Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

Well '86, it seems that some of our esteemed guests decided to have a bit of a kerfuffle at our place. Guess I'll toss in a couple of quick takes.

This is wicked funny. Even for an OSU fan. And a welcome contrast to the grim, judgmental tone over on the Transfers thread.

For my part, I don't believe your intent was sexist. My sense is that you're a call-it-as-you-see-it guy, and that you would have been willing to make the exact same comment about a male coach.

HOWEVER: Let's not go into denial. Lindsay is not paranoid. Big picture, female coaches sometimes do get a "shorter leash" than their male counterparts.

Every new coach deserves a chance to put their program in place. Regime change generally means more turnover than normal. Of course stability remains the goal. But given the situation Coach Muzzerall inherited, I would say she's entitled to a little extra slack, not less than usual.

Last, and certainly least. But curiosity compels me to ask. What in the heck did you try to use as an emoticon? At least on my screen, it was blocked.

PGB thanks for lightening the mood. There is a reason this is one of the best threads on the board :)

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

...sure it’s a fact OSU is going through a lot of asst coaches. Couldnsee them losing either asst and not being surprised, just bc if the nature of the business, and in Cassels case cause he just joined woho a year ago. It’s a worthy topic of discussion, especially for a program that is high profile like Osu. And by high profile, I mean, has a thread on this board, haha. While on that topic - there are other programs going through assistants at the same rate, it’s just that this program is being talked about. It’s not always because the coach is difficult to work for, but even if it is, so what? It kind of comes with the territory of working/playing D1. Some coaches are tough, whether out of intention due to necessity, or just because they are still figuring out their style. In my opinion, a place like OSU needs to be going all out, all the time on account of the league they play in and the various challenges they have as far as depth or lack their of, compared to other teams. Not to mention, the school is massive, it IS a football school despite the work of the hockey folks and the school has had at least 2 scandals in the past 12 months, that probably only complicate things as far as recruiting coaches or players, in a state not known for girls hockey. It probably is exhausting for everyone, but until they build up a winning program and the ability to recruit the best exhausting and intense might be how it is.
No question that Ohio State Athletics operates under a microscope. And you've hit on a real irony. Because we "win too much" in Football & Basketball, the jealousy & unfairness flows freely. In truth, our Hockey programs are underdog teams. But most of the sports world puts on blinders & doesn't see it that way.

Still, it's OK. I'm content with the hand we've been dealt. We're in a better position to break into the top group than most of the underdogs. No sympathy requested. A little more fairness, for the head coaches on down? Yeah, that'd be nice.

Separate from that though, for me it’s impossible not to notice the lengths people go to to be diplomatic in their criticisms (or not) depending on the person they are talking about. I don’t really care for the coaches sake. The coaches can handle it, and hopefully are smart enough not to waste time on the boards.
The coaches are tough enough to handle it. Which is good, because some of them DO read USCHO. I know of multiple instances from both Men's & Women's Hockey, from over the years. Don't know if that applies to any of the current coaches of either OSU program. And I'm perfectly happy not knowing that.;)

Does it suck for a fan who just wants to able to be informed about and click on a puff piece in a coach without having to read “she doesn’t love her self at all” or some snark like that though? Yes it gets annoying after a while.
No question about it.

PGB thanks for lightening the mood. There is a reason this is one of the best threads on the board :)
Appreciate that. Hope we can continue to live up to those kind words.

What is the word on the incoming freshmen? Is it a good group?

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

Anyone want to guess on lineups?

Ahockeydad ... great question. I'll play.

I will start this with the line-up sheet from our last game last season (graduating seniors in UPPERCASE).

Forward lines

Emma Maltais-CHARLY DAHLQUIST-Tatum Skaggs
Paetyn Levis-JACYN REEVES-MADISON FIELD
Liz Schepers-Sara Saekkinen-Rebecca Freiburger
Samanta Bouley-ERIN LANGERMEIER-Olivia Soares
Gabby Rosenthal

Defensive lines

Jincy Dunne-Sophie Jaques
LAUREN BOYLE-Lisa Bruno
Madison Bizal-Elise Riemenschneider

Goaltenders

Andrea Braendli
Amanda Zeglen*
Lynsey Wallace

I will start with the back end. It's obviously Andrea Braendli's net after the freshman season she had. Lynsey Wallace and incoming freshman Quinn Kuntz will be solid backups. I put an asterisk by Amanda Zeglen's name because she is transferring to Clarkson. She is a solid goaltender, she will do great at Clarkson.

With the d-lines, five of our top six D's are back. After being injured for all but a couple games last season, hopefully Eve Savander is back for her sophomore year. Eve actually started with Jincy that first weekend vs Quinnipiac, then got injured and missed the rest of the season. Along with those six, there are four new freshmen who I think will challenge for playing time this season in Maddie Babnik, Addi Scribner, Miranda Anthony, and Teghan Inglis.

Now for the other end of the ice ... the big concern for me is coming up with some centers since we graduated three centers from last year's team. I am thinking Sara Saekkinen may move up and center our top line with Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs, but that's just me speculating. Someone else may emerge and center that top line. Only one player returns to our second line in Paetyn Levis, who really came on in her rookie season. Paetyn started the season on the third or fourth line and by the end of the season was on the second line. Last season's third line was Sara Saekkinen centering Liz Schepers and Rebecca Freiburger. All three return this season. The fourth line was Samantha Bouley, Erin Langermeier, and Olivia Soares. Samantha Bouley and Olivia Soares return and I hope to see them get more ice time this season as they have both earned it. Gabby Rosenthal will be back for her sophomore season and I believe she will take the next step and challenge for a spot in one of those top three lines. In addition to those nine returning players, three highly-regarded freshman forwards will be coming in to challenge the returning players for spots ... Ramsey Parent, Brooke Bink, and Jennifer Gardiner.

So, honestly, other than Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs on the wings of our top line, I have no clue how the other spots are going to shake out, but I will say this ... It has been nice watching Coach Nadine bring in great recruiting classes and add depth to our roster. I cannot remember a time when we had this much talent and depth. It is going to be a fun year and I cannot wait to see the new freshman players.

Back to you, Ahockeydad ... do you have any guesses? :)

Good job all around. I really don't have any additional insight to add. But like you, I'm greatly looking forward to seeing the new freshman play, and will form opinions as we move forward.

Kudos to the posters who already have informed opinions on the recruits, before they ever hit the ice for their new teams. I feel like I watch a lot of hockey. But for most of the players, I don't see them play in person until they arrive at the D-1 Level.

43 days until opening night, and 49 days until Mrs 86 and I hop a plane to Minnesota for the first road games of the season at St. Cloud! Got the countdown going!! :)

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

I have to correct my earlier post regarding this year's team. I looked at the roster today and it appears that Samantha Bouley is no longer with the team. I am not going to speculate on why she left the team or why she was not getting more playing time. Samantha was a quiet young lady who always gave it her best when she did get ice time. I am going to miss seeing her out there. I wish her the best in whatever she does.

More of a WCHA fan but curious if the Shattack kid Bink and Gardiner Canadian U18 woman can be a combo like Shirley Curl that Wisconsin had last year.

Your guess is probably as good as mine. When I made my post regarding the line up, with regard to the incoming players, that information was based on what I have read about them as I have not seen them play in person. It will be interesting to see how the line up shakes out. I can't wait for the season to get going!

MIC DROP

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

Pgb, your title was somewhat prophetic. Went over to the WCHA thread. This team is getting zero respect from the rest of the league. Hope the girls are reading it.

In other news, former Buckeye Natalie Spooner is competing on Battle of the Blades this season. Here is a link to vote for her!

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2019-2020: Muzzling All Detractors

I believe the players have respect from the teams they play. The Buckeyes will be good again and they will need a bounce back season from Skaggs to shore up the offense.

The league coaches picked tOSU to finish third. What respect are you thinking that the Buckeyes deserve that they aren't receiving? Should they be ranked above either of the teams that played for the title last year in your eyes?

They are where they should be at this point as we guess at who is any good. I think their goaltending is better than UM, but UM is a deeper team overall. Maybe they are a little low in the national preseason, but that is a HUGE crapshoot.
