Obama 6(...66)

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Lets remember: THIS AWARD IS SUBJECTIVE. Everyone relax.

But its a good...and might I add substantitive...addition to the thread.

Keep in mind, the nomination was due on the first of February of this year. Anything he's done since then shouldn't matter.

This concern about his nomination happening when he's hardly in office is silly. Of course he's going to be nominated...because a president has so much influence, he could have a chance to win in any year. It is the 2009 (not 2008) Nobel Peace Prize.

Why not?

I think this award is way out of left field, but if the decision wasn't made until recently, why wouldn't you take that into account?

This isn't an MVP discussion where you have to limit yourself to the regular season, only.

Well, then, we should have nominated John Smith and Jane Doe, because even though they hadn't done anything by February 1st, they certainly could've done something in the interim 6 months to promote World Peace....

Generally, a nomination spells out the reasons why you are nominating them. How do you nominate someone for acts they have not yet accomplished?

Unfortunately for that talking point, the body of work that can be assessed for the award can continue until the vote is held. So nomination date is irrelevant.

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed scientific or literary accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

But he still hasn't done anything that warrants him winning it, even with Beantowns list. It isnt like he has been "Derek Jeter in the playoffs" since his nomination ya know?

I think the whole thing is ridiculous from the award it self, to his nomination, to the backlash it has brought about and the slobberfest it has caused amongst the Rover-types as well. He should decline the award and then actually accomplish something. Most likely he will just use this as the impetus to go on Leno or host Saturday Night Live.

If 'campaign mode gets' us to a place with no nuclear weapons, then I'm all for it.

You can't hug your children with nuclear arms :)

As nice as it would be to go back to 1944 and stop everything, no country is going to ever give up its only defense against a superpower.

Well, Fidel Castro and Kim Jong-Il are old and in the process of dying which should resolve some conflicts.

Get them to Oslo! :D

That is great, but what is he working out? Nothing has changed anywhere...by your definition Bush II should have been nominated as well...at least he took some action...Obama (who I voted for) has given speeches and made promises and made no difference in any way to further peace on the world stage. He "is in the process" of setting up his next tour of the talk shows not of making things all ducky and bunny around the world.

True. In 2005 there were 200+ nominations. For all we know, there's a US president slot. Even Shrub might have been a nominee, as hilarious as that would have been.

So nomination outrage is a joke, and the criteria for winning are unclear but are probably not limited to the regular season -- this isn't the Oscars -- particularly since the whole thing is supposed to be forward-looking.

The question then becomes, is awarding it on the basis of the dramatic tonal change by the US worthy? Now, if you're committed to hatred of the change and see nothing wrong with the previous bozo, of course not. For the rest of us...

It certainly gets my personal American Prize (a.k.a., the vote). Does the rest of the world care that much? I guess the Stockholm Boyz do.

Maybe it was just a weak field. Who you gonna pick, Robert Mugabe?

They could have given it to Bhutto on the sympathy vote. (Check: that was 12/07. She's no longer in the pool.)

Then why are the US Marines not nominated? They've been "creating peace" for over 200 years ...

No, because the tone of America changes every 8 years (at least). Maybe Sotomeyer should get it, too, then, she's she's changing the "tone" of SCOTUS. Or the American electorate every other November for changing the tone of Congress.

That's a really wishy-washy argument with no substance whatsoever.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Nice try, Rover. I voted for the Obama, and frankly he's becoming a disappointment, much like you.

Why's this? International relations have gone quite well (Iran's a tbd...that frankly anyone would struggle with). The economy has been healing at an adequate rate...and its waay too early to judge any of the stimulus moves thus far.

Frankly IMO many moderates who have become dissappointed by Obama are of two sorts...either they have been influenced by the same right wing attacks that dogged Clinton for 6 years (while his country leadership was very good) or they were actual living examples of what the right would called starried eye'd when Obama turns out to be mortal.

So your beef is that he has failed to rid the world of all weapons and evil dictators in his first 9 months as US President?

Re: Obama 6(...66)

So the Nobel Peace Prize goes to Obama for not being Bush II...jesus christ what is the friggin point then. I hate the award anyways because they gave it to Arafat but this might even be MORE ridiculous! The man is going to be in office for a few years still why not wait and see if he actually does something besides give cutesy fun speeches and point at people...there was no need to do this now.

Christ now I got sucked into this pointless debate...

No...my problem is that giving him the award now is like when Rafael Palmeiro won the Gold Glove at first base when he spent most of the year DHing...it is stupid and unneeded. Why not give the award to me I voted for Obama and spoke out against Bush II...I have dont just as much to further world peace as the "Televised One" has.

edit: 5mn, you are an idiot. The reason us moderates have turned on Obama is because he has completely lost his spine in office. He ran a campaign where he stood above, and was strong. Christ he took down a Clinton! Then he gets in the White House and worries more about his image than what he should be doing for the country. His bungling of the Health Care reform (allowing Congress to make the policy instead of him...THE HEAD OF THE PARTY) shows maybe he still isnt ready for prime time. Maybe if you took a step back and looked at things objectively you would see that but I wont bet on it.
