Gothic cathedrals bespeak the "discarded image" of Medieval civilization. They are sublime, laborious, and extremely optimistic.
Our buildings bespeak our civilization: bloodless, Benthamesque, knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.
We get the buildings we deserve.
I just wish we were a bit more creative in design these days, as those concrete box buildings are just plain sad, and some of the funky stuff out there really doesn't make much sense.
