Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Just picked up MLB 11. It comes with a free 30-day trial of MLB.TV (From GS at least). So that's nice if you are on the fence about paying for it.

Also got the Signature Ed. of Dragon Age II. Comes with a code for sword and shield on the receipt. Not sure what else is in the package.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So realism in MLB 11.

Bottom of the 1st inning of an exhibition game (White Sox @ Twins) just to see how the presentation is, and they are already talking about the Twins losing 12 straight playoff games. All to the Yankees. :(

Oh and Casilla grounded out immediately. So they really took every detail. ;)

ETA: Some noticeable nit picks (already).
- Balls pitched in the dirt will stay on screen until after a ball has already been thrown back to the pitcher. Kind of quirky.
- Duplicate fans in the stands is understandable, but they shouldn't only be 1 seat apart. Makes it pretty obvious. Same clothes, animations, timing, etc.
- Already have seen duplicate player animations for ground outs to 2nd base. Not sure if that is supposed to be a signature move, but twice in 2 fielding chances for one player seems like a lot.
- Balls thrown back to the pitcher from infielders (like on a K) seem to be well above where the glove/arm is positioned. Makes it look funny when the ball disappears as if the glove caught it.

There's more than that. It's pretty good so far. Took a little bit to get going but now I'm set. Played a rogue first. Rogue was my favorite in Origins.

HR Derby with Pure Analog swing and no visual aids took a bit to get used to, but now it feels pretty natural to hit that way. Hitting a HR feels good, thats for sure. 17 in a round and 7 in a row are my records so far.

Yeah I just started it about an hour ago. Started as a warrior and imported my DAO save as the history.

That Ogre during the cut scene as you are running to the Wilds just got me. We were both down to 1 hit left and he knicked me for the kill. So that made a good stopping point as I had just saved prior to that.

My hard drive blew up so I lost all my DAO saves from before. Kind of bummed about that, but oh well. That Ogre got me the first time too. Got him the second time. The controls are a little different and took some getting used to.

I've probably already screwed up my skill tree, so I can see a restart in my future.

I usually always have to restart once I learn how to play the game and figure out what I want for skills. Generally I get about maybe 1/2 way through and then I restart and play the way I would have wanted to in the first place.

Carver is dressed like a twit and acts like a twit. The game also seems to start out rather slow. Up to the ogre battle just seemed blah to me. I want quests from the start, not an hour of pre-scripted crap. After the ogre battle though the game picked up and it's awesome.

Crap, why did I have to discover FUT's web app? Now I'm buying and selling cards while I'm at work too.

On the bright side, just picked up Heath Pearce for 1000 coins. He seems to often go for 3x that because people just try to find the fastest players and because there are so few good American left backs. (I think Pearce and Todd Dunivant are the only silver ones, and there are no golds. Is Jonathan Bornstein in FUT? In the standard side of the game he's got the same overall rating as Pearce but I don't think I've ever seen his card in FUT.)

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Wow, hitting with pure analog in MLB 11 makes me want to throw my controller at someone. I hope this is just a learning curve. I don't want to have to turn on a bunch of assists or go back to last years hitting controls just to play.

Pitching however is pretty intuitive with pure analog.

My first RttS player got drafted by the Mets and is in Binghamton (AA). Nice since the Mets or Twins would have been the two teams I would have selected to start with anyways.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Yeah, the first few games are ridiculously hard with the PA controls. I've started to get the hang of it. I'm batting around .275 right now in AA in my first 20 or so games. I can slap the ball around for bases and I've knocked in quite a few RBIs but HRs are still a bit elusive as I've only hit one.

Is it wrong to sign up for Facebook just to get free in-game content for DAII and then cancel the account? Because I am considering it.

It's wrong that they're making you have a facebook account to get extra content.

In other news, despite claiming I was beyond MMO's - I've started playing Rift. It's actually pretty freaking fun, and so far I haven't come across any issues playing it only casually (~hour/day or less). Of course I have yet to hit the first raiding instance, so we'll see how it goes once I get that far.

True, but I can understand why they do it. It's a brand and advertising partnership. Plus I am one of only about 4 people who don't have Facebook.

I've got a friend at GS on the lookout for an extra Dead Space 2 code for DAII as well. Since I will never buy that game.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Personally, I'd rather get free content because I have a Facebook account than have to pay for it, but obviously that opinion is skewed by the fact that I already have Facebook anyway.

Or they could just give you free content for having bought the freaking game. I don't mind the thing where you get a code with the game to download some extra goodies, thereby encouraging new game purchases over the secondary market. Facebook/twitter requirements are just asinine, however.

I've had a facebook account dating back to when it first expanded beyond Harvard. Doesn't mean I want to be forced to actually use it for anything.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

You don't need any of the content to play the game. It's just extra junk and probably not stuff you're going to use after playing for a while anyway.

Oh sure, I completely agree with you here, I was saying upthread that "extra" content annoys me; if you bought the game then you should get the whole game, not the whole game minus some portion that the developer decided to hold back and charge extra for at a later date.
