Notre Dame to Big 10?

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

The stuff that looks the most likely right now is,
Nebraska to the Integer

XII South minus Baylor plus Colorado to the PAC-10

So the question then is, does the Integer stop at 12, and what of the four leftover XII North schools and Baylor?

Even if the Integer doesn't stop at 12, a raid on the Big East could now possibly be fixed by taking on some or all of the orphans from the XII North.

I think ND's alumni base are more strongly opposed to Integer membership than they are to conference membership in general, and they're pretty strongly opposed to the latter.

Someone will take Baylor, it just wont be who they want. Its kind of like if the ACC was raided, nobody would want Mississippi State.

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

What's funny is that if this is true the ACC will probably try to snag a Big East team to make up for the loss of Maryland. UCONN seems the most likely.

UConn will not be invited to the ACC thanks to Dick "War hero" Blumenthal and their pointless lawsuit. If Maryland were to leave, the ACC is more likely to make a run at Pitt.

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

possibly, or the more likely scenario is that the sec doesnt sit idly and let the Big 16 and Pac-16 bulk up around them and snatches FSU, Miami, VT, and Clemson/GT forcing the ironic merger of the remnants of each to form the Big ACC.

Very unlikely that the SEC looks to expand unless it adds a freakishly successful program (Texas) that can expand their footprint. They are getting 2 BCS bids already with their 12 team lineup. Everything is good. TV revenue is through the roof in the current format. SEC Title game is doing well. Adding a few teams for the sake of going to 16 just cuts up the pie. The SEC already has the footprint and adding a lot of these ACC teams doesn't expand that.

Texas is the big one with Nebraska out the door. If Texas bolts to the PAC10 everything will change rather quickly.

I hope this is over with soon.

UCONN is the team in the state of CT right now. Pitt while having a following does not command the Pittsburgh market. UCONN would bring in more money for the conference and that's what this whole thing is about.

Oh... everyone in the state of CT loves Uconn. In that case, maybe we should reconsider!

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

ESPN and Denver TV both reporting the Nebraska move.
ESPN reporting that Colorado is going to the Pac 10...Let the bloodbath begin. College sports as we know it is about to implode.

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

The dominoes have just begun to fall. This might just be the end of the NCAA as we know it. This all might also lead to the disappearance of the non-revenue sports (yes, that includes hockey) from the ESPN family of networks.

No doubt some people will celebrate that, but given a choice of ESPN doing a sloppy job with the games and not being able to see the games at all...

Saw on ESPN.com today that ESPN's highest ratings this year will be during the World Cup, not college sports.

UConn won't be getting an invite, trust me. They'd offer Rutgers before UConn.

This was a long time coming and no surprise to me. I just find it laughable how some schools (UConn) are trying to do the same thing that they sued Boston College/Miami/VT about in 2005. Total hypocricy.

Re: Notre Dame to Big 10?

This will certainly lead to a shuffling of hockey confrences -- the big guys are all about the money--that is what has made all this happen. In my opinion there are 7 big athletic depts playing hockey, you can easily make a case for a conference with 6 of them. AD's are not into little rivalries, they are into big bucks and TV.

You think so? I think hockey is somewhat insulated from all this stuff, so I'm not sure how much this would affect it. Wisconsin and Minnesota dont play in the same conference as Michigan and MSU now (Big 10 schools), so I dont see the need to change, but who knows.

And most of the money is in the Big (?) schools. Oh ****, this has morphed back into a BTHC thread. :p

It may not be called that....but I have to think that the business side of those Athletic Depts are all thinking now is the time. 25 years ago HE shook things up, I think this is the next step

I guarantee that ESPN would not carry non-revenue sports. You would have a hard time getting ANY national station to cover them. Maybe the NHL network would carry a game of the week at best.

Without an NCAA umbrella, I think non-revenue sports would have a REAL hard time surviving at all without football and basketball and the $$$ they bring in.
