Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Living in Cincy now, I would really like to continue watching our hockey games, but if All-Access is going to pull this **** every weekend I don't think it's worth my time or money :mad:

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Well I must say shootouts are much more entertaining when there is nothing on the line.

Outstanding play by both keepers tonight, I have no idea how that one ended up a tie. We seriously need to get better on both sides of the puck if we want to come away with a win tomorrow.

Favorite quotes from this past weekend's Miami All-Access video feed:

"And we have more shenanigans!"

following a Providence penalty:
"...he has time to go to the penalty box to think about his actions....and feel shame."

I like that second one.:D

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Looking at this board and MHT, the general malaise that has overtaken the state of Miami's football and basketball programs seems to be affecting the spirit of even our hardcore, and in many cases longtime, hockey fans. 66, now 67, replies to our thread here? For the nation's #3 ranked team?

I can't help but believe the overall state of the athletic program, hockey notwithstanding, is impacting overall support and spirit on the interwebs. I hate going to MHT these days because aside from the egregious hockey analysis, the board is akin to a morgue.

Go hockey! Go RedHawks! And, let's get some discussion going on here!

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

As a starting point, I do not believe we are worthy of a #3 ranking. I think the Wolverines take it to our youngsters this weekend in their first road series at Yost. If we split, that'd be an accomplishment. I know we're talented, but even our very best teams struggle there. What are we, 5-45-1 there all time? Sheesh...

I agree, we are not worthy of a #3 ranking. Obviously, we have been given extra credit for our successes over the last few years. I believe this weekend will be a very interesting match-up. Of course we all know about our own inexperience, but it seems Michigan is going through some growing pains themselves. They are breaking in two new goaltenders as well and it seems they may not be transitioning to the college game quite as well as our guys have. Perhaps their goaltending issues are also a product of their defense not playing well (and missing Merrill). Just based off some comments I've read, it seems Trouba is a great player but at times can be too offensive focused leaving the team susceptible at the defensive end.

As for a prediction to the series, I know Miami has always struggled at Yost, but I think we can go in there a get a win this weekend. I'm sure it will be as physical and emotional as ever I just hope it doesn't turn into a penalty box parade.

5-45-1: That record is even worse when you put it into the context of 2/5 wins coming in a sweep (2009) :o.

Boy that was a great weekend....

Anyway, I would be thrilled with a split. The contests early this season have been escalating in difficulty, but this will be something else for a young team. Hopefully a weak Yost crowd this weekend may give us a bit of help, but this will be a rough series regardless.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

It will be interesting to see how Rico handles the goalie rotation this go around. If Miami manages a win (or say a 1 goal tie) on Friday behind a strong performance from McKay, do we see him again Saturday? Rico made a point on Hawktalk to correct Greg & Bake on their assertion that he had already settled into another goalie rotation, and would name a starter if warranted. While we pretty much heard the same coach talk for 3.5 seasons with regards to Connor and Cody, you never know.

I blame law school for my relatively low engagement lately, but that certainly doesn't diminish my excitement about this team. I wish there was some way to get a video feed of the games this weekend... this is always one of the best series of the year and I can't even count on a grainy internet stream? So frustrating. I wish the Wolverines were making a return trip to Oxford in this final year of the CCHA, but hopefully we'll be able to schedule them on a semi-regular basis going forward. This weekend will be a great test for our young team. I'll be very happy if we walk out of Yost with a split, though of course I'm hoping for more.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Hard to believe that Michigan of all schools doesn't have an internet stream available for hockey games...has to be some kind of contractual reason for that, no? Or for attendance purposes? Lame either way.

I can't imagine they'd have attendance concerns due to an online stream. I know Friday is on Comcast, which explains the lack of internet stream, but there shouldn't be any contractual issues if no one is carrying the game on Saturday. Maybe Michigan just has so many of their games broadcast that they don't have enough incentive to invest in their own equipment for the few games that don't get picked up.

Re: Official 2012-13 Miami Season Thread: Baby boom!

Getting geeked up for my first game of the year tonight, it was time for the return.

The tribes go forth to war,
Their scalp songs ring afar;
Bright the blood-red camp fires gleaming,
Mad with thrist the war-hawks screaming,
Signal smoke soars high,
Beckons in the sky,
Old men shake their calabashes,
Warriors dance amid the ashes,
Maides sobbing, war-drums throbbing, WAR!

Sweet the vict'ry and the conquest,
Calm the rest among the slain;
Sons of centuries of heroes,
Seek the fruit, despise the pain.
Watch Miami, now,
See the WOLVERINES bow,
Far and wide their host is scattered,
Spears are broken, shields are battered;
Miami! Yuh! Yuh! Yuh! Yuh!
Miami! Yuh! Yuh! Yuh! Yuh!
Race them, chase them, pound them, Wow!

Unfortunately, an impending deadline matched with studying for my license exams has cut into my time beyond checking in periodically.

I was thinking about this earlier this week. I didn't even realize we were in the top 10 until i saw that P. Weston had voted us #3 in her rankings. I thought "we've played 2 solid teams - not not great, but above average. There's no way we could be that high." sure enough....

One of the things that i saw - more in the Providence series than the Colgate series - was Miami's skill & speed advantages washed out by a lack of bulk. This is the risk teams run when they are very youth-dependent. You sometimes sacrifice bulk and strength for skill and speed (only sometimes). If you watch the games again, you'll see that Miami had a clear advantage in open ice: very good stick handling, good instincts/ice awareness, and good passing. Where they struggled the most was when on the boards. It wasn't about willingness or effort. They were simply out-muscled.

Digest and dissect.
