Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

You hit the nail on the head, kimosabe.

The fun(?) will be to see what government programs get axed and the resulting fallout from those cuts.

LOL. they never cut any programs. They just starve them to death until more money comes in then magically they're right back where they were before.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

Anybody want to impugn those numbers before we start debating what they mean? Let's get that out of the way first.

Those figures are the budget with Social Security and Medicare added to the general revenue, my numbers come from the same source (OMB) but do not include SS and Medicare (because they weren't meant to be added in the first place!)

I notice that revenues as a % of GDP drops from 20.6 in 2000 to 14.9 in 2009 and 2010. So I'm not sure how one can say the tax rate is always 19% of GDP.

Jon Stewart Was Right About Fox 'News' Viewers Being the Most Misinformed Citizens

On Monday, the Fox Nation website featured a report about Jon Stewart's much-discussed dustup with Chris Wallace last weekend. During the back and forth, Stewart asked Wallace, “in polls, who are the most consistently misinformed media viewers? The most consistently misinformed?” His answer: “Fox viewers. Consistently. Every poll.”

Fox Nation offered a sneering rebuttal to that claim, dismissing it as yet more evidence of the Vast Liberal Conspiracy to oppress conservatives. The piece would be hilarious if not for the fact that it casts the Right's counterfactual worldview in sharp relief.

The site answered Stewart by posting the results of some Fox viewer polls and then asking, "Does this sound misinformed to you?"

• 91 percent believe the stimulus legislation lost jobs

• 72 percent believe the health reform law will increase the deficit

• 72 percent believe the economy is getting worse

• 60 percent believe climate change is not occurring

Does this sound misinformed? Why, yes, very much so! Maybe a step above the level of angry seniors whose hypertension spikes over right-wing chain-emails, but just a step, and there's plenty of audience overlap.

On the first point: as the Washington Post reported last summer, “Obama's much-maligned economic stimulus package added as many as 3.3 million jobs to the economy during the second quarter of this year, and may have prevented the nation from lapsing back into recession, according to a report released Tuesday by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.” Yet nine out of 10 Fox viewers believe the opposite to be true.

The CBO also said that the Affordable Care Act will decrease projected deficits in the future, and that repealing it would make our fiscal outlook significantly worse. Seven out of 10 Fox viewers believe the opposite to be true.

The consensus among economists is that the U.S. economy is in a very sluggish, lackluster period of recovery. A few predict that we may be heading toward a “double-dip” recession at some point in the future, but I'm unaware of a single expert, anywhere on the political spectrum, who would argue that the economy is now actually getting worse than it has been over the past three years. Yet seven out of 10 Fox viewers believe it is.

Here, via Seeking Alpha, is a graphic presentation of some key economic indicators. It's clear that we're suffering through a disastrously sluggish recovery from an extraordinarily painful crash, but those lines are nonetheless trending upward, not downward, since hitting the trough in 2009.

And 60 percent of Fox viewers believe that climate change isn't occurring, which means that 60 percent think that virtually all of the world's climatologists are engaged in a grand conspiracy to deceive the public in order to … well, to destroy capitalism, according to some of the more unhinged conservative voices in the debate. That should come as no surprise – a leaked memo from Fox News' Washington managing editor ordered the network's correspondents to “refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question."

But all that's just a punchline. The joke is that in an attempt to push back against the demonstrably accurate claim that Fox viewers are the most misinformed news consumers, Fox Nation… misinformed its readers.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

Is anybody actually going to watch Obama's speech on Afghanistan tonight? From what I've heard, this might be the beginning of the end of the Forever War. No doubt the opposition will immediately accuse him of treason.

Either way we're still probably going to have some sort of occupational presence in the region for a decade, and of course we'll be paying for it well into our granchildren's lives. Thanks, PNAC.

The morning news shows said it's going to be 5000 troops this summer and another 5000 sometime this fall. so about 10% total, which isn't nothing, but not exactly earth shattering news, either.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

oh heavens, some people think that wasted stimulus money will cost jobs long term, Obamacare will increase the deficit, and that the economy (even with it being weak while the feds pump money into it like there is no tomorrow). yup, no reason to think anything like that might be going on. everyone go back to sticking your heads in the ground.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

If someone wants a more substantive review of Fox viewers and where they rank (probably not), here's a good rundown:

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-m...ewart-says-those-who-watch-fox-news-are-most/

A bit too nuanced to please the partisans around here I'd guess.

Already saw that. Jon Stewart apologized on the air last night and pointed out his mistake.

Then he listed all the lies that FOX News has told over the years (using Politifact, the same site).

**** it, let's just order the remaining troops to cordon off the area around the massive rare earth metals deposit that supposedly exists over there and start mining it. As long as we're maintaining a military presence, we may as well profit from it to some degree. Then we can tell the Chinese to go **** themselves for hoarding their rare earth metals. :p

We're only 10% into the Hundred Years' War (actually 9%, but who's counting).

And if we substituted Vietnam for Afghanistan, Thieu for Karzai, North Vietnam for Taliban, Bush for Johnson, and Obama for Nixon, we pretty much seeing history repeating itself (again).

Invading / attacking Afghanistan was justified. Invading / attacking Vietnam was not.

Continuing a large-scale military presence is idiotic in both cases, of course.

Sure, but you break it you own it. That's the underlying problem. It seems to deter other nations from war but it sure doesn't deter the US.

The Hundred Years War lasted 116 years (inflation, I guess), so we'd be less than 8% of the way in.

The historical rhyme with Britain in the 19th century might be closer.

They lost, too. Afghanistan is where great powers go to die.

I haven't researched so bear with me but why are the Chinese getting the mining dollars out of Afghanistan? Why don't the Afghans build an economy out of that instead of the damm heroin exports?

I should have been clearer. China is hoarding its rare earth metals - it produces a ****load of them. Beijing has strict export controls in place to maintain a monopoly over the country's production for domestic use. If the US maintains a presence in Afghanistan, we should at least safeguard the massive rare earth metal deposits discovered there and start mining them. Cripes, it'd give the locals something to do other than trying to blow our troops up with IEDs. As far as why the Afghans haven't done anything with them, my guess is because the crap was discovered fairly recently, and that country doesn't exactly have the industrial infrastructure necessary to make use of such a find. Years of rule by an oppressive regime preceded by years of war mixed with tribal rule has a tendency to dampen the development of industry. :p

We should, but we won't. We could have done something with the oil in Iraq as well which would have had benefits for the Iraqi's and us. We didn't.
