Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

I just wish we were a bit more creative in design these days, as those concrete box buildings are just plain sad, and some of the funky stuff out there really doesn't make much sense.

Ruskin said "Great nations write their autobiographies in three manuscripts: the book of their deeds, the book of their words, and the book of their art. Not one of these books can be understood unless we read the two others, but of the three the only trustworthy one is the last."

Gothic cathedrals bespeak the "discarded image" of Medieval civilization. They are sublime, laborious, and extremely optimistic.

Our buildings bespeak our civilization: bloodless, Benthamesque, knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

We get the buildings we deserve.

Kenneth Clark said a civilization writes its story in three books: its art, its literature its architecture. But you can only trust its architecture to tell you the truth.

When I first was travelling through Calumet (UP of MI) I was in awe of the churches. They were only 100-150 years old (educated guess), and they were beautiful. I don't know specific styles of architecture, it was never a subject that appealed to me, but I know what I like. Notre Dame was one of the pinnacles of beauty in my eyes. It was, in the original definition, awe-ful. There are really no words in seeing something like that.

Amen to this. I know, when driving around here, I love to see the spires and domes on some of the older buildings. And I have to agree that art is part of the "truth", as I just don't plain understand Jackson Pollock at all.

This happens in the rundown cities in NY, PA, NJ, and even New England. In these utter sh-tholes there was a brief summer of history when they were rolling in it: the rail spur or the canal or the mine was booming. And during that period they built beautiful churches. Then the economy went bust and the tide rolled back out and beached those structures like delicate luxury liners.

I certainly hope they were successful in that.

Also, weren't there a few people buried there as well? Sad that their eternal slumber be disrupted. :(

Had the pleasure to visit Chartes in Decembers. It's fantastic.

I am deeply envious.

I have heard you can still start out 30 miles outside of town in the farms and walk towards it, and watch as the towers and roof march up from the horizon -- as if you were back in 1200.

Imagine this in the middle of a Kansas wheat field:

If you have ever taken the interstate thru Worcester, there is (soon to be was) a beautiful church on the east side (the arena is on the other side). The Diocese is selling the church for whatever motives the bishop has.

OTOH, the late Cardinal Keeler renovated the Baltimore Basilica back to where it was ~100+ years ago. The acoustics are magnificent and the interior is inspiring.

That is exactly what happened in Calumet. Mining industry went kaput so the towns followed suit. I don't know if some are still open, and I'd like to find out one of these days, just to see the artwork/architecture inside. It's not cookie-cutter, it's friggin' art to me.

I can disagree with none of this and it was one of my favorite stops during our December road trio trip across France, Luxembourg, & Belgium. It's truly amazing. We drove in from the south but looking back as we were heading north it was even more impressive. It is in the process of being renovated (pray, cross your fingers, drink your favorite beer in hopes it stays safe :) ) and it's truly amazing to see the brilliant white marble columns and choir screen in its original form.

The Cathedral in Reims is amazing, too. Significant number of French monarchs were crowned at this Cathedral.

Last one that stood out to me was Rouen which was magnificent. This was also under going renovation so cross your toes...

The Wieskirche in southern Germany? Thought you may have heard of it...

I haven't. It's... um... it's kind of a dessert! :-)

There are churches like this all through western rural Austria. They all have those wonderful churchyards:
