Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I want to extend a congrats to all the members of the Lakers team for taking this team further than anyone thought they could.

Just a few players I want to highlight here.

Let's start with Zawadzki. I think he has clearly established himself as the #1 goalie going into next season, meaning he has the potential to be the starter for 4 straight years. He played in 23 games this season, which would put him on pace to play 92 games in his college career. For comparison, Ryan Scott played 90 games as the only other Oswego goalie to be a #1 goalie for 4 years since the 80s (Paul Mueller in the 80s played 105 games). Based off of Z's winning pctg this season, I'd estimate he's on a pace to win 73 games in his 4-year career, which would set an all-time program record for a goalie (Mueller currently holds the record at 63). He also had 4 shutouts this year, which would put him on a pace to win 16 shutouts in his college career, setting another all-time school record (currently held by Andrew Hare at 11). His save pctg and GAA compares favorably to all-time school records as well. If Z continues his current pace, his save % would be 2nd all-time behind Hare, and his GAA would be 3rd all-time, behind Hare and just barely behind Beckwith. If Zawadzki actually improves over the next 3 years, we could see Z theoretically reset the entire school record book for goalies.

Next I'd like to mention a little something about Matt Galati. He finished his season with 24 goals. Let that sink in for a moment. Not a single member of the "dream team" from the previous 4 years were able to get 24 goals in a season. I went back in the history books and in 2007 (the year we won the championship) McLaughlin managed 24 goals as a sophomore. That was the last time someone has matched that mark. The last time someone EXCEEDED 24 goals in a season was back in the 2003-04 season when Mike Lukajic scored 25 goals as a senior. And he did so playing 2 more games than Galati did. Galati, Botten and Neil look to be shaping up to something similar to what Whitelaw/Moodie/Rodrigues had. If only Neil had been healthy in the post-season who knows how far this team would've gone?

And lastly, I just want to point out how impressed I am with David Titanic as a captain. There's no question that the unbelievable performance of this team this season is partly due to his leadership. Yes, his stats were fine. But consider the number of times this team was able to come back from behind and win. Consider how many times this team was supposed to lose a game and we somehow managed a way to win. One thing more, notice how Oswego's penalties per game went down to 8.45 minutes per game, down from 11.07 last year, and 15.70 the year before that. This team has learned discipline, and especially in the post-season where our PIM per game was only 6.00.

Bottom line, this team has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Two consecutive SUNYAC championships, over 20 wins for the season, an undefeated record against Platty, and a 5th straight trip to the Frozen Four. This year was truly a pleasure to watch this team.

Here's hoping all the players from this year's team stick around for next year. Also, let's hope that perhaps Gosek can attract a new player or two (and he can be picky considering how many players he already has).

And I know it's early, but I'm already calling that Oswego should be considered for the #2 spot for next year's pre-season poll. Next year's expectations are going to be very different from this year's.
Come home, Toto - come home to Oz.....

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

yes dont think this will be a busy off season,we dont have 20+ new guys coming in, I think we will have more guys going out than coming in.

It will definitely be interesting to see who stays? Z had a good run at the end of the year, but still seems to be a bit streaky with his play. I really believe we will see another goalie come in next year. This was a lot of fun to watch this team develop. Now that they have, we will see how they deal with the high expectations which will be on them now. As always, this is going to be fun to watch!

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Man- finally home after 2000 miles on the road last week- 3/4 of them to watch the Lakers.

Bottom line- I thought in both semi games the guys from out west played a tougher, faster, stronger brand of hockey. I think Coach Ed has seen enough of these games and the last year or two has tried to shape the recruits to match up against the Western teams. Getting close. In the final game with the two Wisconsin teams facing off, it really looked like a typical eastern game times 1.5. It was really a different level of hockey than we are used to seeing (and again, that's not news if you've been up to Lake Placid the last few years). Big, fast, skilled.

Congratulations to the team, coaching staff, and Captain T. for making such a deep run this year- very few sane people expected a SUNYAC championship, two wins over Plattsburgh (at Stafford!), and a final four in our "rebuilding year".

I don't have a problem with the Coach of the Year decision, I think it was 50/50. Geneseo did have a great year, was a beast in the SUNYAC and went to their first ever Final Four. For me, I wouldn't trade Coach Ed for anyone out there. The Captain reflects the values of The Coach.

Agree with the comments on the power play- not converting on the 5 on 3 was a killer, we gotta get that working. Z played a good game. Thanks and congratulations to David Titanic on so many levels.

And last but not least, from 3/13:

I appreciate the skills Waterstreet has, but I sure hope he doesn't cause the penalty that finally ends this great run.!

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

If you look at the times Waterstreet went to the box it was because he is such a large young man that is stronger than most. This is also what happened to Selleck. I would tell Waterstreet to keep playing the way he does otherwise it will effect his game. His upside hugh, no pun intended. His physical presence can really disrupt a defense.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

This is also what happened to Selleck.

I agree- he reminds me of Selleck too. But Selleck had 26 points to go with his 45 PIM his freshman year- Waterstreet only had 9 points (with 43 PIM). Selleck got that up to 54 points with 56 PIM his second year. You have to make the deposits in order to make the withdrawals or you're dragging the team down.

A better comparison with Selleck would be Botten- he was second on the team in PIM with 33- but he was also second in scoring with 34 points.

yes as far as the goalies go, dont think we will see Jasmin ..zman earned the #1 job, but I would not be surprised to see another, freshman or transfer come in for sure, gilbert i would imagine will be back.....I'd imagine we will see several players leave who didnt get much ice, and we will probably get 3 to 5 new guys,a transfer or 2 or 3 . Who knows but we should be in for another pretty competitive season.

There seems to be a idea that the West has bigger stronger guys??? We seem to match up pretty good size wise i would say.As a whole the West does seem a 1/2 step faster, and they all seem to really crash the net BIG TIME.I noticed in the Genny vs SNC,SNc was in the paint area all day and genny allowed this,WSP was also in the paint hard and we did OK to blast them, that seemed like the biggest thing to me???As far as skill i think we may have them on that, add Neil to our line-up and who knows,i know 1 player doed not a team make, but he was our top scorer at the time he got hurt.Bottom line for Oswego, I think we have the talent, size speed and skill and coaching,we need to execute the special teams when needed in the FF, and yes a bounce or 2 wouldnt hurt, like OSUMIKE pointed out we havent gotten to many bounces in the FF.

Who seems bigger depends on the teams that are playing. I got to see W-Stout at the Prime-Link and they were by far the bigger of the 4 teams. I wouldn't say that STN was bigger in height but rather in heft to the Genny players. The folks I talked with at the game there seemed to be a consensus that we were the bigger of the two teams and we would have match size with STN. I don't know about the overall speed though. But you are spot on about special teams.

Congrats to Galati and Johnson both made the all-USCHO rookie team......they both made it for their offensive talents, now both must work on the Defensive side of things to get that all-american status.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

We were just watching the Div I Minnesota/Robert Morris playoff game and they mentioned the RM goalie was from Oswego. Dalton Izyk (a good Oswego name) is a freshman, played outstanding for most of the game against the #1 seed. What do we know about him Looks like he last played at Indiana in the USHL.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

He played for former Laker Andy Rozak at Oswego High School and led the to the State title game a couple of years ago. He is a decent goalie who got his shot because fellow New Yorker Terry Shafer went down with an injury. He led RMU to the Atlantic Hockey title with some solid performances.

I am sure he can come to Oz if he likes..:D

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

The latest news on the recruit front.

F. Trent Durocher from the Pembroke Lumber Kings by way of Canton, NY. Big kid listed at 6'5 210. Not a big time scorer with 91 points on 45 goals and 46 assists in 209 games in the CCHL but if he can skate a little more size can't hurt.

And on the alumni front Paul Rodrigues and the Pensacola Ice Flyers captured the SPHL title over Dan Bremner and the Columbus Cottonmouths.

thats a big boy, hope he can skate,he also only had 83pims in 209 games, thought a guy that big would have 400 pims just by showing up to the rink:p,thanks for the update.

Not spectacular but a little depth doesn't hurt.

0.83 PPG, coming from Kenny Neil's old team. He could be good, Neil transitioned well. (Neil put up 1.26 PPG in the same league)
