Western Michigan's Jeff Blashill might be worthy of consideration. Michigan native, played at Ferris, coached under Rico at Miami and had two successful seasons with the Indy Ice of the U prior to, thus far at least, revitalizing WMU's program.

Keith Allain would be a major coup. Dont know his contract status at Yale, but he has done a great job with a struggling program and may be ready for a move.

After one year? That doesn't happen often in college athletics, nevermind college hockey.

Something like it happened at Notre Dame 10 years ago when Matt Doherty replaced John McCloud as the hoops coach and then left after just one season for North Carolina. Sort of a comparable situation, as the Notre Dame basketball job was an OK gig, but in a completely different universe from the North Carolina situation. Sort of like a move from Western Michigan hockey to MSU hockey.

Something like it happened at Notre Dame 10 years ago when Matt Doherty replaced John McCloud as the hoops coach and then left after just one season for North Carolina. Sort of a comparable situation, as the Notre Dame basketball job was an OK gig, but in a completely different universe from the North Carolina situation. Sort of like a move from Western Michigan hockey to MSU hockey.

Also Doherty was a UNC graduate.

MSU doesn't get the "Capital One money." All the Big Ten (or 11 or 12) schools split all bowl monies equally. The league puts it all in a pot, deducts expenses, then all 11 current teams get an equal share. The actual payment to State will be about $3.5 million.

First problem with what your saying is that the extra cash may not be allowed to go towards hockey. Many donors ear mark donations to go towards specific programs. So the successfulness of the football team probably resulted in more donations going towards the football program and nothing else.

Second problem. Just because they have money does not mean it would go towards hockey. MSU might choose to invest that extra money back into football so it can make more money in the future. They also might distribute it around that athletic department. Michigan like every state in the country has been having a ton of budget problems and has had to make cuts to higher education. MSU would probably use that extra cash to either cut aid to the Athletic department or put it in other more needy departments around the school. Hockey is low on the priority list in times like this.

I don't think you understand MSU. There's a reason Munn is called a morgue. Many of us that are season ticket holders have been since before Ron Mason was the head coach. We're an influential fan base that's getting disgruntled. We were here when hockey was the only game on campus. Season ticket holders alone accounted for sellouts for around 25 straight years. There's still a belief in the community that you can't get tickets to games. To not be a contender every year is no longer acceptable. Especially when the basketball and football programs are playing so well. Hollis has been under a lot of pressure. I like Comely but it's time to move on.

I believe Gwoz is the first choice, Cole is the second and it won't get any farther than that.

No matter what, Michigan State was going to get 1/11th of all of the bowl money earned by the Big Ten (roughly $3.5 mill). Considering one of the two spots in the Capital One Bowl is reserved for a Big Ten team, they didn't earn any additional money by happening to be the Big Ten team to fill that slot.

You could say that they got more money by the Big Ten getting 2 teams into BCS bowl games, as opposed to just the guaranteed one. But that's only an extra $17 million ($18 million for the BCS game, minus the ~$1 million the Big Ten would get from some lesser bowl when everything trickled down), divided amongst 11 teams is ~$1.5 million. But the Big Ten gets two teams in BCS games about half the time, so it's really only $750k more than they expected.

That's taking the easy way out. Yes, he got UAH to the NCAAs, but that was as the champion of a pitiful conference. He was at Bowling Green for three years before that - and we all know how successful BGSU has been. MSU is not like that school down the road - you don't have to be a "Michigan State man" to coach here. Maybe there is someone out there who doesn't have ties to MSU who could be just the right person. Give it time.

Fearing that I might throw the guy under the bus, I'll just say that I'll be extremely disappointed if Hollis settles for Cole. I thought he really whiffed when he was at UAH after Doug Ross' departure.

Hollis needs to hit a home run here, whether he knows it or not. Cole would be a squib bunt down the third base line.

Matt Doherty is hardly a name you want to fall back on to your alumni and boosters as a comparable when making a hire. He turned North Carolina basketball into a dumpster fire by his second season. The other recent "coach one year and out" name was Lane Kiffin. So, yeah.

Blashill's not a big enough name to placate the MSU fanbase, especially after coaching 26 collegiate hockey games.

If they get Gwoz, it'll be because they agreed to a list of upgrades and demands that's a few million dollars long, I'd assume. Cole is their "Brady Hoke."

well it's just my opinion but the list of guys out there who can come in and win more than Comley did is real short. Regardless if they are available. I agree Gwoz would be on the top, but I don't think you can get him.

Gwoz can gain a lot of DU contract leverage with an NCAA run this year to either the Frozen Four or at least an opening NCAA win and a close loss in the regional final.

He hasn't won an NCAA game in 5 years, and that's probably why DU isn't in a hurry to sign him to a new contract - his current deal is up in 2014.

Some DU fans think DU should just pay GG whatever he wants as a reward for his achievements and be done with it.

But this DU administration is more about pay-for-recent-performance.They gave him a top five deal back in 2005, and I'd love to see Gwoz go deep in the tourney and force DU to pay him big again.

But if he can't win NCAA games anymore, I could see DU letting him walk and bringing in a less expensive coach, especially if DU is forced to play in a crippled WCHA if Wisconsin or Minnesota are not replaced.

I think we'll know a lot in April about Gwoz' future.

Doubtful. Their average attendance this year was actually lower than last year, despite having probably their best regular season since the 1960s. Though they technically got a share of the Big Ten title, either through tiebreakers or common perception, they were a 3rd place team. And they got destroyed in their bowl game. I don't see that translating into them suddenly swimming in cash.
