Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Well, Pgb, I thought this year we would be free of losing kids to their National Teams. I think I am going to end up being wrong on that, and it doesn't surprise me because she showed some flashes of greatness last season as a freshman! Julie McKinnon is making her presence felt at Canada's National Women’s Development Team selection camp (U22).

13 of these players will be combined with the 27 who are already centralized in Calgary for a three-game series next week. Hockey season and the Olympics will be here before we know it! I hate to lose kids to their National Teams in the middle of the season, but it goes with the territory when you recruit great players, and I wouldn't trade our kids for anyone's! Based on what I have read, some of the girls are already here in Columbus, or are making their way here as we speak. I'm excited for this season. We have a great group of girls coming back, and I cannot wait to see what the freshmen bring to the table. I fully expect Coach Nate and the girls to take another step forward in building this program. :)

It's great to hear that Julia is doing so well! But as for losing her for all or part of next season, I'm not sure how great the risk really is. It sounds like she has a strong chance to be part of the group of 13 playing next week. But there's a question as to how many of those 13 players have a realistic shot at staying on in Calgary for the full year. With a group of 27 in place, there's already a painful round of cuts needed prior to Sochi. For one of the U-22s to displace one of the 27, or to inflate the centralized roster even further, I would think there would have to be a serious wow factor.

On the other hand, if we're talking about Julia missing a series or two for tournaments, that seems more likely. Have to admit I don't know the particulars at the Development Team level, especially when there are potential Olympic complications.

Still seems strange for the new year at OSU to be getting under way in mid-August; but of course with the semester system that's the case. The teeming masses are moving into the dorms as we speak!

It's funny, I was helping a buddy move today. He mentioned that he thought about going to Target to get a couple things. He was told to unequivocally to avoid the Target on Olentangy River Road since today was moving day. Guess that Target is a zoo on moving day! As for Julia, I was thinking the same thing. I don't think she is going to unseat anyone and go to the Olympics, but I could see her possibly being picked for one of the tournament teams like the Four Nations. She would only be gone for a weekend or two if that happens.

I went to a movie at Lennox Saturday night; conditions at the Center were pretty much normal. I'm guessing the advice on Target was nevertheless correct, although sometimes such information spreads so well it actually prevents the problem. As an example, think evening rush hour on the day before a holiday weekend. People are so desperate to avoid the terrible traffic at 5:00, everyone tries to "beat the crowd." Result? A terrible jam mid-afternoon and manageable conditions at 5:00.

Columbus: Proud Home of the Herd Ethic. The trick is predicting the behavior of the herd in advance.;)

IIRC, the Canadian Development Team has often played European competition right after New Year's. Should that be the case this season, I suppose it could affect her availability for the Penn State series on the first weekend in January.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Based on info from the Team Canada thread, Julia was not one of the 13 players selected to play next week with Canada's centralized players. So I guess we'll have to settle for "making her presence felt." :o

Presumably the U-22 New Years tournament remains a possibility...

Julia will "make her presense felt" for the Ohio State Buckeyes for now! Five weeks and four days until the scrimmage vs Toronto Aeros! :)

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Pgb, I found out I am not going to be at the scrimmage on 9/28 (yes, BG football home game), so I am not going to be at a game until 10/12 (WOOF). What I was thinking, though, is, I wonder if it would be a good idea to try and move the scrimmage to one of the Chillers since OSU football has a home game that day. The men had an exhibition game at one of the Chillers a couple seasons ago. The thing I am thinking about is parking for the game. We went to a game last season or the season before where there was a home football game and the parking lot attendants weren't even aware that there was a women's hockey game. We were lucky to get into that lot next to the OSU Ice Rink. Anyway, sucks that I am going to miss the exhibition game and a trip to Erie for the game against Mercyhurst, but I will be looking very forward to the home opener on 10/11 vs St. Cloud.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Not a bad thought at all. I'm guessing, though, that they're locked into the current schedule at the Ice Rink.

As a preliminary matter, consider that the 2:00 PM face-off seems designed to accommodate the Aeros. Starting at that time means they can get back to Toronto to sleep Saturday night. Not sure when they're arriving, but that feels inflexible too. If the Aeros had more flexibility, I'd think the game would simply be moved to Friday evening or Sunday afternoon.

To answer your main point directly, having a game off-campus creates some logistical difficulties for the team, as well as some additional expense. Again just guessing, but I imagine the calculation was that since it's "only" the exhibition game, the fans should take one for the team. Translation: Fans without University permits will have to pay for Football Parking, whether they're staying for Football or not. That does stink for those affected. At the same time, there is a potential upside: Perhaps some of the tailgating crowd will wander in and watch some of the hockey game. Pre-Schott, the Men's team sometimes staged a Scarlet & Gray game on a Football Saturday, and usually got a small positive response.

Finally, note that the Men's & Women's teams are situated somewhat differently on this question. For the Women, the Ice Rink is home. Getting to the building will be inconvenient; but after that it's just the normal set-up. When the Men can't use the Schott, going to either the Ice Rink or one of the Chillers creates logistical difficulties, particularly with the locker room. Granted, it's not a 100% wash. But if there's a reason to get off campus, doing so is probably more tempting for the Men's team than the Women's.

Good points, and it would be cool if some of the tailgating crowd wandered into the ice rink to check out our women's hockey team. Might gain some new fans!

The Aeros are playing RIT at 5:00 PM on Friday and are presumably making the 6+ hour drive from Rochester to Columbus immediately after the game. Can't quite figure out who on the Aeros thought that this was a good game combo to set up.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

That is indeed an ambitious schedule, but I wouldn't second guess it too harshly. The opportunities for these cross-border match-ups are somewhat limited. Perhaps after putting lines in the water, they wound up with two opponents they really wanted, and therefore decided to "do whatever it takes" to make it happen.

Here's to hoping the Aeros have a safe, problem-free trip.

That is one heck of a road trip! I sincerely hope they have a nice time and accomplish all their objectives. They will want to take off right after the game. Otherwise they will get stuck dealing with football traffic as OSU has a big night game vs Wisconsin on 9/28.

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

I believe the Aeros will be attending the football game. After that they will be back on the bus heading to RMU for a Sunday matchup.

Wow, good for them. I am sure they will have a great time at the football game.

Tickets for game yanked. Less than a month before game, but after travel arrangements already made. Not cool. I would be finding a school closer to home to play. Not sure coach will be impressing any new recruits from that team.

That's a shame, but I sincerely doubt if it was Coach Handrahan's decision to take those tickets away. Last time I checked, he doesn't oversee the OSU ticket office. Thankfully for us Buckeye fans, I don't think our recruits base their decisions to come here or not on "whether they got to attend a football game."

Re: Ohio State Buckeyes 2013-14

Oh, you can be assured that we offer a very full menu of majors here at The Ohio State University. Now whether Spoon or Tessa actually majored in Music or Dance, that's entirely separate question.;)

Dug out a copy of the 2005-06 Media Guide, and found that Tessa was a Speech Pathology major. And yet music is in her blood. Quoting from the guide:
Uncle Tim Bonhomme plays keyboard for The Beach Boys... Uncle Alan Bonhomme plays guitar on some of Dwight Yoakum's albums and has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Not sure if I can offer any insight on the source of Natalie's musical mojo. Will post again if I can find anything.

EDIT: She majored in Food Science and Nutrition. Guess her musical ability is "self-taught." :)

Great find, there, Blackbeard! I was looking through this thread. With big wins already at Mercyhurst and North Dakota, that loss in exhibition vs the Toronto Aeros seems like it was months ago! Pgb, we are doing something we have not done yet ... we are following the team on the road! Heading to Madison for next weekend's games! Cannot wait to get there and cheer the girls on!
