Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

You and I don't agree often Toto but on this one we do. The true fan of any team wants that team to win. The players and coaching staff wouldn't be happy with 14-15 wins so why should the fans. I'm not saying I expect them to be in Lewiston come march but 14 wins is a low number to shoot for when the team has never won less than 18 since Eddie took over.

A true fan likes a win, but wants what is best for the TEAM, any true Cardinal fan can tell you how they feel when Emery benches players - REGARDLESS of the impact on winning "a" game, but recognizing that winning comes in more forms than just the outcome of "a" game. A true fan would like every game to be a win - but doesn't set sights in a fixed number of wins- a true fan wants the title, but is happy with a sincere best effort.

That's the key, the difference between what you expect, what you hope, and what you actually think will happen. I expect an above .500 record, very likely above .600. I hope to see them win the SUNYAC championship and make another trip to the Frozen 4. I think they'll make it to the SUNYAC championship but lose to Platty in a close, competitive game.

But the key is that even if Oswego loses every single game left in the season, I'll still be tuning in November 1st 2014 to see them play again.

At last, the little dog said something that even I agree with. That is what a fan should be.

Right, I will still go to every home game and most road games whether they win or not.

I agree norm that watching a team grow and seeing their best effort is rewarding as a fan. I think their best effort makes them a really tough team to beat even with so many new faces. Friday night the players and staff will tell you was not their best effort, it was an extremely feeble effort and Saturday they showed how much better they really are. I'm just saying with the talent they have and the coaching staff they have, which includes video man Mike Gray and Mr. Sear's the goalie coach, the maturation process for them should be pretty quick.

I guess I just see more in this group of players than others do because if some people look at these guys and see a team that is only capable of 14 wins I guess I don't have that good of an eye for talent. I just don't feel like people are excited enough about what this group can do, even at the games a lot of folks seem real ho-hum like they didn't destroy either team so they will just be mediocre.

Fans come in all types, and there are those that can't find themselves getting excited unless Oswego blows out their opponent 10-0 every game. I think some people need a little more evidence that this is a very good team. It's tough for me because I see immense talent but then I see really really bad mistakes being made two or three times in a game, when those mistakes happened once or twice a season before. The talent is there. The power is there. The motivation is there. But is the focus? Is the coordination and teamwork and communication there? That'll end up being the difference between a .600 team this year and a .800 team.

Oswego has always made a lot of bad mistakes, but when you are scoring 5 or more goals a game then people tend to not notice.

Poor Toto, being a young pup, doesnt remember a time when the penalites piled up like cord wood some nights. Cost us some big games.
To that point, it wasn't long ago when Laker fan hoped and willed for a win and not just expect a win.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Toto and Laker 28 it is to bad that you my reply so badly. But for a long time I got to see 4 coaches get some great things out of players who may not have been the 4/5 star player that was recruited. That development of that player and teams is for me the success. If that coincides with many victories is a plus. Whether or not Coach C hasn't had a team with less that 18 wins/season that doesn't carry over the next season. Just how the great power house of Middlebury has come back to earth in recent years. I do hope that the Lakers does well but the reality of it is that they haven't proved anything yet. And no I am not writing off this year, I just have lower hopes this year.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I can remember going to games just hoping to see them score back when RIT and Fredonia were defensive monsters. The first game I attended was a 5-0 loss to Fredonia and I remember them getting demolished by RIT on several occasions. Once George Roll took over it started to swing back towards them being more competitive ending in a SUNYAC title and NCAA final appearance in 2003. Since Eddie has been at the helm they have become perennial contenders. Oswego fans now do expect to win games, some of them expect them to win by 5+, but that is pretty much the culture Eddie has created with his teams in his tenure. This group is going to need to be willed to victory some this season, at least early on, and I just hope the fans are up for that challenge.

And DIII fan, you have lower hopes, really? I know they wont win every game but I certainly hope they will and I don't know why any fan wouldn't hope for the same. I go to every game hoping to see the boys put their best effort onto the ice every night. I just feel that the best effort for the players on this roster will produce more success than some people want to give them credit for. I don't think they are national title contenders this year by any stretch and I am certainly not gonna be disappointed if they don't win any trophies.

cant keep up with this conversation, but bottom line, just being on these threads /boards has to make you a fan of some sort..........still curious y we didnt see Willis this weekend, anyone know y??? injury,or maybe not good enough to crack the top 6,he is a D1 trans from a pretty good school Merrimack???

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I would have to think he has some sort of injury as Eddie seems pretty high on him and expected him to be an impact player right away. Maybe he didn't practice well or something in the week leading up to the games. I figured Gertsakis, Rivait, King and Wills would be the top four with everyone else rotating in and out. Hart played really well on Saturday and Johnson turned it around after a pretty lackluster Friday and Scott also was solid all weekend. Raguseo was fair on Friday which leaves us with just Orser and Wills that haven't seen any real game action on defense.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Just posted my opening weekend recap for the men and women's teams here. I hope to have a little more opinion in each post as the season goes on and we get a better look and feel for the team (and as time allows with all this class work piling up!). For anyone who may not have seen, the women's hockey team looked impressive in their first two wins this past weekend as well. It wasn't against the strongest of competition, but the freshmen sure made an immediate impact and it was very evident the team will benefit from a full bench this year. Definitely a team to keep an eye on!

I had thought the same, those 4 dmen, and perhaps Scott who did play 11 games at D1 canisus, and the resst up for grabs..both johnson and rags are very good skating dmen, who like to move deep into the O zone { our forwards must realize this and cover for them },and must remember to play defense first, also rags got hit with 2 pens fri night as well.i hope Willis is not injured and we see him vs cortland??Orser I have no idea about didnt see much of him in the showcase.

Anyone use a Google Chromecast to watch Laker hockey on their TV?

Orser is a bit smaller in frame than some of the other Dmen coming into the program for this season. In the showcase he started a minor scrap with another player so I'm not so sure that didn't have something to do with him not seeing time yet.

They definitely looked a lot better early in the season than they have in the past. The freshman looked to be at least close to the same level as the seniors already which is a plus. Erika Truschke is a good little player and Ashley Lyman looks like a good one as well. The transfer on defense Monique Cornett is a real force on the blueline. They should have a pretty decent team, I don't know if they will compete with Plattsburgh or Elmira but they should be right near the top of the standings again. Taking care of business against Potsdam on the road this weekend would be a good start.

Agreed. They've come close to upsetting the Plattsburghs and Elmiras and RITs in the last few years, and if the incoming freshman continue to contribute as they did last weekend they may very well be able to pull one off this season. Will they finish above either in the standings, no. But as has been said here before about the any-given-night nature of postseason tournaments, it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable to think they may be able to pull of an upset in the ECAC West tournament. I have a feeling it will be fun to watch them over the course of the season. Certainly nice to see some growth on that side, it would be great for Oswego to one day have a women's hockey program that stands alongside the men's like there is at Plattsburgh, Norwich and Elmira.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

With Bridget Smith in net and some opportunistic scoring they could easily pull off an upset of one of the top two. With the let down against Neumann last year as motivation I like their chances of reaching the semi's at least and as you say, anything can happen from there. I just wish more people would support them, the games are not as fast paced and they don't have the national impact the men do but you will never hear anyone accusing them of not giving it everything they have every game.

And they actually did beat RIT 2-1 in 2011 thanks to Emi Williams. That was RIT's only loss until the were defeated by I believe Norwich in the National title game.
