Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Nice win for the boys last night. It was good to see tites get a goal and a shorty no less. 6 of 7 goals by freshman and another strong performance in net by Z.

Potsdam is just brutal. Their goaltending is actually pretty good but outside of that they don't bring much. They are incredibly undisciplined which found them down three goals after 1 and killed any chance they had of doing anything in the second and third.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

4 PPG, 1 shorty, 2 even....improvement on all fronts - Potsdam had some moments, but this game was never in doubt...today will be a true test for this young team...the opponent, the crowd, the atmosphere...a great night for hockey..... PS - ran into 4 recent Laker grads post game with a few hundred career points among them...alas, no eligibility left.

FYI. Greene's for lunch....1pm if anyone is around.
I think I may have 1 semester left of eligibility?:p

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

Who knows.... Lakers looked great, Potsdam looked bad. Nice power play tonight and I think the week off did them good. Tomorrow night will give us a good read on this team.
agree not sure ,pots baaaaad or us goood...I think the latter, and hope....Zman didnt get to many tests but tonight he will face a bunch of forwards who can flat out shot the puck. Our 2 freshman dmen had better not try a few of the things they did last night or they will quickly have a bunch of minuses next to their name on the score sheet.I think we will see more experience on the blueline tonight for Oz.We have to slow Platty down and wether the first 10 mins of the game, after that who knows??we played a fairly disciplined game last night, must stay out of the box again tonight..

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

A tie against the #1 team in the country. I'll take it.

Thoughts on the game: I've seen a number of games where top 5 teams struggle against much lower-ranked teams and they generally follow a similar pattern. The big team takes the small team for granted, gets a slow start, gets surprised by a few goals. And then the small team's goalie stands on their head to keep the big team from coming back successfully. The big team outshoots the small team 50-15, but ends up with a tie 2-2. Half the game consists of the small team constantly icing the puck just to kill time. That's not what happened this game. This looked like a Frozen Four of National Championship level game to me. This looked like a #1 ranked team against a #2 ranked team. They looked like equals. Maybe it's the magic of Whiteout, maybe Oswego just got lucky. Or maybe Oswego is really a good team that's starting to get themselves together. Plattsburgh did not play poorly. Some Oswego forwards made some unbelievably tough shots, and Z stood on his head on some shots that he really shouldn't have been able to save. The shots were 38-31 in favor of Plattsburgh. Oswego was able to hold their own and prevent Plattsburgh from rolling over them. When the #1 team in the country comes knocking on your door, you should consider it a victory if you can take at least 1 point away from them.

With Gilbert being injured, the goalie question at Oswego has temporarily been settled. But once Gilbert is healthy, I don't think tonight solved the long-term question. If Z had let in 0, 1 or 2 goals and Oswego had won, I'd think the question was settled. But the hockey gods seem determined to leave the goalie question open.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I think the goalie question is pretty much closed for now. Z made some tremendous saves and though he probably would like the Jensen goal back he looked like a number 1 guy. Gilbert has not really looked like a number 1 save the Cortland game.

Outside of that I agree with the rest of what you said 100%, the acquitted themselves very nicely tonight. A lot of folks seemed to think that Friday's game would be reversed tonight but the boys in white showed that they can compete with top teams. They actually had a fair amount of chances to win, it's not like they just hung on.

This was your typical, back and forth OZ-Platty game with no cheap stuff, just good hard clean hockey. I wish every game was like the ones these teams play, not all these laughers with a bunch of rough stuff and goonery that seems to happen so much.

That is a plus 1.

The place was electric...very impressed with Lakers composure and hard work FOR THE ENTIRE GAME... not just part time. If they can keep that intensity it's going to be a good New Year. Thought Gertsakis had an excellent game controlling the defense. The more I see of Galati the more I think he is going to be terrific... great puck control, hard quick shot and that blue line to blue line cross ice pass that caught Wills perfectly in stride was a thing of beauty! A tie felt like a win tonight... hopefully that's the last time I will ever say that.

Galati is definitely one of the stars of the future for this team along with Hulshof, Adams, Botten and Neil at Forward and Johnson and Mac Scott on defense. I was also very impressed with Waterstreet, he threw some huge hits and really used his size well to control the puck and get a few chances.

+100. Gilbert will not start when he comes back. He gave up way too many bad goals and I think he got the benefit of the doubt because he had the "experience" over Z. Z proved himself this weekend. Sure, he gave up 3 to Plattsburgh. 2 of them were PPG when the PK didn't do a great job and the third was a complete defensive breakdown.

Z is the starter. End of story.

As far as the crowd goes, I wasn't terribly impressed. I saw quite a few empty seats (100?) for a game that's been 'sold out' for weeks. I was sitting near the students and it's pretty clear that the majority couldn't care less what was happening on the ice. Many were just looking at their phones the whole time. Quite different from 2 or 3 years ago when the students stood and cheered the entire game and actually followed the game and cared what happened. But I digress.

The Lakers played their best game of the year last night. There's a lot of talent on this team and they will only continue to get better.

Long drive from Oz to the ferry contemplating last nights game....and agree with all that's been said thus far...quality of play was outstanding...speed of play was 3X over the prior nights Potty game...these kids are for real...will be interesting to see how they handle the long break until Pathfinder....the crowd was a bit strange...there were some empty seats but I attribute that to folks choosing to stand instead of sitting in sec. 50 which looked a bit sparse...they were jammed all along the rails....special treat for me was spending a few minutes with Ducky before the game...such a nice guy...he was genuinely touched by the award WTOP and WNYO gave him during their pre-game show before he went on the air.... Final thought - the best part of the weekend was the re-emergence of the captain David Titanic....big goals in big games are his legacy...and watching him work hard all over the ice on the 4th line was great leadership by example....

It is odd that you mention the phone thing. A guy who was standing next to me last night said the same thing and then went to his phone to check the Orangemen's B'game. Also you are spot on with the crowd and the assessment of the team. I hope then can use this great game and build on it for the rest of the season. The Pathfinder touney will be a good test.

Re: Official Oswego State 2013-2014 Season Thread - A New Beginning...

I'm a little confused at the shots on goal. When we left it was listed as 31 - 15 PSU, yet 38-31 officially. After the missed three SOG in the first period, we all started paying more attention and had it figured about 35-16. I have no Iidea where they came even close to this "official" shots on goal. Decent game. Well worth the money. Oswego is very physical and worked well on the boards. A lot of nice shots and a lot of nice saves. Good up and down action. Rematch next semester.

Just back from Oswego and will say it was a good game to watch. I was a little disappointed with the outcome. Having Hermans and Jenson on the blueline might have helped. But who knows. The 5 D. were spread pretty thin. Overall, a very exciting game of hockey as was expected. See you on the flipside in February at the Ronnie B.

We spend a lot of time discussing this young team and what talent we lose to graduation. The same can be said for the student fan. As classes graduate and move on, lets hope the incoming freshman learn to carry on the great tradition that is Oswego hockey.
