Official 2012 NCAA hockey regionals SYNDICATED games info thread..

Re: Official 2012 NCAA hockey regionals SYNDICATED games info thread..

whoever your provider is (and I'm guessing you're in the Directv boat like me) call them and demand a refund of the entire cost for the month. They are not providing the content you paid for. Do not pay them for it. I already have and they credited my account.

They told me that if a local channel has the rights to broadcast the game they can black it out in my area. I asked, "What sense does that make? I could understand if it was a LOCAL channel in my market that doesn't want the competition, but I can't pick up any over the air channels from 1000 miles away!" But she still said they have the right to black it out...there's nothing I can do about it. I HAVE the package, because now I'm getting like 30 channels that I never got before (Florida, Detroit, etc) so it's just this GAME that's being blacked out - not the channel. But she said they could do that...

@ND: I deleted my post when I saw the other thread.

I still might try to watch on ESPN3 anyway. I think I can get that in HD. FCS-P is only SD on my cable carrier. And I've already got a spare hdmi cable plugged into my set for these situations...

Chickod, arguing with them is futile. They don't know crap in customer service

No, I understand. That's all I said and then I hung up. It is what it is - I tried! It's just that I can't get ESPN3 either for the same reason (I don't subscribe to a CABLE service because I have DirecTV). Oh, well, at least I'll be able to see the 2nd game (BU / Minn) because our regional sports network (NESN) IS picking it up.

Thanks everyone for your input...

you have to be persistent with them. DTV loves to throw obscure blackout language at their subscribers because, really, how many know the ins and outs of the rules, regulations and syndication laws that apply? They literally throw a sentence or two out there and hope most people just accept their vague explanation. I am fortunate that I know them, having spent so much time working in the industry. This is absolutely a DTV mistake and they need to refund your money. Threaten to take your business elsewhere. That almost always works.

And as a side note PSA, remember, if you have been subscribing to ANY of these providers for a while, call them and complain about your service, the cost, the channels you get, something, anything. You can squeeze a reduction in price, something extra in the way of additional channels, or some sort of an upgrade out of them. They have a price point in mind to meet from all of their subs. Beyond that it is all gravy. They want to keep you so they'll almost always give you something. I have done it with DTV 3 or 4 times in the last few years, and have gotten something out of them every time.

Well, apparently I CAN get ESPN3. I just tried and I'm watching the game now! It was really funny talking to the customer service person. She kept saying, "What is it you want to see? HOCKEY??" Like it was played on another planet or something...

First time I can recall that this has ever happened...but apparently it's not an error because the Directv customer service rep just stated on twitter that "FSN 668 is a legitimate black out as the game is only avaialble to customers that are in that local area."

I just tweeted back and asked if that were true, why wasnt the Denver game on Altitude blacked out yesterday?

Altitude isn't FOX Sports. But why is DTV tweeting that it is available locally only when other multichannel providers are carrying it in other parts of the country, such as FOX College Sports Pacific? DTV is lying again, that's why.

Anyone on twitter should send a message to --

@DirecTVService
@fsnorth

and find out what the deal is.

Well, that's the key..."other carriers." This happened when the company who happens to own Channel 7 in Boston and a station in Miami (Sunshine Network) threatened to black out the Super Bowl because they wanted to extort higher fees from DirecTV. Remember, DirecTV can't ORIGINATE programming - the TV stations have to UPLOAD programming, which costs them money. DirecTV has to PAY these stations for the right to show them on satellite. So probably what is happening here is that whoever is providing this game does not want to go through the expense of uploading this to satellite, so it's only being shown over the air (maybe I'm wrong...I can't think of another reason). The fact that they may be "lying" is irrelevant, because the game's not on...

Actually, anything you see on any satellite service has to be uploaded to satellite. How else does the signal find its way to your dish? DirecTV is mistaken, because they game IS supposed to be available in other markets. They are absolutely wrong to "tweet" or say otherwise. FOX Sports North is carrying this game and DirecTV carries FOX Sports North. They aren't paying FOX Sports North anything to carry programming. They pay to carry the channel.

You're right on target WeAreNDHockey. This has also never happened before when FSN North has carried a syndicated ESPN NCAA game that I can recall. It shouldn't make a difference whether it's NESN, Altitude or FSN, ESPN and the NCAA sell the rights to these games and it's supposed to be a free market -- whoever pays the fee shows it. In the past, nothing has been blacked out regardless of affiliate. The only explanation I could imagine is that ESPN is still trying to "stick it" to FSN affiliates and gave FSN North limited rights or something along those lines, blacking it out outside the Minneapolis market so people have to watch ESPN3 or whatever. But I'm not sure that's really the case, and this isn't a mistake. Either way, I'd like to what the deal is.

I'm thinking FSN north encoded the event so that only their footprint customers can get it. How else to explain BOTH DISH and Direct having the same issue?
