olympians on the way to Italy, it will be a case of "Next Woman Up." Make that "Next Women Up."

FYI, start times are back to normal, meaning 6:00 PM on Friday and 3:00 PM on Saturday. Beware of Schottenstein Center Traffic; particularly on Friday. Buckeye Men's Hockey is hosting Michigan on both days.

Short bench? It was not an issue tonight as the Buckeyes roared out to a 4-0 lead in the opening frame and never looked back. 13 skaters (8 forwards, 5 Defenders) suited up the for the Buckeyes tonight and they came out on fire. Scoring for Ohio State in the first period were Jocelyn Amos, Sloane Mattews, Kassidy Carmichael, and Jordan Baxter. Grace Sadura scored for the Bulldogs in the middle frame to cut Ohio State's lead to 4-1. Jocelyn Amos scored her second goal to put the Buckeyes back on top by four tallies. Neither team lit the lamp for the remainder of the period and the Bucks took a 5-1 lead into the final period. Jocelyn Amos completed her hat trick with a goal early in the third period to put Ohio State up 6-1. Rae Mayer scored later in the period for Minnesota-Duluth to make the final score 6-2. Shots on goal in this one were tied at 34. Buckeye netminder Hailey MacCloud was brilliant in net tonight, stopping 32 of the 34 shots she faced in the win. Eve Gascon and Sophia Villanueva combined to stop 28 of the 34 shots they faced for UMD. The two teams are back at it tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

Final Score From Friday, January 30th
Ohio State 6
Minnesota-Duluth 2
Playing With 13 Skaters? We'll Take A Shot At It!

osualum86 beat me to the punch, but here goes: 8 Forwards + 5 Defenders = 13 Stalwart Buckeye Skaters. Agreed, it wasn't an "issue" in Friday's game. But as we say here in Ohio, it was at the Heart Of It All. As it will be for the duration of the Olympic month.

The Buckeyes certainly took their shots. As did the Bulldogs. Each team had 34 of them. Ultimately the most prolific shooters garnered most of the mentions in this edition of the 3 Stars.

Early on, Buckeye fortunes got a major boost when the Bulldogs took a Stand Alone Major Penalty for Elbowing. With two PP conversions on 7 shots, Ohio State was off and running. Those early goals made a major difference. While there was lots of hockey remaining, the Bulldogs wound up chasing the lead for the balance of the game.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: (tie) Josie St. Martin, Minnesota-Duluth; and Hailey MacLeod, Ohio State
Two players squared off against their former teammates. Welcome back to the Ice Rink, Josie. It was fun to see your familiar hustle & determination again. Overall, St. Martin did herself proud, launching 6 shots on the Buckeye Net.

When a goalie faces her former teammates it poses a unique challenge. But Hailey was more than up to that challenge, controlling most of the game in OSU's defensive end. True, UMD dented MacLeod a couple of times. But Hailey saw more shots than usual, yet still won comfortably.

#3 Star: Caitlin Kraemer, Minnesota-Duluth
The productive Kraemer proved to be as good as advertised: Fast & Skilled, Caitlin created danger every time she hit the ice. Kraemer's 10 SOGs led all players. Credit the Buckeye Defense for keeping her off the scoresheet.

#2 Star: Emma Peschel, Ohio State
Want to be on the Stars List? Getting a Hat Trick of Assists is certainly a good start. And a good start on getting those assists is to post 9 SOGs. Emma's shot total led all Buckeyes, and was 2nd only to Kraemer's 10.

#1 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
In keeping with the "Honor The Shooters" theme, I'll note that Amos got credit for 8 SOGs. That was the 3rd highest total overall, trailing only Kraemer & Peschel. But the Hat Trick of Goals puts Jocelyn at the top of the list.

By opening the scoring, Jocelyn stepped up as the single biggest difference maker. The Amos tip on a shot by Maxine Cimorini gave us the highlight reel goal of the game. Finally, by attacking the Bulldog net from the left side, she capped off the OSU goal production with a nifty shot. Friday goal scoring? Jocelyn Amos was the Alpha and the Omega.

Next Stargazing: The Ohio State/St. UMD Rematch Saturday At 3:00 PM. Can The Baker's Dozen Buckeyes Complete The Sweep?

Short bench? It was not an issue tonight
Did you guys notice any "pattern" to how Muzerall was filling out the 'third line" with Rasmussen and Carmichael? I thought about try to track who was on the ice with who, particularly when Rasmussen and Carmichael were out, but the "quality" of the video made that next to impossible. Looking at faceoffs won and lost in the box score (the numbers of which don't properly add up, BTW), Matthews took more than she usually would, and while Petrie didn't take many, it was still more than her usual. So, anything noticeable or discernable?

Box score lists 14 skaters. Was there 14 or 13? Did goalie Kressin dress as a D?that’s what CHN app says.

If I understand there are usually 19 skaters. 5 at Olympics, plus 1 didn’t dress yesterday (Swiderski). Swiderski is significant contributor it seems. Any idea on her return date?

Yesterdays box score line up:
Forwards:

Cimoroni Amos Matthews
Malchino Baxter Petrie
Rasmussen Carmichael Wicks (normally a D?)

D:
Peschel Disher
Mccoshen Roth
Kressin?

It will be fun to watch this month of hockey in the wcha for those who are not too invested in the outcome.

Ohio State is one of the teams that regularly posts their line chart on Twitter. Yesterday's chart showed eight forwards and five D (and three goalies). The forwards were as you have it, minus Wicks, who is listed at D. Kressin listed at goalie. If Wicks spent any time at forward, the box score doesn't register any shots taken by her. (Kressin also all zeroes.)
