At least 188,000 people were asked to evacuate in the area near the Oroville Dam Sunday after authorities warned an emergency spillway in the structure was in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled flood waters on towns below.

This used to be something that would make the news in some third world country. Good to know we decided to follow in their shoes. Can't wait for the rest of the infrastructure to finish breaking down.

Gotta be fake news. A dam built, owned and operated by the State of California can't be about to fail. California is the poster child for sane government, the tip of the spear in the new Coastal States of America that is in the process of being formed.

If you're gonna go full snark you have to go full snark. Bring up that CA ignored the Sierra Club's warnings about the dam (warning link above).

Obviously if the Sierra Club is that concerned with the potential failure, *they* can pay for the repairs.

If there's one thing we've learned from the Republican members of the House Science Committee, by studying the problem the Sierra Club caused it. If we would only get rid of the fire department there would be no more fires.

I'm surprised the Sierra Club put up with a dam being installed, especially one of that size, in the first place.

While I'm sure the primary story we'll hear about will be the failure of the federal government to do something ahead of time, I think an interesting part of this story will be the policy and timeline of events that occurred in the last 6 months or so with respect to operations of this dam.

The dam apparently serves a couple of purposes. One is to control flooding downstream due to snow melt out of the Sierras. The other is to provide a steady source of irrigation for the farmland below the dam.

It looks like part of the system of this dam includes pumps that pump water out of the lake created by the dam into separate holding areas. This forms a source of reserve water for periods of drought.

This area has been under a pretty good drought before this year. In fact they were showing some pictures from a couple of years ago and it was shocking how low the water was in the reservoir.

It sounds like they were controlling the release from this dam in recent days or weeks to protect downstream areas from any flooding. The problem, however, is that it was done at a cost of letting the reservoir rise to a point where, combined with heavy inflows, the emergency spillway suddenly came into play.

I'm sure a lot of questions will be asked about how much water was let loose, and when, in the days leading up to now.

I'm wondering what the drought did to the integrity of the structures. Dry ground cracks and becomes unstable. Want a problem after that? Just add water ...

The extremes of drought and then flood conditions isn't helping. We seem to be having more and more extreme lately in everything weather related. I sure wish someone would bring that to someone's attention...................

As I've been told by others, there's a difference between weather and climate.

Hard to keep up on all of the dam building going on at the time. The first dam that broke in that era was in Idaho (Teton Dam, failed in 1976 as it was almost filled the first time), so nobody paid attention.

To pile onto the Rs- this dam was built when Regan was governor.
