Re: Ohio State U. ( 2009-2010 )
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Men's hockey goalie Joseph Palmer has signed a one-year American Hockey League contract with the Rockford IceHogs and will forego his senior year of eligibility with the Buckeyes.
Palmer, a native of Yorkville, N.Y., was a fourth-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
"We wish Joe the best of luck," John Markell, Ohio State head coach, said. "He felt this was the right time in his hockey career to become a professional. He was a tremendous student-athlete for us and is close to graduating, with all intentions to complete his degree."
Palmer, a three-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes, was a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice as a communication major. He played in 68 games for the Scarlet and Gray, recording 25 wins, a 3.04 goals-against average and .889 save percentage, along with two shutouts. He was a member of Team USA at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship.
"Joe Palmer is another young goaltending prospect who will add some valuable depth to our goaltending position here in Rockford," Mark Bernard, general manager of minor league affiliations for the Blackhawks, said. "Goaltenders all mature at different rates and ages, and it will be a very exciting season for Joe as he begins his first as a professional. We plan to watch him closely and have him work with Developmental Goaltending Coach Wade Flaherty quite a bit."
