Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Curious as to why you say that? Your team looked pretty good the other night.
Pretty good apparently isn't good enough since we lost. I've seen this many, many, many times. Tons of talent, great start to the season, then--BAM--disappointment. I would be willing to bet a few bucks that we won't win more than 6 games the rest of the season (3 of which could be OOC), which means they would finish significantly below .500 in league play and just below .500 overall. At the start of the season (a season that began with a 5-0 record), I commented that this team seemed "different" than other incarnations. I couldn't (still can't) put my finger on it, but the way they protected each other, lifted each other in play, worked as a team on a mission told me they had great things in their future. Players from Stephen Johns, who played the smartest hockey I've seen from him since he played his first game here, to Steven Summerhays, who was unbelievably "quiet" in net (and the results were remarkable), to newcomers like Vinnie Hinostroza dazzling us with his skills and captains like Jeff Costello, who seemed to be taking his teammates in uncharted territory have all reverted back to what I have seen for many seasons now. Mediocrity.

How is that possible? This team has enough talent on it to gag a maggot. You can't swing a dead cat at the Compton without hitting an NHL draft pick. Does this team not care about winning anymore? The new digs, the outdoor gimmicks, the "fanbase" all seem to be enough. I gotta tell you, as a long-term part of that fanbase, from my seat, those are not enough. I want wins. I want banners. I want trophies. Short of cheating, I want my team to do everything under the sun to make that wish list come true.

It seems like too often, Notre Dame teams, whether it's the football team, the men's basketball team, or now, the hockey team, are just happy to have paying customers who buy the latest jerseys and pay too much for a hot dog. They throw all the gimmicks at the fans who have the attention span of a gnat: jumbotron, loud music at every single stoppage of play, salute this or that hero, show off your signs while jumping up and down like a kid on meth as the camera tells you to scream like a champion today. I'm sick of gimmicks. I'm sick of new this and fancy that. I want my team to win. Period.

Is this too harsh? Wait, don't answer that because I don't care. The truth hurts.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Stephen Johns is an excellent hockey player and every team in Hockey East would want him.

Summerhayes? Decent goalie but he needs to stop "accidentally" knocking the net of its moorings. He did it at Lowell earlier this season but the game on Saturday took the cake. I swear he did it 20 times against BC.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Happy to see Jeff Jackson has only partially equivocated on his original stance on outdoor hockey. While he went out of his way to praise the Fenway park organizers and staff for putting on a "great event" and for the yeoman work of the staff who were maintaining and repairing the ice, he was pretty clear in his feelings about how overplayed the whole outdoor hockey thing is getting. What I find comical is while he decried the stale atmosphere and empty seats of the NCAA regionals in some places and says change is sorely needed, he didn't decry all the empty seats (and IMHO also a stale atmosphere) at Fenway park, which wasn't half full for either game Saturday.

Something I also find troubling is the number of players who walk off the ice after these games singing their praises, win or lose. This paragraph in Dan Murphy's BGI article in particular troubles me

Players, so far, seem as enamored with the experience as fans. Despite losing in the wind and cold Saturday, Notre Dame seniors T.J. Tynan and Bryan Rust both said it was a memorable night. "It was great to be able to walk out of the tunnel and see all these fans in such a historic building. It was great for us," Rust said.

I'm sorry but I don't want my team taking positives from losing a game that counts in the standings and for the PWR, regardless of any of the circumstances of the game. I get the sense that sometimes these guys are forgetting that, especially with all the external hype still being applied to these games despite the growing pedestrian nature of them.

Right now there is no margin for error for this team and to treat this game as any sort of an exhibition is beyond acceptable. The CFIA is still somewhat new and novel, and these seniors still remember playing in the JACC, but do I want them walking off the ice after losing to Massachusetts saying it's great to play in one of the best buildings in college hockey? Hell no. I want them lamenting another lost opportunity at points in the league against a bad team and thinking first, second and last about how to make sure they win their next game. Because believe me when the final buzzer sounded Saturday night I wasn't thinking what a great thing it was to play in such a historical building. I was thinking how in the world do you get one shot on net during a five minute major PP. How do you give up a shorthanded goal? How do you look so lost on bad outdoor ice 11 months after playing so smartly on it during the previous outdoor game? Irish players may have thought it was a great experience. I respectfully disagree.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

Ugh seriously you don't get it. This is a massively popular thing with the players. Playing at Fenway Park is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (or twice for most BC players to come through lately). They see the big picture... it's a tremendous event in their lives win or lose. I know that's hard to imagine as you sit in your mom's basement debating whether your doctor is right or not to call you obese but that's the way it is. You wondered how Notre Dame could give up a SHG ... on bad ice... against a team like BC? Yea gee how could that happen? That's like inconceivable. Oh by the way, welcome to Hockey East (not really).

well, seems like you guys have been under performing for a while now. Hey, Jeff Jackson is on the same level as Jerry York , the drunk on NESN said so, so have faith, he'll turn things around for you as he puts you to sleep. .............BC has victimized a few teams with shorties this year so don't feel bad about that

Wow. HE is harsh. We can't even come onto our own thread and gripe about our own team without being blasted by the opposing team's fans. Jeesh.

You're welcome :D

I had an earlier post praising Stephen Johns for being a hard nosed player. In that same post I said Summerhayes "accidentally" kicks the net off its moorings 20 times a game. You ND fans must know he does that all the time.

Once again; welcome to Hockey East. The home of awful officiating that screws both teams on the ice.

Re: Notre Dame Hockey 2013-2014 Go East young men

So Bryan Rust gets his first HT since midgets, Riley Sheahan scores his first NHL goal and ND moves up to 11th in the PWR (thank you Western Michigan!). A successful hockey weekend. Give UAH credit...they never quit the entire weekend (and the waived off goal Saturday was a bad call). The only thing that leads me to not completely hate playing UAH twice here (3 times if you count the Shillelagh Tourney) is that we better go to Huntsville next season and return the favor. Why do I think ND is arrogant enough that that won't happen?

A familiar (now OOC) foe awaits before the uphill climb of the rest of the HE season. Please don't let the first month of the season be for naught.

I think you may be looking at the College Hockey News PWR. If I'm not mistaken they are using the outdated formula for calculating the PWR. I think The Irish are still on the outside looking in at 16.

You are correct. From what I can tell, they are technically 2 spots out if AFA or Mercyhurst is the last team in. Wonderful.

Dripping with sarcasm and pessimism lately JJFP. I am more optimistic about the second half. Results against UAH are unfortunately meaningless, but I think this team obviously has the talent to beat most of the teams in Hockey East and now knows they have to bring it. LSSU this weekend should be a sweep if they're truly top 10 material, but we all know how difficult it is to apparently not play down to an opponent's level.

candycanes... I'm curious. Who are you rooting for when BU visits South Bend in February?

If you're talking about the gratuitous personal invective, all of it seems to emanate from Chestnut Hill. The rest of us don't let it bother us, considering the source.

They're not necessarily predictive, but I wouldn't say they're meaningless. It was kind of a big deal that ND beat UAH comprehensively both nights, especially considering the Chargers have had a tendency to keep the second game of a series close after losing the first one big. The Irish had a better series against UAH than did SCSU or Ferris State, to pick a couple of highly-ranked examples.

I'm going full fanboy. Despite the trouble on our end of Comm Ave, I still have to put scarlet and white first. :p

You're right, meaningless was too strong, just that the type of goals they were able to get won't be there against the teams down the road.
