Well, of course I get one. I was trying to make a point about the 'cost' of socialism. While everyone talks about how much they 'get' or will get from SS, hardly ever do they mention how much they put into SS. Is the ROI on par with an IRA? a CD? a Christmas Club Acct? a mayonaise jar buried in the backyard?

Frankly we have to actually look back about 30 years to the Soviet Union to see the costs of socialism. Thankfully anyone who sees socialism in the US is delusional.

I think congress pegged the rate increase to the median income or something. And the advice from the "expert" panel was for them to modify it, so it'll be lower for all or at least lower for the wealthy and raise the starting age to 70. How about we raise it to 90 and say the problem is solved. :rolleyes:

Maybe we should shift the idea of SS to an insurance policy for the needy elderly instead of pension system for everyone.

It seems to be better than many pension plans that were negotiated as part of ones salary if they were a member of a large union. The reason I say that is because those pension plans have gone bankrupt even before SS did.

It appears that many smart people have duped many other people into thinking some mythical rate of return really exists. They set up these programs to fail at the outset promising much more than they could ever deliver to get someone to sign a contract. Then they go bankrupt so they don't have to pay out and the worker is left holding the bag. This is happening all over the place right now. It's taken me a number of years but listening to my dad and watching my own investments I know that not to be true.


EDIT: And the day after the announcement that Obama wants to revamp NCLB I offer this editorial.

In this current investment climate, I'd say SS outpaces all 4 of your examples as the markets have performed poorly since the late 90's, CD rates are at rock bottom, and inflation wipes out the other two. :eek:

I am amused though that someone from Michigan would be complaining about the welfare state. Isn't 95% of your population being subsidized by the rest of us?

Further proof that Obama is spineless...jesus no one thinks NCLB is a good idea just let it go already. The teachers aren't going to support you if you think that all NCLB needs is a little tweaking.

Does Obama think the Dems are like the GOP and will just blindly follow him like they did Bush even when he abandoned everything they stood for? They wont, and thos of us in the middle who voted for him aren't going to stick around either if he keeps this up.

It still amazes me how little he has done and his party has done considering they friggin CONTROL EVERYTHING! He could have pushed through his entire agenda...instead he has to make sure to make his hourly TV appearance while Congress argues over which special interest needs the better hookers and blow. Out-friggin-standing!

He's all but done. Things have gone pretty much as I expected. It's why I didn't vote for him.

Obama has made some mistakes...making health care a priority and not drawing down the military. But he is not a Republican...nor has he forced through a leftwing agenda. The far left is PO'd and the right never give anyone else credit except their own team. But as long as he makes good decisions, he still has a very good chance to be a strong president and vastly superior to the GOP which still has no answers.
