Which is why Miami, which has some of the best talent in the conference, only had 1 player make INCH's All-CCHA mid-season First Team - despite having a huge points lead and dominating all but 2 weekends.

Went over to Indy last night to see the Ice and Berschbach, Wideman, and Cook. Ice are struggling some, at least last night. Good goaltending from both sides (70 or 80 total shots, three goals). Berschbach and Cook played together a lot, but did not generate too much. I have a small sample (three games), but Berschbach had the luxury of playing with Galiev last year and it seemed like whenever they were on the ice something happened. Not so last night. Wideman, on the other hand, surprised me. All I had seen of him was his stats. He looked good to me. He is very small but was active, killed penalties, and is quick. The question for him will be if he can overcome the size issue (5'9", 150 looked generous to me).

Smaller crowd than last year, but last year I went on Valentine's Day and a playoff game and the weather was not good over there last night. Also, not much to cheer about for the home team. Saw Jeff Jackson at the game. Surprisingly, he didn't ask me for any advice. :D Cedar Rapids has at least one ND commit (Costello).

Thanks for the update. I personally would like to see wideman stay in juniors another year. I think berschbach will be fine when you put good players around him he produces. But when asked to be the guy he seems to struggle. It was good to see you yesterday redeagle! Have a safe and happy holiday to everyone! :D

glad to hear that wideman is playing better than his numbers indicate. i agree, i don't think we see him in oxford until he gets another year of seasoning with the ice.

Due to my relative youth, I wasn't around for the 2003-04 season. However, I thought our first NCAA Championship Game appearance was 2009... :p

I noticed that too BandMan. I am sure the Maine people were happy about that. Hey, maybe it is a sign we are arriving. :) At least they didn't say Maine of Ohio.

Interesting article about 6 on 3. I don't remember the details, but I believe Steve Cady pulled the goalie to create a 6 on 3 in the early/mid '80s. My foggy recollection is Miami was down by two or three and I think came back to tie or win. I am not sure if it was the second period or not. Somehow I think it was early third (because I seem to recall it was to visitors net to the right), but not really sure. Gwoz mentioned hearing about it from other coaches at the Huron Hockey School in the early 80s, and Steve was part of that group IIRC. As usual, everything starts at Miami. :D

Actually, if the percentages they talked about in the article are correct (a big if), from an expected value standpoint, coaches would be crazy not to do it. Of course situations matter. For example, I always have a heart attack when I see a forward on the point when we're up by a goal in the third. I know from an expected value perspective it probably makes sense, but ev does not account for risk differences in certain situations. Don't mean to over analyze, but I do find those types of decisions interesting.

It is interesting and they changed it on the front page. I think it all just comes down to each individuals coaching style. Some guys play the percentages more than others who coach from their gut and logic. Basic logic wouldn't tell you to pull your goaltender on a power play in the second period to have a 3 man advantage. But if you have good enough personell who can posses the puck well and isn't prone to turnovers it makes sense, sound like anyone? Its just all about if you are comfortable as a coach to do it. Makes things more interesting when its done, or more nervous in some cases lol.

hello Miami fans (it is Miami right, not Maine?)

if I were to want to come to a home game, say in January, how hard is it to get tickets? are you usually sold out? would we have to buy in advance or at the door?

(who is going to be traveling with a Miami alum and we are thinking about attending a game)

I went to a game over Homecoming weekend and tried to get regular seating tickets. I called the ticket office and was told that the games are basically sold out every weekend. After questioning, the ticket person told me to try on ebay and I did find that there were tickets for sale there. It is confusing because most of the tickets for sale were for "standing room only" but they didn't state that very clearly. Ultimately, I bought some standing room tickets through a friend of friend deal. (standard price is $15/tkt)

I can say that the SR tcikets were well worth it although there is a little jocking around for good sight lines. But, as the game got into the end of the first period, things loosened up a bit. The stadium has a policy that with 5 minutes (?) to go in the 1st period, open seats may be claimed by standing room patrons. That opened up the viewing areas from the top of the stands. As long as you have an open view, you've got a very good view of the action anywhere in the arena plus you can switch positions at the end of periods to view action at the offensive end of the rink.

I did not see anyone scalping tickets so I'm not sure that's an option.

If you get a chance, I would definately suggest you go to a game. The venue is first class.

Sorry, holidays and all...

It's difficult, but not impossible. Start with the Miami ticket office 866-MUHAWKS, and also check the hockey forum on Miami Hawk Talk (www.miamihawktalk.com) for a thread about "ticket exchange." I've seen several tickets on StubHub and eBay so that's another avenue.

I'm a BC fan, but I just wanted to congratulate Miami for rising up to be a consistently very good team. I was pulling for you guys against BU last year, and the end result is that the better team didn't actually win; the luckier team did.

Anyway, good luck in the 2nd half of the season. The NCAA hockey landscape is littered with teams that were awesome for a year or two and never heard from again (The 'Lake Superior State syndrome'). You guys are on a solid path to the top. BC's Eagles are playing well, so maybe our teams will be two of the Frozen Four!

Thanks for the kind words. Though, don't hold it against me if I say I would prefer playing an NHL team before playing any school that has the word "Boston" on the front of their sweater.

husky fan, which game are you talking about? The only games in January are Robert Morris and WMU.

Thanks Chris. Miami is trying to do it the right way and certainly has made a lot of progress. After Ryan Jones' class graduated (and the overtime loss to BC in their last nc year), there were a lot of questions if Miami could maintain, especially after Zatkoff and Martinez left a year early. So far, so good. I for one hope to see you guys down the road.

By the way Lake had a pretty amazing run for at least a decade (mid-80s to mid-90s, Anzalone and Jeff jackson period) and won *three* national titles and was runner-up once in that period. Pretty unbelievable stretch really.

we are thinking of the Robert Morris game. but it depends on the timing - if we are back in Ohio or not.

That is a sunday game, I wouldn't think you would have problems getting tickets. I would actually recommend getting standing room only tickets and moving during the first period because there will be a lack of season ticket holders at that game.
