Re: Obama Presidential Thread XIX: Starting a new chapter

Here's what I see as the only viable solution to Medicare. Vouchers

Discussing this in the other thread already...but doesn't that sound quite a bit like ObamaCare? Surely that wouldn't be a good thing for senior citizens given how bad it is for everyone else.

Thats nothing like Obamacare.

Really? ObamaCare doesn't involve the government providing assistance, or vouchers, if you will, to people in need in order to purchase health care from a slate of options on a private exchange?

Pretty big stretch there. Reply is in the other threat, but Obamacare is a heck of a lot more than that.

Since this is the Obama thread: hopefully Obama will communicate to the liberal elements American support for democratic movements. We have been at least perceived as the enemy of the population of these countries -- this is a great opportunity to begin to turn it around.

I have started a thread to discuss the events in Egypt.

Yep, do what the rest of the industrialized world does.

If you're willing to accept the stunted economic growth and perpetually high unemployment, have at it. Personally, I'm just not a big fan of having someone else telling me how I have to live my life.

Got news for you but we're broke anyway. Economic growth is stunted and there is no end in sight to the current high unemployment. We've achieved the same ends DESPITE theoretically saving money providing a lesser safety net.

Whats funny is that this is very high unemployment for us, yet it is still under the European average for the past 30 years.

And why are we broke? Because we have spent too much. Revenue to the gov't has grown at a rate well above inflation. Unfortunately, spending has far outpaced that. I don't see how spending more would have somehow put us in a better spot.

The only thing I can see that we can boast about is we have more billionaires than anyone else. About 400. Other than that, no. They may have more unemployment but they also have better support systems in place for their unemployed.

Well there's their problem, those programs obviously provide no incentive for them to get employed so they just leech off the gov't. Get rid of such programs and the unemployment rate is solved!
