Ohio State Buckeyes 2020-2021 ... Unfinished Business

Final Scores From The Bemidji Series

Tour De Force For The Second Line Forwards

Still trying to ease back into the saddle in this most difficult of seasons. First, my make-up work.

You know, New Year's Day really should be reserved for College Football. But thank goodness no one told the RBG Line. The 2nd Line Forwards weren't just productive against the Beavers; they were amazing.

For the record:

Three Stars Of The Bemidji Series: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

#3 Star: Gabby Rosenthal, Ohio State
1 Goal; 2 Assists.

#2 Star: Jenn Gardiner, Ohio State
3 Goals; 2 Assists.

#1 Star: Jenna Buglioni, Ohio State
3 Goals; 3 Assists. Jenna had a point on every Buckeye Goal in the New Year's Day win!

Up Next: The Friday Home Game against Minnesota State went well. Will try to recognize the Stars of that game shortly.

Final Score From Friday, January 23rd
Ohio State 3
Minnesota State 0

A Taste Of Normalcy

Tired of Covid Chaos? Join the club. But Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink, the Buckeyes restored some order. With remarkable Control, OSU parlayed three nearly identical periods into a 3-0 shutout. Can't find the double meaning? Get Smart.

1st Period: 1 Goal For; No Goals Against. Shots? 20-6 Buckeyes.
2nd Period: Deja Vu. 1 Goal For; No Goals Against. Shots? 17-10 Buckeyes.
3rd Period: With Apologies To Yogi Berra, Deja Vu All Over Again. 1 Goal For; No Goals Against. Shots? 18-9 Buckeyes.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Minnesota State Honorable Mention: Tristen Truax
This selection isn't really based on stats, although Tristen did have a couple of blocked shots. I just felt that the Senior Defender was strong on the break-out, hard-working on the backcheck & tough to play against overall.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Liz Schepers & Emma Maltais
Liz was 16 of 25 in the Face-Off Circle. Schepers bagged an Assist & Contributed 7 SOG. +2 for the game; not a bad night's work.

Emma matched the Schepers Assist & the +2 Rating. Maltais had 12 energetic SOG to lead all players.

#3 Star: Andrea Braendli, Ohio State
Andrea did her job perfectly, earning the shutout. She didn't face a ton of shots, but Mankato does have some talented shooters. So there certainly were some quality saves. Braendli In Net = Buckeye Control.

#2 Star: Riley Brengman, Ohio State
Riley came to us from China, Michigan. (NE of Detroit/St. Clair River Area) We're glad she did. Friday night she sure looked comfortable on the 1st 'D' pair with Madison Bizal. Brengman was +3 for the night, to lead all players. Riley found the Scoresheet with a pair of Secondary Assists.

#1 Star: Tatum Skaggs, Ohio State
Good things happen when you go to the net. Tatum did. Good things happened. Twice. To open & close the scoring.

Up Next: Rematch With The Mavericks @ 3:07PM On Saturday.

It took the Buckeyes 26 seconds to light the lamp in today's game and they never looked back, winning today's game by a final score of 7-2 to earn a sweep over the Mavericks of Minnesota State. Liz Schepers opened the scoring for the Buckeyes. Ramsey Parent would get her first goal as a Buckeye to make it 2-0. Ramsey has really been working hard this season and it was great to see her get rewarded! Paetyn Levis scored for the Buckeyes to push the lead to 3-0. Jenn Gardiner scored late in the period to put Ohio State up 4-0 and that is how the first period ended. The teams traded goals in the second period with Jenna Buglioni scoring for Ohio State and Jamie Nelson scoring for the Mavericks. The teams went to their respective locker rooms for the second intermission with Ohio State leading 5-1. Minnesota State opened the scoring in the third period on a goal from Kelsey King to make it 5-2, but that was as close as the Mavericks would get. Ohio State found the back of the net twice in the third period on goals from Gabby Rosenthal and Brooke Bink to make the final score 7-2. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 41-26. Buckeye goaltender Andrea Braendli started and saved 13 of the 15 shots she faced. Amanda Thiele came on in the third period for Ohio State and stopped all 11 shots she faced. For the Mavericks, Calla Frank saved 16 of the 20 shots she faced in the first period. She was relieved by Lauren Barbro in the second period. Barbro stopped 18 of the 21 shots she faced. Ohio State will host Minnesota next weekend. Minnesota State will return home to face Bemidji State.

OSU wins 7-2 today. Surprising that with OSU scoring 7 goals, none were by Maltais...Still doesn't have a goal this year.

Yup. Noticed that myself today.

But my observation is that Emma is still playing with great energy & generating tons of offense. At this point the rest of the WCHA is pretty familiar with her. Opposing teams likely make keeping Maltais off the scoreboard a point of emphasis. But reducing her goal output may be a pyrrhic victory. It just means more playmaking & more opportunities for teammates.

Further, if she just keeps playing the way she is, the goals will come. Maybe the Maltais Goal Explosion will come next weekend. I'm sure we can agree that would be a good thing.

Hi Emma! You're welcome.:)

The Silent Majority here in Minny would beg to differ!!!

Indeed & of course. My post was supposed to have a couple of smilies, to make the meaning even more clear. But for some reason my smilies were disabled & I couldn't figure out why. Still, I'm confident that the playful intent was plain for all to see.

Final Score From Saturday, January 24th
Ohio State 7
Minnesota State 2
Lucky Number 7

7 Goals. 7 Different Goal Scorers. What about Ohio State #7 Eve Savander? A sparkling +5 for the game to lead all players.

I dunno, with a run of 7's like that, maybe we all should have been buying Power Ball tickets on Saturday? Regardless, a fine performance by the Buckeyes completed the sweep.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Minnesota State Honorable Mention: (tie)Kelsey King & Jamie Nelson
Both teams showed some depth on Saturday. None of the six players recognized come from their school's top units.

On the first Maverick tally, Kelsey launched Jamie's scoring rush. On the second MSU goal, King took care of things all by herself.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Eve Savander
See the +5 mentioned above. To be a little more specific, Eve wasn't on the ice for either Beaver goal, but was there to enjoy 5 of the 7 Buckeye tallies.

#3 Star: Teghan Inglis, Ohio State
The key moments of this game came early. The top unit cashed in just 26 seconds into the game. That beat yesterday's quick start by 5 seconds. But the Buckeyes really broke the game open during the balance of the 1st Period. At the end of the first period, the Buckeyes led 4-0, having outshot the Mavericks 20-5.

Teghan was right in the middle of the onslaught, assisting on the second & fourth goals. On Goal #2, A well place dump-in started the play. On Goal #4, Inglis had the Primary Assist, sending the Buckeyes to the first intermission in a very strong position.

#2 Star: Ramsey Parent, Ohio State
Ramsey bagged her first goal as a Buckeye! Hope she kept the puck.

Remember that Inglis dump in? It was Paetyn Levis who gave chase. With great hustle & speed, Levis won the race to the puck with surprising ease. Next, the centering pass to Parent in slot. Puck slammed home; Buckeye Hockey history made.

#1 Star: Paetyn Levis, Ohio State
With her impressive assist in the books, Paetyn decided it was time for a goal of her own. On Right 'D,' Riley Brengman captured the puck in the neutral zone, then fired the puck to Levis on the Left Wing. Paetyn charged the net and buried the shot for what proved to be the GWG.

Up Next: Home Series Against The Golden Gophers.

In tonight's battle between two of the top teams in the country, the Gophers outlasted the Buckeyes, winning 7-4. The Gophers opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Abbey Murphy to take a 1-0 lead. Ohio State answered with goals from Liz Schepers and Jennifer Gardiner to take a 2-1 lead. The Gophers would get a goal from Grace Zumwinkle late in the first period to send the teams into their respective locker rooms tied at 2-2. The Gophers took the lead in the second period on a power play goal from Emily Oden, which ended the Buckeyes streak of being perfect on the penalty kill this season. Ohio State would answer on a goal from Emma Maltais to tie it at 3-3. The Gophers struck back on a goal from Abigail Boreen to take a 4-3 lead and that is how the second period ended. The Bucks would tie it up at 4-4 on a goal from Jenna Buglioni. That would be it for Ohio State as Minnesota would score an even strength goal, another power play goal, and an empty netter at the end to win it 7-4. The Gopher goals were scored by Taylor Heise, Crystalyn Hengler, and Catie Skaja. Ohio State outshot the Gophers 33-31. Buckeye backstop Andrea Braendli stopped 24 of the 30 shots she faced. Minnesota netminder Lauren Bench stopped 29 of the 33 shots she faced to get the win. The teams are back at it tomorrow with game time at 3:07 pm EST.

Trading Goals With Gophers: Buyer Beware

Over the full history of Women's D-1 Hockey, it's reasonable to argue that Minnesota has been the strongest program in terms of offense. So getting into a high scoring contest with the Golden Gophers is a speculative, iffy proposition. But if any Buckeye team can pull it off, it's the 2020-21 edition.

The game was a standoff for 50 minutes. The Gophers won the last 10 minutes. It is what it is. More opportunities lie ahead, starting with Saturday's tilt.

Presumably this won't be a surprise: But all of the players receiving recognition in this edition of The Three Stars are forwards.
Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Minnesota Honorable Mention: (tie)Abbey Murphy; Taylor Wente and Grace Zumwinkle
The Gophers' top forward line was amazing and dynamic, as expected. But even for this group, the way they started the game impressed. They exploded out of the starting blocks. It culminated in the first goal, scored by Abbey. With 10 more goals to come, it might be easy to overlook the first one. But it certainly got Minnesota off on the right foot. It also prevented the Buckeyes from reprising their fast starts against the MSU Mavericks.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: Liz Schepers
Liz scored the first Buckeye goal, a vital response to the fast Gopher start. That set the tone for a highly competitive game. Later on, Liz added an assist on the Jen Buglioni goal, completing a 2 point, +1 night.

#3 Star: Emily Oden, Minnesota
The Two Gopher PP Goals had an enormous impact on the game. Both conversions gave them such an emotional lift. Emily converted the 5 on 3 opportunity, which gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead at the time.

Then, midway through the 3rd, Oden started the play on the GWG. Emily's strong forecheck behind the Buckeye Net dislodged the puck, allowing Audrey Wethington to escape and feed the goal scorer.

#2 Star: Emma Maltais, Ohio State
D2D was so hoping Maltais would have a big game, and Emma obliged. Since the Gophers won anyhow, call it a perfect storm for D2D.

Regardless, it was great to see Emma end the goal drought on a slick breakaway. From there, it must be mentioned that the wondrous playmaker had the primary assist on the other 3 Buckeye goals.

Emma Maltais is much appreciated, even by opposing fans. ;)

#1 Star: Taylor Heise, Minnesota
When a 4-4 tie is broken with less than 10 minutes to go, that's a big moment. When it winds up being the GWG, it's huge. Taylor delivered. Receiving the Wethington pass, Heise carried the puck to the left point and fired. Velocity? C+ Accuracy? A+ Perfect placement in the lower right hand corner of the net.

Like Oden before her, Heise followed up with an Assist. That insurance goal basically put the game out of reach with 3:16 left. Now I'm sure goal scorer Crystalyn Hengler would be the first to admit she caught a break. On what was almost certainly an attempted pass, the puck deflected off a Buckeye and into the net. But again, Beware of the Gopher Offense. They find ways to score.

No announcer on the BIG10+ stream? Every other venue on FloHockey or BIG10+ that I've viewed the Gophers on has provided audio commentary. This is Div 1 hockey? Come on OSU!

No instant replay either. :-(

OSU has the worst video feed in the WCHA and considering fans cannot attend and have to watch the games online, they need to get that corrected. There is no excuse for that.

As for today's game, the Buckeyes clamped down on D today to win 3-1 and earn a split. Tatum Skaggs opened the scoring for Ohio State to put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the first period. The teams traded goals in the second period with Ohio State's Sara Saekkinen finding the back of the net to put the Bucks up 2-0. The Gophers would get a goal later in the second period from Abigail Boreen and the teams headed to the second intermission with the Buckeyes leading 2-1. The only goal scored in the third period was an empty-netter by Ohio State's Liz Schepers after Minnesota had pulled their goaltender late in the period. Ohio State outshot Minnesota today 44-30 with Buckeye backstop Amanda Thiele stopping 29 of the 30 shots she faced to get the win. Minnesota netminder Makayla Pahl saved 41 of the 43 shots she faced. The Buckeyes will get next weekend off, then will travel to Minneapolis for a weekend series with the Gophers. Minnesota will return home to face Wisconsin next weekend.

One other thing, it was great to make some new friends at the Varsity Club after the games! Met some Minnesota parents and Ohio State parents (new freshman players) and had a great time! Regardless of which team you are rooting for, the camaraderie of the women's hockey community is awesome.

Final Score From Saturday, January 30th
Ohio State 3
Minnesota 1
The Defense Never Rested. Thank Goodness.

Friday evening was tough to accept for the defense. Seven goals yielded is a season high. Even discounting the empty-netter, six goals would still be the season high.

What a difference a day makes. This time the OSU defense -- from the Goaltender on out -- frustrated the vaunted U of M offense. The Neutral Zone defense was magnificent. Countless times a well-supported forechecker was able to generate a turnover. The Buckeyes were stingy in the Defensive Zone, giving up a manageable 30 SOG. Perfect Penalty Kill; Blocked Shots; Winning Loose Pucks; Intensity; Hustle. All Present and Accounted For. A great team effort.

Three Stars Of The Game: Decidedly Unofficial and Just For Fun

Minnesota Honorable Mention: Makayla Pahl
Sometimes Hockey fans will chant "It's all your fault" at an opposing keeper. Was it Makayla's fault? Not in the least. Pahl was quite effective, saving 41 of 43 Buckeye shots. Included in the collection of saves: A couple of thwarted breakaways. Had those breakaways been converted, it might have been a more comfortable victory. Instead, Makayla gave the Gophers a great chance to win. The outcome was in doubt right up to the Maltais empty-netter.

Ohio State Honorable Mention: (tie)Sara Saekinen and Paetyn Levis
The top six Buckeye forwards get the lion's share of the ice time, and understandably so. But the 3rd Line keeps coming through with vital additions to the scoresheet.

Sara bagged the GWG today with fine top shelf shot to the short side. Paetyn had a pair of primary assists. More often than not, such contributions earn a star. But today we honor the defense.

#3 Star: (tie)Amy Potomak, Minnesota; Olivia Knowles, Minnesota; and Abigail Boreen, Minnesota
The remarkable Gopher scoring play was completed with just four-tenths of second remaining in the middle period. Amy won an offensive zone face-off to herself, the whipped the puck on goal. Pad save to the corner. Potomak then collected her own rebound, and fired the puck to Knowles at the right point. Stiff shot to the net by Olivia. Meanwhile, Abigail had been waging a spirited battle in the slot to set a screen. The puck apparently glanced off Boreen and into the goal cage.

The Gopher tally came just 48 seconds after the Buckeyes had taken a 2-0 lead. Just when you feel a little bit comfortable, these Gophers have an immediate answer. To beat them the defense can never rest.

#2 Star: Amanda Thiele, Ohio State
Well Amanda, you deserve some more playing time. How would you like a start? Against the Gophers? Gee, thanks coach.

That's how most of us would react. But Thiele is an elite athlete; she was more than ready for the challenge. But for the last second goal described above, Amanda would have had a shutout. Time and again Thiele steered pucks out of harm's way. A very poised performance by a Freshman in just her 3rd D-1 game.

#1 Star: Ohio State Team Defense
Part of me wants to list all 17 Skaters in this spot. The whole team has my respect and appreciation for today's defensive effort. But since that's impractical, I'll use statistical evidence to honor 3 of the stalwarts:

Lisa Bruno; 4 Blocked Shots
Sophie Jaques; 3 Blocked Shots
Riley Brengman; +2 To Lead All Players

And just as importantly, a Star goes to every Buckeye who cleared a rebound out of the OSU slot. I'm going to have to trust the Coaching Staff to break down the game film and give kudos to each deserving player. Several timely clearing plays saved this game.

Up Next: Back Against The Golden Gophers; This Time In Minneapolis. An Epic Season Series Continues.

The defense has indeed been the backbone of this team, denying the shooting lanes, blocked shots, hustling to the puck and getting the puck in transition up ice.
One of my daughter's coaches in her sport was very defensive minded and his mantra was it only take ONE score to win a game if your defense plays flawless!
in a sport as quick and fluid as hockey there may be no such thing as a flawlerss defense as one step behind on a play or not seeing the open player charging to the open side of the net for the pass can change the dynamics of the game in a heartbeat but I'd say our ladies do better than average.

When UW played OSU their team D was fantastic, extremely impressive.

Someone's playing favorites again, we split with Minnesota and they stay at #2 and we drop to #4? Explain that one to me with an excuse I'd accept as plausible!
