Re: Official Oswego State 2014-2015 Thread...LETS FINISH THE JOB!!!!!
A win is a win, and I'll take it. Great performance from Z in my opinion.
Let's see where this puts us. Oswego is now guaranteed at least the #2 spot in the SUNYAC playoffs, and is therefore guaranteed at least one home playoff game and a first round bye. Fantastic. Now comes the battle for first. For the below, I'm going to assume that Plattsburgh will beat Cortland and that Oswego will beat Potsdam, which is really the most likely scenario.
A win over Geneseo would bring us to the Plattsburgh game ahead in the standings by one point, meaning if Oswego and Platty tie, the regular season title would go to us since we'd still be ahead by one point. But tying to Geneseo would mean the exact same thing. If we tied Genny and Platty too, we would have the same number of points as Plattsburgh, but still win the tiebreaker since we'd own the 1-0-1 record against them for the season.
So basically in this Geneseo game, we need at least a tie. If we can tie, all we need is at least a tie against Plattsburgh. If we lose to Genny though, then nothing but beating Plattsburgh will get us the title. Tiebreaker would go to Plattsburgh. I imagine there will be more than one Cardinals fan rooting for Genny tomorrow night.
Now here's a strange scenario. Say we lose to Plattsburgh, so they go up to 26 points, but then they falter against Cortland and land a tie somehow, thus ending the season with 27 points. We could end the season beating Genny and Potsdam and tie at 27 points. Except the H2H tiebreaker would be 1-1, so that wouldn't work. We would then go to the second category which is conference wins. Both teams would have 13, in fact identical records of 13-2-1. The next tiebreaker would be goal differential against each other in conference play. So if Plattsburgh beats Oswego next week by exactly 2 goals, then that would be a tie too. Then we would move onto the next tiebreaker. Which would be goal differential in all SUNYAC games. Oswego right now has a +43, while Plattsburgh has a +42. Yeah, it's that close. So let's say Oswego beats Genny by one goal, now we're 43. We beat Potsdam by 3 goals, yay! now we're at 46. Except we lost to Plattsburgh by exactly two goals, lowering our rating down to +44, and raising Plattsburgh to +44. Thus another tie. The tiebreaker after that is a coin flip.
So to summarize, if Oswego beats Geneseo and Potsdam by a combined margin of exactly 4 goals, loses to Plattsburgh by exactly 2 goals, and then Plattsburgh ties Cortland, the SUNYAC regular season title would be decided by coin flip. Is this likely? Of course not. Especially the part about Plattsburgh not beating Cortland. But anything is possible.
