Ditto, except didn't know WHAT they were exactly (BPH's homebrews; neglected to find out the specific kinds).

Gold cap: honey kölsch, from a Northern Brewer kit.

Black cap: "cream ale" from a recipe (supposedly a light lager-style ale). It ended up much more like Newcastle - darker, but quite mild.

Strange. The light one was pretty good from the start, but the dark was my problem child. Wish I'd kept a bottle around a little longer, it was intriguing. I might need to modify that recipe a bit and try it again.

I dunno, it just seemed that the lighter one was missing....something. Can't place it, but the flavor was about 2 clicks short of being really full.

That was interesting.

Spent a couple days with the family up in Presque Isle. Dad calls Friday night, "So yeah, grandma only has MGD in her fridge. I know you aren't a big fan of Miller products, so I'm just warning you that you might want to stop off on your way up north and grab a sixer of whatever you want to drink this weekend."

OK, sure, thanks for letting me know. So the next afternoon, four hours to the north, I arrive at the outskirts of Alpena, about 25 minutes from the 'family compound', figuring the first big grocery store in town probably has Labatt Blue. I walk back to the case. Oh hey, they have Michigan microbrews! I always thought this was a Budweiser town. Sweet. I keep scanning the case.

It was then that I saw it. A familiar red diamond logo and the script "Premium".

No fcking way.

In Michigan?!?

This was an easy decision. I even stopped off on the way back home this afternoon and bought out their available supply (only three more sixers, but still).

I just checked the GB website, and I guess there are more Michigan distributors than I thought. Still, that's the first I've ever seen of it in this state.

I just checked the GB website, and I guess there are more Michigan distributors than I thought. Still, that's the first I've ever seen of it in this state.

I must find these people.
Then, I must harass them to bring me Nordeast and 1919.
After all that, I must find someone to bring me Top the Tater, Old Dutch chips, and Ambassador hot dogs.

I ended up not drinking much over the weekend. Went to the Twins game Thursday night, only had a couple Premos. Friday night went to the bar with a buddy from college that came to visit for the weekend and didn't really drink that much. Saturday had a couple Premos and a couple 7&7's at the Twins game. Finally on Sunday night I ended up getting a little drunk. My friend bought a 12 pack of Spotted Cow, because we couldn't find Nordeast, and I bought a handle of Seagrams 7 and a liter of 95 proof grain alcohol. It was a good night. By the end we were mixing 7&7&moonshines, 1/3 of each ingredient.

That's the second time in the past week I've heard of this. That good, huh?

I have a bottle of Basil Hayden's. You can try some next time we all get together.

Eel River's Raven's Eye Imperial Stout. I think I've mentioned their porter and gave it good remarks, the Imperial Stout is off the charts great. Bought it bomber and I can't recall a similar style from another brewery that was as tasty yet wasn't so heavy you couldn't have more than one. Outstanding.

Got a flier in the mail for Big Top Liquors by Ridgedale. Apparently, they are having a sale, and right now the Balvenie 12YO scotch is $30 (instead of the already impressive price of $37).

Not only that, but there's a $5 coupon for any purchase over $15, sale items included.

Guess what I will be picking up this weekend. That's just blatant highway robbery right there.

Thanks for the tip, Rube. Balvenie is not my top pick (Oban and Macallan come to mind for sm and there are better blends) but it's very good and that price is hard to beat.

I've had the Macallan 12, IIRC (it was quite a while ago), but the Balvenie was the first "good" scotch I had, and therefore is a sentimental fave. And the 21YO kicks so much arse (only had that once, though, since it was $20~ glass).

Yeah, the price will make Balvenie your top pick, at least for the time being.

Usually it runs about $40-45 around here.

You know, I was thinking about picking up a scotch or bourbon as I don't have any "good" liquors, just beer and the common bar stock (kahlua, baileys, smirnoff, etc.)

The B12 has a sweeter finish than the usual scotch, since it's aged 6 years in an oak cask and then 6 years in a sherry cask. It's rather lovely, IMO.

Checking the flier, it is the Mtka location only. There are (I think) 3 other Sid's/Big Top locations, and I highly recommend them for good prices on liquor. Usually at least a couple bucks cheaper than your MGM/etc, sometimes more.

Checking the flier, it is the Mtka location only. There are (I think) 3 other Sid's/Big Top locations, and I highly recommend them for good prices on liquor. Usually at least a couple bucks cheaper than your MGM/etc, sometimes more.

Seconded. The Mounds View Big Top had some excellent prices - $18 for a fifth of Maker's Mark sticks in my mind.

I happen to remember seeing that also. And I think one week the Golden Valley Sid's had a homewrecker of Evan for $19.

Word of warning: while the beer selection is quite impressive, unless it's the Beer Of The Month, they are pretty standard in pricing.
