Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

At least it is better then P Dubs not naming a single Miami player to her all-CCHA team.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Checked some stats.

Gustaffson (NMU) piled up the points 1-21--22. But was only a +2. Seriously? a +2? Someone needs to learn to play defence.

Delgrosso (UNO) led the team in points (seriously? a defenceman?) 4-16--20, and had a +9.

Redmond (FSU) 4-15--19, +2.

Petry (MSU) 2-13--15, -3

Seriously? Petry? No way that kid should be up there.

Wideman: 5-9--14, +15
Schilling: 1-10--11, +21
Hartman: 5-5--10, +18

Apparently the voters forgot about the defence in defencemen.

Using in-league stats (as I believe you did) it did surprise me Gus was only a +2 if only because we had other defensemen at +11 and +12.

One thing to keep in mind is that NMU was only +13 overall in conference play, whereas Miami was +49.

Looking at +/- alone is as absurd as only looking at point totals alone.

Gus was also a fist-teamer last year, which might have held some extra sway with the voters.

Fair enough, but can we both agree that defensemen named to an all conference team should at least be positive. +/- shouldn't be the only factor but it should be given its proper credence. 15 points and a -3 is pretty absurd when you have a player like Wideman sitting at 14 points and +15. Yes Miami has a huge + in conference play but that doesn't happen on its own, players have something to do with it, and it shouldn't be counted against them when it comes to individual recognition.

Certainly not counted against. I agree with you that Wideman and the rest of your D have comparable or superior numbers.

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

From what I have seen, I don't have any problem with Gustaffson. I have not seen Petry as much. The league's best defensive defenseman will be interesting (is that out yet?). For Miami, you have Weber, Schilling and Hartman all good candidates. Take Hartman out because he is a freshman. But it is hard to imagine getting that without being on the first or second team. Also, defensive forward? Given Miami's goals against, also hard to imagine Miami not getting

But, these individual awards don't mean much and always leave good candidates on the outside.

They will announce those and more at the awards banquet which occurs in Detroit next week (right before the semi-finals).

It is always fun to be at Joe when the do the little video clips for the winners, lots of boos and cheers depending on who the player plays for.

I don't have a problem with gus being their either, just eye popping to me that the best defensive team in the league and country doesnt even get an honorable mention. My beef isn't with anyone that was named its with the thought process of the voters. That doesn't make sense to me at all.

After I finished up the stats Gust and DelGrosso didn't really bother me. But Petry?! That seriously is a joke.

Do you think any Redhawks have potential to be play in the pros?

Mike Eidelbes (2:40 PM)

The RedHawks have a lot of talent on the roster and a few of those guys, whether they're draft picks or college free agents, should get a shot. But sometimes it's more important to be put in the right situation e.g. Ryan Jones, a great goal scorer in college who hasn't found the right fit in the pros. What will help the Miami guys at the next level is that they're sound fundamentally and responsible two-way players.

Actually Jonesy was put on waivers last week and Edmonton snatched him up instantly. 8 minutes into his first game with the Oilers, Boogard goes straight for his knee and knocks him out for the rest of the season.

I have already ordered my tickets for the NCAA regionals in Ft. Wayne. Am I safe to assume that Miami will end up there or is there a scenario where they go somewhere else?

Mike Eidelbes (2:42 PM)

There's no guarantee, obviously, but I can't imagine a scenario in which Miami does not end up in Fort Wayne. While balancing the bracket is the primary goal of the tournament committee, they'll make concessions with regard to attendance if necessary. That's why we feel both Miami and Michigan State will end up in Fort Wayne.

Caz (Denver)

What's the likelihood of seeing Denver and Miami meet in the finals? Who do you think would win?

Mike Eidelbes (3:03 PM)

We've said all along that Denver, Miami, and Wisconsin are the clear-cut top three teams in the country, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Pioneers and RedHawks in the championship game. It's a long way away, obviously, but I'd give the Pioneers the edge -- Marc Cheverie is the best goalie in the nation and DU has more playmakers, guys like Rakhshani, Colbourne, Wiercioch, etc.

I was actually looking up stats the other day, and 75% of DU's scoring comes from their first 2 lines. only 53% of Miami's is from the top 2 lines. I'll say that is advantage Miami in scoring depth there.

ummm that guy in the first question no how to form a sentance? I mean seriously, isn't that hard to spell those words so they make sense....

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

What a nasty hit on jonesy there....Sad to see.

He has had a tough time adjusting to the pro game, its a different style. He will find a system that fits him, and to be honest Edmonton is a very good fit for him. Hopefully it isn't too serious and he will be able to go come training camp.

I think I read that it was just a 4-6 week injury, just bad timing in that the Oilers aren't gonna make the playoffs. He was out there in that clip with Gagner though, so not sure if they were on a line together, but if so then at least they're giving him a chance.

That is just the kind of chicken $h*t hit along with the head shots that need to be addressed at all levels of hockey. It is a lack of respect and should not be tolerated. Jones didn't have a chance, Boogard can't keep up and he cheap shots the kid...

I agree, but at the youth level that hit would of been a game misconduct. Along with head shots USA hockey has done a great job at implementing rules to get those type of plays out of the game. Now the NCAA and professional ranks are more relaxed but you can only hope they will follow suit here soon. Atleast at the youth level USA hockey has done something about it and it seems to be helping.

One thing that I can't believe is that Matt Cooke didn't get suspended for that hit on Marc Savard a couple days ago. He hit him with his shoulder but Savard was in a vulnerable position and Cooke went for his head, those type of hits should be deemed intent to injure and game misconducts along with suspensions should be handed down. But its hits like those why they won't take fighting out of the game, guys deserve to get pumbled after that. Which ticks me off that no Oiler went after boogard, I don't care how big he is stand up for your teamate....

Of course she gets some stats wrong, saying the bucks have never won at the new barn (they have, in fact won 1 game, in 8 tries, and 1 tie also). But she also says that we are "are 7-2-4 against the Buckeyes since and including 2006-07". Actually we are a whopping 12-2-4. How the hell does she miss 5 wins? I guess she slept through the 5-0 season sweep in 07/08.

"I don’t believe that the top-tier teams are exponentially stronger than the mid-pack teams they’re hosting, except for Miami..."

Re: Official 2009-2010 Miami season thread part II: Unfinished Business

Hello Redhawks. The Boston Globe actually wrote about hockey west of Amherst ( ) After I picked myself off the ground, I thought I would share this with the fine folks in Ohio.

Enjoy: Miami Scoring on the Rebound

Funny story from Jack Parker at the end of this as well.

PS: I'm on your bandwagon. (Since BU clearly isn't going to repeat.)

Love the suttle shot she took at miami about lossing in the second round last year. Still an OSU homer at heart, this article was very tough to read and I didn't finish it....
