Re: Obama 6(...66)

Then why are the US Marines not nominated? They've been "creating peace" for over 200 years ...

I can understand the perspective...but its the same as guns don't kill people...people kill people. The Marines are just an implement of decisions...and its ultimately ideas and decisions that make both war and peace.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

I think the whole thing is ridiculous from the award it self, to his nomination, to the backlash it has brought about and the slobberfest it has caused amongst the Rover-types as well. He should decline the award and then actually accomplish something. Most likely he will just use this as the impetus to go on Leno or host Saturday Night Live.

Um, Handy, point out to me where I slobbered over Obama winning this award? Actually read the thread first. What I've said was 1) I don't know exactly what the criteria are for awarding the prize, so I couldn't tell you who does and doesn't "deserve" to win by their rules, 2) Having said that, I'm happy for Obama (and I can't see why anybody wouldn't be) and for the United States as it certainly helps the country's prestige internationally and has no downside, and most importantly 3) the reaction on the right borders on lunacy. Its downright hilarious, and shows why the current GOP is a laughingstock. Of all the reactions I think Pawlenty so far I've heard just offered a congratulations and left it at that. That's it - everybody else on the right, and frankly of USCHO righty posters, have been acting like children and have embrassed themselves.

Feel free to point out to me where I've gone over the top on Obama winning this award. I await your response.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

False. They've been killing people at the behest of the American people.

But that's an argument for another time.

Wow...I dont have the words to describe how ignorant you must be if that is what you truly believe...its bad enough you think Obama is going to rid the world of Nukes like in Superman IV but this opinion shows you obviously have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Have a good life, make sure to strap up your helmet good and tight...

edit: I am glad I have Rover on ignore except when people quote him and I am still forced to read it :D

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Apparently most of us are not alone in thinking this is premature.

"A beaming President Barack Obama says he's honored to win the Nobel Peace Prize, but says he isn't sure he's done enough to earn it."

Re: Obama 6(...66)

If Obama has even the slightest sense of irony, I'm thinking tomorrow would be a good day for a preemptive strike at Iran's nuke plants...

I am guessing he was misquoted...someone should forward him Beantowns list so he knows exactly what he has done AND tell him he is going to end Nuclear War! ;)

Anybody else think its pretty wimpy to call out another poster but then hide behind the ignore feature. ;)

Classy statement by the Prez.

Fark's headline is the best of the day...

"Barack Obama linked to terrorist Yasser Arafat"

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It still appears Obama is an appropriate winner of the prize.

Tone is very important...and Obama's tone, indeed potentially his doctrine is one of dialog. Folks may forget it wasn't long ago that there was talk of both insurgencies everywhere...and a global war on terror was raging. What happened to those? They're still going on...but the rest of society isn't forced to live the war also. Hence its no longer a war to society.

Perhaps as Kep points out, there is no Ghandi this year...

But somebody, anybody please point out any other candidate with a more impactful set of steps towards peaceful society than Beantown's list of Obama steps in post 835. Otherwise be satisfied with Obama and move on.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

You really need to tone down the anger.

What anger?

I'm also pleased the President and I are pretty closed aligned on this:

And when the manure hits the fan, who do you want next to you? The Marine or the Noble Peace Prize winner (apologies to Teddy Roosevelt)???

That's pretty funny.

Yeah, I'm going to have to join the rest of you as being a little confused by this. I think I have to agree with the article posted upthread saying that the right thing for him to do (both substantively and from a PR standpoint) is to turn it down. "I'm honored but I can't accept this; throw may name back in the hat in another few years."

Re: Obama 6(...66)

So the Nobel Peace Prize goes to Obama for not being Bush II...jesus christ what is the friggin point then. I hate the award anyways because they gave it to Arafat but this might even be MORE ridiculous! The man is going to be in office for a few years still why not wait and see if he actually does something besides give cutesy fun speeches and point at people...there was no need to do this now.

Thank you.

You missed the part about him accepting it as a validation of America's leadership in the world. Exactly the kind of thing you'd like to hear out of the President. Again, good for him and not sure this issue is worth your personal attacks on fellow posters.
