Ohio State Next Coach?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Blasi has applied... along with pooley, jones, dave smith, guentzel, and the princeton head coach (forgot his name)... thats all i know at this time... there is probably more but that is all i can confirm... so keep debating

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Do you have a credible source on the applicants? Now that his team has e ded the season, why not check out Bemidji State's Tom Serratorre?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Zero chance Serratore leaves Bemidji State. He has too many emotional ties to that program. From almost being eliminated as a program to taking them to the frozen four to building a new arena to being accepted into the WCHA. I dont see any amount of money that could pry him away from a program he built, literally with his bare hands.

My OSU head coaching wish list top 5
1. Kevin Sneddon
2. Rico Blasi
3. Bob Motzko
4. Nate Leaman
5. Danton Cole

OSUnow is full of sh**. Blasi would never apply at this stage of his season, in fear of it becoming a distraction to his team, if nothing else. Blasi would never apply period anyways. OSU will drag out this process until the Miami season ends so they can ask for permission to speak to Blasi to do their due diligence.

Freaking me out to see our (Union's) previous (Sneddon) and present (Leaman) coach. If you're on the search committee, please consider the former but not the latter. ;)

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

university procedures require the job posting to stay open until April 11. After that ( and only then) OSU reserves the right to approach people who did not apply. There's no way they have approached anyone at this time.

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

i'm not full of it... i really didnt believe it either but i have been assured that blasi has applied... also his team or anyone besides him would really know... so im guessing his team or staff has no idea... applicants are not announced to the public until the final 3 or 5 or however many finalists are picked

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

I have it on high authority (the Highest, actually) that Herb Brooks has also applied for the position. My understanding is that Red Berenson will be his top assistant and Scotty Bowman will be the primary recruiter. Rico doesn't have a chance...

So you know, but no one close to him knows...hmmm...being under contract, and still in season, it is quite likely he would need permission from his athletic director to even discuss the position, or he would be in violation of said contract...

Pat Quinn said it was ok to do it that way

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Maybe the AD has been on the phone and found out what it takes to run a top-flight program.

$300,000 plus for the coach, $100,000 plus for the assistants & Travel/recruiting expenses. In other words a $1 million per season.

Money they were already spending...

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Not exactly a comment that inspires confidence in this search.

A.D. Gene Smisth in the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Call me crazy, but didn't he just list Markell's qualifications? Compete in the top half most of the time, somebody who wants to be here, periodically compete for the championship and national picture...

Can you imagine Andy Geiger making that quote prior to going out and hiring JT or Thad? I'm not happy at all. The model for this hire should be what's happened in the fencing program. Ohio State had a little bit of tradition, having won a national championship, but had stagnated into an also-ran program for decades. Andy Geiger went out and "did something great." He sought a transformational figure who would maximize the resources available at one of the country's two largest athletic programs and move the program to the next level. He lured the former Soviet national coach to Ohio State. Results in the first seven years: 7 top 5 NCAA finishes; 2 National Championships; Numerous All-Americans; An Olympic Medalist.

Do Something Great, Gene....or go find a school where mediocrity is acceptable!

Amen - so far seems Gene is satisfied with B-Ball and Football being good and just appearing to care about the others. This looks a lot like the days before Geiger. I'm starting to wonder if Markell's contract was not renewed because it was too expensive...

You know, that might not be a bad thing. It could mean that they are looking to bring in a hungry, younger coach they can pay less early on and build performance incentives into the contract. I wonder how much impact the couple of OSU players they have on the search committee will have?

I heard that same thing a week or so ago, does anyone know BG's timetable for naming a coach?

OSU has the application open until the 11th but that doesn't preclude them from interviewing potential coaches. So...has anyone seen or heard anything about coaches coming to Columbus for interviews?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

Hckydoc I had the same question, with some of these insiders on here I thought we would have had reports on who has been in or was coming in for interviews by now. How does the Athletic Dept normally conduct their business?

Re: Ohio State Next Coach?

My sentiments exactly. His quotes in the Plain Dealer regarding expectations for the new coach were nothing short of disturbing. If he's not willing to bring in a coach that is going to get this program to the next level (not just continue the mediocrity, which is what was implied in the Plain Dealer quotes), then step aside and let someone else run the athletic department. With Ohio State's resources and facilities, mediocrity should never be acceptable.
