Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I haven't noticed any issues with PSN so I don't see what the hub bub is about.

The Sheshan course on TW12 can die in a fire though. No matter how well I play, I can't seem to get better than a -3 in a round there. Usually I just end up Even. Wind is consistently 13-20 MPH, and the pins are always on an f'ing hill.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Sorry not supporting them on this. Is it wrong to go after a guy in such way? Yes. But don't let the rest of us suffer because you feel the need to "cure" an injustice which is basically what they've done by going after the PSN. Companies don't like being stolen from, which is what GeoHotz and the like are supporting whether they mean it or not, and when they do everybody suffers. Online passes? DRM? It's only gonna get worse.
Software companies have used any anecdotal evidence to increase "security" since forever. Why do you think you license software and not buy? Would you be fine with a car manufacturer coming to your garage and putting in a new computer that limits your speed, when you can drive, who can drive? I believe some companies like Gamestop have had lawsuits filed against them because software companies have tried to say you can't resell our product because it doesn't belong to you. Autocad went after some guy who was selling their program on ebay because he didn't own it. He was just borrowing it from them.

It's not the potential money that's being stolen from them (even though if you look at the numbers the gaming industry continues to make money hand over fist as a whole) it's the control they want over their user base.

And by that same logic torrent technology should be illegal because it is used to share things illegally, except companies like blizzard and many others use it as a means to keep costs down when providing large files to their users. VCR's, disc burners, etc all need to go because even though there are plenty of legitimate reasons to use one, someone might use them for an illegal activity.

Actually car companies already put in CPUs that stop cars from performing at their highest levels/fastest speeds. Thats why the small print in commercials say things like "with safety features removed" when talking about HP.

It's more that they would be adding that or putting stipulations on what parts you could replace or what things you could change to the vehicle, after you had already purchased it.

In some ways the system is almost created to make anyone a criminal.

That's all fine and dandy, but there's no reason to treat a 2nd hand copy of Mass Effect 2 differently than a 2nd hand copy of War and Peace. The whole "licensing" crap is a way to do an end-around on the First Sale Doctrine of copyright law; and my guess is in most commercial circumstances (such as joe blow buying a copy of windows at best buy) it wouldn't hold up when pressed (corporate deals between microsoft/ibm and, say, walmart, are a different matter).

Copyright infringement is bad, but the solutions are often worse than the problem.

And allow them to make cheap, incremental horsepower increases from year to year.

Ok I believe I've been misunderstood here. I'm not saying I agree with Sony on this. My point was that Anonymous' actions were likely to give companies an excuse to have tighter security measures, thus making things worse for all of us. If Anonymous wanted to make lasting change they could've organized a money drive for GeoHotz's legal fund. Instead they acted like donkeys and now they'll end up (rightfully) in jail and everybody else loses.

Companies do what they can to protect their assets, you would do the same if you were in that situation. Is it wrong what some of these companies do? Yeah but the DMCA allows them to whether we like or not it seems. That's why I don't like people like Anonymous going after Sony and effecting all of us consumers when instead their efforts should be going after changing the laws and legal decisions.

I'm not saying a video game should be treated any differently than a book. You should be able to sell your physical copy of Mass Effect as you see fit. But you shouldn't be able to pull the game off the disc and sell the ROM or give it away on a torrent to be played on a jailbroken 360. Now should the torrent site be sued for allowing that kind of behavior? No, it's how the users choose to use it not what the creators of the site set up.

Not to mention that to modify any of the settings can make your car illegal to drive of the street. Heck in California modifying your air intake can get your car impounded. It's very common for cars these days to have settings that limit performance, I'd say that 90-95% of cars, racing and street legal, have limitations imposed. For example the Nissan GT-R is limited to 180 km/h in Japan unless the GPS detects you are on racetrack.

I don't have TW12 yet but it was a pain on TW11 too.

FIFA online stuff was slow last night, though I'm not sure whether that's because of PSN or EA.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Just saw on Gizmodo that Nintendo has a successor in the works for the Wii.

Thought I'd post it here. Also wanted to be the first to say . . . please, please let it be called the SuperWii. That's all.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Some more amazing deals this weekend.

Rockstar games up to 75% off. Including a $7.49 pack of GTA 1, 2, 3, VC and SA

Was playing GT5 on the PS3 last night and there was a monster update (buddy and I watched a movie, while updating and the update still wasn't finished; we think it's the one that Twitch had to go through, for whatever reason).

Anyway, after playing a couple games on it (and comparing to the games I've played on the Wii), I'm set on buying a PS3, since I also need a new DVD player and would like the BluRay option, even if I may not use it. Best Buy has a pack that has the 320GB console w/Move add-on thing for $350. The 160GB (no add-on) is $300. Obviously the 320GB is the way to go, my question is how many Move games have been made, is Move going to be like the Running Pad thingy that NES had back in the day (a flash in the pan, but in the long-term it is worthless)?

Any info is appreciated.

The Move is basically like the Wii but a lot more involved, the motions have to be more precise. I know Tiger Woods uses the Move (which is pretty fun to use) as do some of the Sony shooters like Killzone 3 and SOCOM 4. LittleBigPlanet 2 comes with Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves which uses the Move as a puzzle game type thing. I like to use it but then again I use it with my wife and daughter. It's hard to see if it'll get any support outside of Sony though.

Not that I've researched (since I figure the bigger GB is worth the cost anyway), but I'd be into the simpler games like a Big Buck Hunter-style game, or golf (you mentioned Tiger Woods). Something simple and fun. I do admit, I loved the Wii Archery (sports package?) and the Wii bowling. Just wondering if the Move will have those same options.

I believe the package you're talking about comes with Sports Champions, a game that is right your alley. It has Archery (that will kill your arm to do), disc golf, table tennis, bocce, things like that, simple and fun. From what you say it would definitely be for you.

I wouldn't call TW Golf simple. They are going more towards actual golf sim nowadays. So it might actually be frustrating to play with the Move controller.

They really are going for realism! :D

MLB 11: The Show also supports the Move device. I'm not sold on it yet; will see if another generation of games comes out that are geared for it or if it's just a flash in the pan.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Oh and DeathSpank T.O.V. is pretty fun to play. I got it on discount from XBL a couple weeks ago, but never got around to playing it until recently.

I will probably get the original at some point as well.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Played through Braid this weekend. Really, really liked that one, even though it's fairly short. Thinking about giving the speed runs a try, but I imagine they would drive me insane.

Pre-ordered Portal 2, can't wait for that!

Picked up some pre-owned games at Gamestop last weekend. Started Dragon Age: Origins last weekend, and have Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition and Assassin's Creed 2 waiting to be played.
