It’s always hard to get a great read on a game from the online stream, but I thought Ohio State had the upper hand for much of the game, as the shots on goal indicate. Mercyhurst’s top line (Isbell, Vasko, Nuutinen) was impressive, and Blair played a solid game in net, but after that, there isn’t much to write about for the Lakers. Both of OSU’s goals were much like the Mankato series in that the only way they found the back of the net was on 2nd chance opportunities. The Buckeyes were fortunate not to end up with a tie in a game where I would say they thoroughly outplayed their opponent. If this team wants to have a successful postseason run, and not be an also-ran, it will be important for them to learn to score more often early in games to put away teams rather than grind out wins against overmatched opponents.

I thought Ohio State lacked that spark to have intensity in trying to score. After the one goal lead they seemed like they tried to sit on it which usually never works out.
Most of the 3rd when OSU would bring the puck in the offensive zone they just kept it along the boards and had to battle for possession of it. Rarely did they try to take it to the net or take a shot other than from a bad angle. We were doing line changes too much when we should have been applying offensive pressure.
From my observation Mercyhurst's goalie would be most vulnerable top shelf corners but we were never elevating the puck to hit her weak spots. Only won the game because someone finally went top shelf on the shot.

I'm sure the timeout made sense from a Mercyhurst perspective. Slow down the Buckeye push; end the chaos of the previous shift. Trouble is, said chaos was produced by the conspiratorial magic of Dahlquist/Maltais/Skaggs. The fortuitous timeout gave the Buckeye forwards a precious minute of rest, and a second try at breaking the tie.
They did.
Honorable Mention: (tie)Andrea Braendli; Ohio State and Kennedy Blair; Mercyhurst
Both Goalies turned in stingy, Grinch-Like performances. Both seemed impenetrable 1 on 1. Even the occasional rebounds were steered safely away into empty, harmless space. Not much generosity going on here. Tough for individual stars to shine on offense.
But in the end, there were 3 lovely presents under the tree. It just took real team effort to get them wrapped up and delivered.

Deep into the 2nd Period, Sophie Jacques sprung Liz Schepers on a short breakaway from the blue line. Liz broke in alone and steered a nice backhand on target. Blair was more than equal to this initial attempt, kicking out her left leg to make the stop. But as the sprawling Laker Keeper tried to pull the puck under her body, the Buckeyes kept coming. Rebecca Freiburger was the first time arrive, and apparently had the key touch. Gabby Rosenthal got to the slot an instant later, also making a shooting motion. Only the hockey gods know for sure. The guess here is that #15 & #16 won't mind sharing the glory.

Deep into the 3rd Period, Stacy Morgan won a tough puck battle in her defensive end, and launched a Laker counter-attack. True, Stacy wound up on the ice. But the puck wound up with Sam Isbell, and the rush was on.
Summer-Rae Dobson didn't get an assist on play. But she played a crucial role by driving the net, taking a Buckeye defender with her, and providing a screen on the eventual shot. Alexa Vasko was only too happy to take advantage of the space created by Dobson. Receiving the crossing pass from Isbell, Vasko ripped a shot under the crossbar and into the Buckeye net.

I am late getting on, so I will just recap today's game, and I am going to need a box score for this one! As Hockeybuckeye alluded to, Ohio State looked and played like a top ten team today. I am not going to expect them to score that many goals everytime out, but with the firepower on this team, scoring goals should not be as big of a problem as it has been in recent weeks. One thing that is really encouraging is the depth we now have in the program as the Buckeyes were down two forwards and two D's today.
Today's game started like last night's with neither team scoring for most of the first period. Then, at the 18:55 mark, the Buckeyes' Tatum Skaggs lit the lamp to make it 1-0 Ohio State. 33 seconds later, freshman Paetyn Levis scored her first-ever goal as a Buckeye to make it 2-0, and that is how the first period ended. OSU's Emma Maltais scored early in the second period to make it 3-0. MU's Sarah Nelles scored a few minutes later to bring the Lakers to within two at 3-1. That was as close as Mercyhurst would get as Jacyn Reeves would score a short-handed goal at the 13:04 mark of the second period to put Ohio State up 4-1 and that is how the second period would end. The third period saw a plethora of goals, six total. The problem for the Lakers was five of the six were scored by the Buckeyes. Charly Dahlquist scored at the 6:22 mark and started a stretch where four goals were scored in a minute-and-a-half span. Dahlquist's goal put the Bucks up 5-1, then Mercyhurst's Molly Blasen scored at the 6:34 mark to bring the Lakers to within 5-2. It took all of 19 seconds for Dahlquist to add her second goal to make it 6-2 at the 6:53 mark. Ohio State's Liz Schepers would score on a nice wrap-around to make it 7-2 at the 7:46 mark in the third period. Charly Dahlquist would complete her hat trick with at goal at the 9:55 point, making it 8-2 in favor of Ohio State. Liz Schepers would score her second goal at the 19:38 point to make the final score 9-2 in favor of Ohio State. The Buckeyes outshot Mercyhurst 40-25 in today's game with Buckeye goaltender Andrea Braendli stopping 23 of the 25 shots she faced. Mercyhurst ended up playing all three of their goaltenders, who combined to stop 31 of the 40 shots they faced. Kennedy Blair started the game and stopped 16 of the 19 shots she faced. Blair was pulled for Sarah McDonnell, who stopped 8 of the 12 shots she faced. McDonnell was relieved by Leah Klassen, who saved 7 of the 9 shots she faced. Both teams will now break for the Holidays. Coming out of the break, Mercyhurst will host a pair of games vs Colgate on 1/5-1/6. Ohio State will host a couple of exhibition games on those same dates against the NWHL-leading Minnesota Whitecaps.

As for the Visitors from Mercyhurst: It's safe to say that Saturday's game was much more representative of the quality of their club. As NHL Great Bob Gainey once said: Sometimes when a good team breaks, it breaks hard. That appeared to be what happened to the Lakers Sunday, as they went through all 3 of their goalies. Must have been a trying afternoon. The Lakers will probably want to delete the Sunday recording and just move on.

Lisa's playing with increasing confidence, and it's great to see. Receiving the puck at the right point from Tatum Skaggs, Bruno drove the puck to the slot, creating the opportunity for the first Dahlquist Goal. It was an interesting trip. Along the way Emma Maltais was being stick-lifted and wish-boned to the ice by a Laker Defender. But Lisa kept her cool, and swerved around the wreckage. She then directed the puck to a wide open Charly, and the 3rd Period Feeding Frenzy was on.
Mercyhurst Honorable Mention Sarah Nelles
Strong game on Left Wing for Sarah. Her hustle and determination certainly caught the eye. All the hard work was rewarded when she bagged the first Laker goal. Hard to believe she's "only" a third line player.
#3 Star: Liz Schepers, Ohio State
Liz was flying today, and had two goals to show for it. Naturally she had good helpers on both tallies. But we went with a "team theme" yesterday, so I needed to get out the telescope and identify some specific stars today. Not only did Schepers have a multi-goal game, she never quit -- capping off the scoring with just 22 seconds left in the contest.
#2 Star: (tie) Madison Bizal, Ohio State; and Emma Maltais, Ohio State
Everyone on the team brought wonderful things to the feast. Tough to choose a favorite dish. Sometimes you do need to consult the scoresheet to sort out the menu. In this case, one stat jumped of the page. Two Buckeyes were a stupefying +6 for the game: Madison Bizal representing the Defense; Emma Maltais for the Offense. While I'm sure that +/- number isn't unprecedented, it's pretty rare for players to be that productive and have that much fun in a single game.
#1 Star: Charly Dahlquist, Ohio State
While her teammates were contributing to the feast one dish at a time, Charly brought a whole smorgasbord to the table. 3 Goals; 1 Assist; 10 Shots On Goal; +4 for the game. Oh, and did we mention that the goals came in a span of just 3 minutes 23 Seconds? Wow. And just to make it a complete dinner, Dahlquist blocked 2 shots as well.

In sharp contrast to yesterday's cliff-hanger, the Buckeyes hosted a Sunday Soiree that would have made Old Fezziwig proud. A bountiful feast of goals provided plenty of holiday cheer for all. Gluttony in the best sense of the word. OK, the festivities didn't literally include A Christmas Carol. What was even more impressive for OSU is that they scored most of the goals with MU's best player on the ice - Nuutinen was a -6
Extra tidbit: Mercyhurst has only surrended more than 7 goals twice in program history. The other time was January 25, 2002 in an 11-1 loss to Dartmouth.

Not that being shut down makes a player a goat. But yes, the Buckeyes' success working against Nuutinen was gratifying, and the -6 is a shocking number. That's gotta be a career low.
On the Buckeye side it's a great win to be cherished; a foundation to build on. But we also need to stay humble. This weekend's results tied the all-time series between the schools at 4-4. Nothing wrong with that for either program. It just reflects the fact that, big picture, this has been a close competition.
Well, my niche is finding the 3 Stars, not the 3 Goats.

The Buckeyes actually held the lead for two long stretches. In fact, the only time the Whitecaps led all day was at the end of the game. But in the 3rd Period and the OT, the Whitecaps found a higher gear that Buckeyes couldn't match. For the final 23:18, the visitors outshot the home team 21-2.
And yet, the result was very much in doubt until the last instant. When the game-winner found the net, the Ice Rink fell silent, almost in disbelief. On paper, of course the pros should win. But these Buckeyes have taught us to believe. We still do.
Whitecaps Honorable Mention: Kendall Coyne Schofield
Kendall had the primary assist on the GWG. Perhaps more impressively, she personally put 12 shots on net and was +3 for the game. Along with her first line mates, she was a dynamic force all afternoon long.
Buckeyes Honorable Mention: (tie)Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs
Emma and Tatum combined for two pretty goals in this one. A tiny bad bounce on an odd-man rush likely prevented a third. And had the Buckeyes actually taken a 3-1 lead, who knows?
#3 Star: Amanda Boulier, Whitecaps
Along with 'D' Partner Lee Stecklein, Amanda had no goals against and was on the ice for 2 of the 3 Whitecap tallies. Translation: +2. Boulier's GWG came on a shot from the blue line, right up middle. Now I've seen harder shots in my time. But the placement was smart & precise, just inside the right post, about a foot off the ice. A triumph of accuracy.
#2 Star: Andrea Braendli, Buckeyes
Andrea turned away 50 shots from world class shooters. Her rebound control was excellent. At 3:18 of the Overtime, she fell one save short. But Braendli certainly made the NWHL Pros work hard for their victory. An outstanding performance.
#1 Star: Hannah Brandt, Whitecaps
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. Who's The Most Skillful Of Them All? Today's answer would be Hannah Brandt. Constantly play-making and shooting with laser sharp accuracy, Hannah bagged two goals & an assist. Brandt also matched Coyne's 12 Shot, +3 Production. The Whitecaps top line is mighty impressive. Hannah is the spark plug.

For the most part, this was a friendly exhibition. Now it didn't degenerate into an All-Star Game by any means. But with somewhat less intensity than league play, skill was allowed to flourish.The Buckeyes actually held the lead for two long stretches. In fact, the only time the Whitecaps led all day was at the end of the game. But in the 3rd Period and the OT, the Whitecaps found a higher gear that Buckeyes couldn't match. For the final 23:18, the visitors outshot the home team 21-2.
And yet, the result was very much in doubt until the last instant. When the game-winner found the net, the Ice Rink fell silent, almost in disbelief. On paper, of course the pros should win. But these Buckeyes have taught us to believe. We still do.

Whitecaps Honorable Mention: Kendall Coyne Schofield
Kendall had the primary assist on the GWG. Perhaps more impressively, she personally put 12 shots on net and was +3 for the game. Along with her first line mates, she was a dynamic force all afternoon long.
Buckeyes Honorable Mention: (tie)Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs
Emma and Tatum combined for two pretty goals in this one. A tiny bad bounce on an odd-man rush likely prevented a third. And had the Buckeyes actually taken a 3-1 lead, who knows?
#3 Star: Amanda Boulier, Whitecaps
Along with 'D' Partner Lee Stecklein, Amanda had no goals against and was on the ice for 2 of the 3 Whitecap tallies. Translation: +2. Boulier's GWG came on a shot from the blue line, right up middle. Now I've seen harder shots in my time. But the placement was smart & precise, just inside the right post, about a foot off the ice. A triumph of accuracy.
#2 Star: Andrea Braendli, Buckeyes
Andrea turned away 50 shots from world class shooters. Her rebound control was excellent. At 3:18 of the Overtime, she fell one save short. But Braendli certainly made the NWHL Pros work hard for their victory. An outstanding performance.
#1 Star: Hannah Brandt, Whitecaps
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. Who's The Most Skillful Of Them All? Today's answer would be Hannah Brandt. Constantly play-making and shooting with laser sharp accuracy, Hannah bagged two goals & an assist. Brandt also matched Coyne's 12 Shot, +3 Production. The Whitecaps top line is mighty impressive. Hannah is the spark plug.

The proceedings took an intriguing turn as word spread that Kendall Coyne Schofield was not available for the rematch. It fell on Sadie to pick most of Kendall's minutes on the first line. Lundquist performed quite well, earning an assist on the GWG. She also closed out the proceedings with an empty-netter. Receiving a pass off the wall from Hannah Brandt, Sadie purposefully skated down the left wing, then put on the finishing touch.

It was great to see the Buckeyes' back-up keeper get minutes. Lynsey acquitted herself admirably in 2 periods of play, making 27 saves and surrendering only 1 goal. It was especially gratifying to witness the enthusiastic, vocal support Wallace got from her teammates.
#3 Star: (tie)Elise Riemenschneider, Buckeyes and Lisa Bruno, Buckeyes
The Buckeyes only dressed 4 'D' this weekend, and Elise & Lisa functioned as the top D Pair. Despite the formidable competition, they were calm and steady throughout the series; limiting opportunities and blocking shots. At -1 in both games, their stats may not leap off the page. But the Riemenschneider/Bruno duo was a vital part of the Buckeye team effort.

Emma got things going by slamming a rebound into the back of the Buckeye net. All five Whitecap skaters directly participated in the play. Haylea Schmid & Meaghan Pezon won the puck battle along the right wing boards. Winny Brodt Brown smartly fed the puck to Amanda Boulier at the right point. Amanda put a challenging shot on net. Goalie Andrea Braendli made the initial stop. But as Stauber pressed in toward the net from the left point, the puck wound up in her wheelhouse. Emma made no mistake.

Once again, a friendly exhibition. Once again, the Whitecaps prevailed in a closely contested match. Both sides benefited. The Buckeyes got to test themselves against top notch competition, including some Team USA alums. The Whitecaps got to spread the NWHL Gospel in another market. After the game, players from both teams mingled with the fans and participated in an autograph session. It was a tough weekend for the Bucks, but there is no shame whatsoever in losing to a professional team with three players who just won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Whitecaps are a highly skilled team and it was easy to see why they are sporting a 7-3 record and tied for first place with the Boston Pride in the NWHL. I need to say this, too, major props to the Whitecaps for coming down here to play on their own dime in the middle of their season, and also for signing some autographs after the game. Lee Stecklein spent quite a bit of time talking to a youth team that had made the trek to the game. Great group of young ladies, the Whitecaps. Looking forward to seeing Lauren Boyle playing for them in the future.
Today's game was a little different than yesterday's in that it was the Whitecaps who took the early lead and never looked back. Minnesota scored goals in each period to win this one 3-1. Emma Stauber got the Whitecaps on the board in the first period and they led 1-0 at the first intermission. In the second period, it was Amy Menke scoring for Minnesota to make the score 2-0. Both of Minnesota's goals were even strength. The Buckeyes' Maddy Field scored a power play goal in the second to bring Ohio State to within 2-1, but that was as close as the Bucks would get. Sadie Lundquist would seal the deal with an empty-netter with :59 to go in the game. The encouraging thing from today's game was Ohio State was able to generate quite a bit more offense than they did yesterday when they were outshot 53-21. Today's SOG were closer at 45-33 in favor of the Whitecaps. Normal Buckeye starter Andrea Braendli stopped 15 of the 16 shots she faced in the first period. In the second period, Lynsey Wallace relieved Braendli and was strong in net, stopping 27 of the 28 shots she faced. Another solid takeaway for Ohio State from this series ... we have three solid goaltenders that Coach Muzerall can go to in Andrea Braendli, Amanda Zeglen, and Lynsey Wallace! Not to be outdone, Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille stopped 32 of the 33 shots she faced.
Both teams will return to their respective leagues next weekend. The Whitecaps will head east for games against Boston and Connecticut on 1/12-1/13. The Buckeyes will welcome in #1-ranked Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday 1/11-1/12.

Obviously the talent OSU faced over the weekend was a step up from most. I think playing close games against a team of that level can only make OSU better. The loses my hurt but they will pay dividends.
One thing that is a positive for the pro side. Previously it was a bit easier to beat the Whitecaps. Hold on tight at the start, try to stifle their offence and to run them around as much as possible. Then in the third period open it up, the Whitecaps would be gassed because they couldn't condition like they should. 3rd period comebacks are a sign they are getting more gym and ice time

These certainly aren't the Whitecaps of previous years, and as I said in my post, there is certainly no shame in us losing to them. They are very talented, great skaters, highly skilled, and it's not just the three Olympians. It's easy to see why they are in first place in the NWHL.
