That smart phone comment was kinda an apples to oranges comparison. I agree, if you only want to make phone calls, you don't need an iPhone. Case in point, my mom. She can barely figure out how to make phone calls as it is, start throwing other stuff on, and it could get bad, quick.
But making phone calls and gaming are not a 1:1 comparison. There isn't really a significant difference between making a call on a smart phone or a 6 year old brick. One you press buttons, one you tap a screen, that's really about it. And, you can call whatever phone numbers you want, regardless of what phone you have. The XB1 has improvements that would actually affect the quality of gaming, and make it worth upgrading for that alone, and there's also new games that can't be played on an older system. The extra stuff should be besides the point when it comes to gaming. Use them if you can and want, otherwise, don't.
If it really is just a DRM issue, I'd imagine they could come up with some simpler fixes if they really wanted. Require the disc be in the tray for offline gaming! Worked fine on the 360.
