O Dam: I fear this won't end well

Re: O Dam: I fear this won't end well

I disagree. We need each other.

I know the red states need the blue states' money. And red state politicians need blue states' social progress to rail against to keep their herds down on the farm.

I'm not clear on what the blue states need the red states for. BBQ I'll grant. And strippers. But after that there's a drop off.

You need us to keep you grounded in reality.

The reality that we could make a little progress if we weren't hamstrung by all that red state deadweight.

Well, I guess that is true, in a way. :D

Until someone in CA finishes the Star Trek food synthesizer the blue states need the ag from the red states.
Oh. Wait. What'll power it?

OK. Ag. Energy.

No major urbanized area is self-sustaining for food or energy.

The blue states aren't just cities, in fact CA is the leading agricultural state and third in energy production.

I also doubt most European countries are self sufficient in food. In fact it would be a return to Adam Smith sanity for the red states to specialize in what they are best at (agriculture, extractive industry) and the blue states to specialize in what they are best at (everything else). The red states can barter food and rhenium for higher scientific goods and services. A mutually advantageous third word to first world trading system. And with nobody educated beyond the fifth grade the red states would experience much less cognitive dissonance turning their populations back into feudal serfs under a theological-plutocratic master caste.

Everybody wins.

Nobody is saying we'd let you turn into a third world country. None of us want to see you sit in the cold and dark, eating avocados you foraged off the ground.

So basically blue areas want to enslave the red ones? No wonder we want to create New Amsterdam...

No. Red staters are too lazy and underskilled to make decent slaves.

We just want them off our welfare rolls.

Yes, because the people who think the Flintstones are a documentary are going to scientifically and economically surpass the people who go to MIT and Cal Tech. :p

left to themselves, you'll end up with a Christian Taliban theocracy. Nobody wants to live next to Afghanistan. We need the red states so we can influence them...

plus the red states have some great national parks and other federal land with great recreation opportunities. I'm considering a move to Utah at some point.

This is certainly true. But I think in the event of a divorce Utah would either stay with us or declare themselves independent Polygamous Deseret. To be honest, I think Texas would go indy too, so we'd probably get those two independent nations, the Christian Sharia Rump SEC, a White Nationalist Reich of ID, MT, and WY, and perhaps an Upper Mississippian Christian Republic run by megachurches and ADM, to go with the Pacific Commune and the Restoration States of Northeastern America (incl. Canada) and the Sane Parts of Great Britain.

By economic power the standings would be:

1. PC
2. RSNA
(a gap)
3. TX
4. POLY
(a big gap)
5. UMCR
(a bigger gap)
6. SEC
7. WNR

Canada doesn't join the RSNA and instead annexes Minnesota. They win. ;)

We just step up the fracking a little, PC will fall off like an old scab.

Be cutting your own throat, though.

Plus demand's going to be cut when the SEC drops back to coal, if not wood.

And yet they are the third lowest in energy use per capita:
https://www.eia.gov/state/rankings/

This site also lists California as the #11 producer of energy:
https://www.eia.gov/state/rankings/#/series/101

more interesting data:
https://www.eia.gov/state/?sid=CA#tabs-1

More great data:
https://www.eia.gov/state/seds/data.php?incfile=/state/seds/sep_sum/html/rank_use_capita.html&sid=US
(CA is second lowest in energy use per capita for residential and commercial, is third lowest in overall usage, is 13th lowest in industrial usage, and 16th lowest in transportation usage per capita.)

This website is awesome!

ETA:
The customizable graph and data set is pretty sweet too

My entire afternoon is shot.
