Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

I am sure there will be a little fatigue, not to mention we will be down a d-man after the stupid hit from behind. This is what happens when you don't put a winning hockey program on the ice and finish 3rd or lower in the BIG Ten ... you have to play three games in a row to win it. Having said that, I think we have a shot at pulling it off tonight, having played the Gophers to three OT games and a 1-goal game.

He didnt get DQ just misconduct so unless the big ten suspends him he will be available to play

I was going to ask if YOUR guys are tired given how they played & lost at home to the Badgers last Friday.
Perhaps we're peaking and you're not?
I think we're due against you and if we can play like last night minus the penalties I like our chances.

Yes, both broadcast and boxscore indicate misconduct, not DQ.

In addition to the conference, the coaching staff could also decide to sit him. But I've heard nothing of the kind. Assume he'll be in the line-up unless you hear something specific to the contrary.

As a quip, that's certainly fair game.

But based on 2014, I don't think it makes much difference for tonight's game. On the vast majority of weekends, two games are played on a back-to-back basis. Familiar workload.

However, should the Buckeyes pull the upset and make it to Saturday, it's an issue. Again, 2014 showed us what that looked like.

For the stars to align from a Buckeye point of view, Penn State also pulls the upset. That way both Saturday teams would be on Game 3. Not prepared to predict either upset, but it's an appealing scenario.:)

Well, at least on the ice. In the stands, not so much.

Very tough to beat a team 5 times which is what both Michigan and Minnesota are trying to do today.

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

OK, my thing for luck tonight is I'm going to wear the same Ohio State Hockey shirt I had on last night when we won.
Anybody else do anything for extra luck? And please don't tell me anything like you haven't changed your underwear since our win last weekend!

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

Not doing anything for luck tonight. I figure if we are going to win, we will win regardless of what I am wearing. Did anyone else notice that Wisconsin is firing Mike Eaves? It's interesting how different programs react to losing. Wisconsin just won the league two seasons ago. Now, two losing seasons later, Eaves is out of a job. I'll be surprised if Anastos isn't out at Michigan State soon. That's another program that cares about putting a winning program on the ice. Then, at the other end of the spectrum, we've had two losing seasons in a row and we have people talking about Rohlik getting three more seasons (possibly more than that if Smith gives him an extension). Anyway, back to the game, we are doing well through the first two periods although I am concerned about all the missed opportunities to get a couple more goals. We're not going to shut out Minnesota, so if we are serious about winning this game tonight, we had better start burying some of these scoring chances. This game is making me nervous. I just saw a replay of the call that got Dakota Joshua tossed. I am not sure about the call, but I will say this ... that's what happens when you have a reputation for doing that game in and game out. Other teams can embellish against us and get that call because we have a reputation for making plays like that. We'll see if we can hang on in the third period. This is an elimination game for both teams.

Not that I disagree with you, but to be fair to our AD and to Rohlik, we're not Wisconsin or MSU. We never have been. Now I'm not saying we should be content with that, but I don't think the meltdown at Wisco and the situation here are really comparable. Eaves took a perennially competitive team (which he can also take credit for) and turned it into a doormat which won 4 games last year and a resounding 8 this year. Rohlik took an average/below average team and, well, kept it an average/below average team. We're not improving, and we shouldn't be happy about it, but we're not melting down like Wisco and MSU either. OSU being OSU, I'm afraid that a meltdown is probably what it would take for the AD to make a change.

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

Well at least we made it a game. Really would've loved to make a run but I'm not surprised by tonight. Minnesota has just had our number when its counted all year. Now that our offseason is here, anybody have any info on recruiting? Any reason to be optimistic for next year? Is Schilkey definitely coming back?

Tanner Laczynski & Sam McCormik are 2 forwards that I know of that look to be playing good in the USHL. Looks like a good goalie and Paul Pooley's nephew is coming in next season. With 13 freshmen this season, a majority of which stepped up...have every reason to be optimistic about 2016-2017. Go Bucks!

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

I just wonder when will we ever get a break from bad officiating?
It looked pretty brutal when Miller went into the boards and only a 2 minute minor. Joshua put the Minnesota kid in the boards at a glancing angle and 5 minutes and ejection?
Rohlik was right to be livid and disgusted with the calls. He was really ripping into those refs prior to the start of the 3rd!

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

Well last night was just about how this year went against the gophers. For 2 periods they neutralized the speed and kept them to the outside but just couldnt get past that first 5 minutes of the third period. As far as the 5 minute on Joshua i didnt think either hit deserved the 5 minute penalty. You could see him trying to slow up and he didnt even go through him. The difference was imo his hit was on the lower back and the gopher hit was higher near the shoulder but again i dont think either hit deserved the 5. That penalty was big because it took them out of what they wanted to do and made the guys even more tired in the 3rd playing more minutes than expected

This year was disappointing as a whole but good things were done they battled back from a brutal non conference schedule and a 0-7 start they were 3-11 at Christmas time. Teams fold after a start like that but this team didnt they went to Florida and beat 1 team that will be playing next weekend and another that has a chance. They came into the Big Ten and sure didnt finish as high as we would have liked them to but this will be a learning experience for the guys coming back next year. They went 14-11-3 after that 0-7 start and played the conference champs to 5 really close games again no consolation but something to bulid on for next year. With the guys coming back next year i expect a top 2 finish in this league and a ncaa tournament spot. They must fix the undisciplined penalties that plagued them all year long the 5 minute game misconduct penalties kill you not just for the 5 minutes that the penalty is served but it takes you out of your lines and makes guys play more minutes than needed. October will be here before you know it have a good summer talk to everyone later.

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

I'm kind of wondering if we'll see Lampasso back next season.
The reason I say this is I know the young man well enough that he doesn't take being a healthy scratch well. Some people when confronted with you're not giving the coach what he wants you work harder and earn your spot back in the lineup. Others get sour grapes about it and leave the program and it's happened before.
Christian skates hard & fast on the ice but objectively speaking he gives more individual effort than team effort and that's not always a bad thing if you're a goal scorer and he's not.
He takes good shots but his accuracy to hit the corners has not been good. He either needs to start scoring goals or quit taking shots and use his speed with the puck to draw off the defense and be the team player and pass to someone open who can score.
Anyone else see this the way I do?

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

That'd be a shame if Lampasso left. Obviously he needs to score more but his speed makes him exciting to watch. Ronnie Hein looks good in the USHL too, but I thought he was going to Ferris State?

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

I just wanted to clarify I have not heard anything about Lampasso leaving! I was speaking from the viewpoint that he was not happy being scratched but what player isn't? It's speculation on my part on how it's sitting with him. If he can get the shot placement where it needs to be consistently he would be a strong presence on whatever line he's placed in because he does have that element of speed. We need two speedsters on the same line so when they break up ice and one takes the shot if there's a rebound the other is in position to tap it in. Michigan used to use that with great effect.

I agree with your assessment of Lampasso. I really like his speed, but he needs to put pucks in the net when he has the opportunity. Hopefully, he works on shooting in the offseason. I still think this team has the talent to get to the NCAA Tournament next year, but if they are going to get there, they need to learn to play 60-minute games every night out. They also need to be more disciplined in regard to penalties. I sincerely hope the program starts to move forward now with a solid freshman class about to be sophomores. I am sure everyone is sick of my posts questioning whether or not we have the right guy leading the program.

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

I agree BUT we were hit with a LOT of bad calls and warrantless ejections and what can you do about that? Either you hit in hockey or the other team runs over you.

I don't normally like to complain about calls or use that as an excuse, but I did notice that throughout the season. We would get hit with 5-minute majors or 10-minute DQ's or game misconducts. When the other teams made the same hits on our kids, they just got 2-minute minors a vast majority of the time. Penalties should be called the same, regardless of the name on the front of the sweater. It is what it is, I guess. I see the same thing happen at the OSU women's games. Teams will take dives against us and get our kids kicked out of games, then one of our kids gets boarded from behind and it's a 2-minute minor. Last year some girl from UND rammed our player's head into a stanchion, concussing her, and she got a 2-minute minor on what was an obvious dirty play. So, yeah, like I said, I don't normally complain about calls, but clearly, BIG Ten and WCHA refs call games based on the name on the sweater. I've seen it for years with the WCHA women, and now with BIG Ten men. It didn't seem to be as big of a problem in the old CCHA where we were a charter member, but you can see it clearly these days in the BIG Ten or with our women's team in the WCHA. It's really bad in the WCHA. If you think it's bad on the men's side, come to a women's game vs Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, or Minnesota-Duluth. I don't even get that mad any more because I know before those games even start that the other teams are going to get most (if not all) of the calls.

Re: Ohio State 2015-2016 Season

If the coaches feel that too many calls were wrong they have a recourse. There's a video guy who has nothing left to do who can prove it one way or the other by looking at videos. If they have a case they can submit it to the B1G and let them look at it. If they don't then it's just *****ing.

Now we need someone to kidnap Healey, Brevig and Schilkey to make certain that no pro team can convince them to forgo their senior leave.
