Gosek didn't sound like he was ready to commit to either goalie during his post-game interview. Says he needs to see more consistency from Zawadski in practice for him to become an every-night goalie. I think for now, just rotate them. Opposing teams won't know who to prepare for ahead of time, not that there is enough on either goalie to build a game plan around. I would imagine Gilbert will start against Cortland.

Of course we both know that shots on goal don't tell the whole story of a game, but they do provide an interesting peak into what's actually going on during games. The top 5 best offenses last season had 36, 37, 34, 37, and 37 shots on goal per game respectively. Teams that consistently got above 30 shots on goal were successful offensive teams last year. The only exception I saw last year was perhaps Norwich, which only managed about 30 shots on goal per game, but limited their opponents to only 18 shots on goal per game. Thus their goalies' GAA was outstanding, yet their save pctg were average-slightly above average.

Oswego is a team that relies more heavily on their goalies, so getting some consistency back there should be Oswego's #1 priority at this point. The forward lines will sort themselves out with experience and practice. I say go with the hot hand against Cortland and see if Zawadzki can build up some confidence. SNC won a national championship 2 years ago with a freshman goalie, so it's not always something to be afraid of. But keep Gilbert ready to go because you know he's hungry to get another chance to prove himself. As for Jasmin, we really just don't know enough about him. We don't know how he's doing in practice and we have little to no information about what kind of hockey he played before he got here. He's kind of a dark horse. I suspect he'll get at least a couple chances to play this season, especially if Oswego keeps up their unfortunately long tradition of having their goalies get injured.

I think losing the first game of the season was sort of a rude awakening for a lot of fans where a lot of expectations got lowered by a lot very quickly. You don't appreciate just how good your team is until you lose 75% of them. It'll only take a couple more losses before people start looking past this season into next season. I hope the new guys have a surprise or two up their sleeves. These guys are going to be a formidable force in the next few years. The question remains, however, as to whether they can pull themselves together enough this season to challenge for some hardware.

I suspect he'll get at least a couple chances to play this season, especially if Oswego keeps up their unfortunately long tradition of having their goalies get injured.

Really the injury prone Beckwith was the only real bad time they have had with goalies. Scott, Gajda, Lofberg, Antifonario etc. didn't really miss a lot of time with injuries. It just seems that way because Beckwith got sick or injured all four years he played and circumstances led to them only having one backup.

Having watched the Buffalo-Oswego game Saturday, I came away with a couple of observations. I think the Lakers look very much like last year's Plattsburgh team. Very young and talented. The problem with the Cards was they took a few tough one-goal losses early on and were busy digging themselves out of that hole during the second semester. By early February they were a force. But the damage was done and the 19-7 record was not good enough.

I think the same will hold true for this Laker team. Several of the freshman were also recruited by Plattsburgh and other top teams but opted for Oswego. So you know they are high-end players. But I think the talent is there for sure. If they can avoid the early losses (like Fredonia) and just pull out the W's...they will be there at the end.

Cramping was a real bad time too

Yeah Potter was a head case but at that time they had Beckwith, Gunn-Taylor and Hyk to step in if he had real problems. He never really had any cramps, it was all in his head. He only cramped up in his first start against Skidmore and the two Platty games, the real pressure games.

Toto the true Laker fan is not looking at wins this year but rather how the team grows and matures. I would say after 2 games most are very happy with the effort that has been put on the ice so far. Not every team is fortunate enough to have a season like the Cards did with all the new talent of last year. I would say most would be happy with 14-15 wins. You are correct that the Laker fans have been spoiled with the great success that Ed has coached the men to.

I would not at all be happy with 14-15 wins. More like 18+ wins. If they can win some ugly games early on by the time the offensive chemistry comes around they will be in good position to do just that. They have a lot of extremely winnable games on their schedule, they already let one slip away, I see no reason why they can't win 18 or so games.

As a Cardinal fan, I can say that last year's five 1 point losses and the tie were no where near as nice as a win, put knowing they were that close (with 11 freshmen & 8 sophomores) bode well for the future.

that seems like a fair comparison, and if we finish19-7 I would think it a pretty good season.It will take time to sort out the talent for sure,and those not dressing will have to step it up in practice,which in turn will make the team better.also we have yet to see our D1 dman from merrimack,bonner d1 trans didnt play sat night,I thought he had very good speed and hustle,and the rest of the d1guys need to step it up to help with this breaking in period,as well as the returners MUST be the leaders no questions asked,so far we cant ask anything more from the frshmen,its a long season,so relax and enjoy the ride....ps the cards also had some injuries last yr and still made a good season out of it with the move of Jensen to D helped out, lets hope we dont go down that injury bug road.

Being able to make it happen when it really counts matters. Yes I'm looking at their talent and development. But that's no reason to write off this season so early. Come playoff time, I expect to see our guys to be at least a thorn in the side of some of the older teams. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled off a couple upsets later in the season.

Rebuilding means you got to keep a class from start to finish, it also means that you might have to lower your expectations, when it comes to wins during rebuilding. Winning is what matters, but winning doesn’t always mean your team scores more points, as long as there is development and improvement in line or exceeding reasonable expectations than a loss can still be a win. A loss can still provide the knowledge and experience to improve for next time. A true fan, accepts reality, expects his team to perform at their best and true fan does not lament what is missing and doesn’t dwell on the negative, this is not to say they ignore the ugly, but they recognize that as long as there is a strong team effort to improve to the best, nothing is truly bad allowing the true fan to expound the positive.

You and I don't agree often Toto but on this one we do. The true fan of any team wants that team to win. The players and coaching staff wouldn't be happy with 14-15 wins so why should the fans. I'm not saying I expect them to be in Lewiston come march but 14 wins is a low number to shoot for when the team has never won less than 18 since Eddie took over. There will no doubt be some tough losses and it's not the end of the world but there is no reason why these guys can't do what Plattsburgh did last season. The expectations that should change for Oswego fans isn't the number of wins but rather how they come by them. For this season at least (the first half for sure) they will be winning and losing a lot of one goal games, we probably wont see many 9 or 10 goal games from them. They have generated a lot of shots in the first two games so the scoring might start coming along later but for now most games are gonna be battles rather than cakewalks that we saw a lot over the past eight seasons.

In their first two games they learned how not to win at this level, then turned around the next night and put those lessons to practice and got their first win out of the way. They matured an awful lot between those two games as far as doing the little things needed to win games. The passing and shooting needs to catch up and when it does they will be a force.

Very well said sir. I'm truly happy watching any Lakers game because I know those guys are trying their hardest and I'm honored to be able to call myself alumnus.
But yes, I always want them to win and always have hope that they will. I have never seen a laker's game in which I didn't think they could win.
