Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

No, the problem is the answer is: "why not both?"

You're falling into the GOP trap of we can't even pay for X, so why are we funding PBS or giving health care to anchor babies. We're the richest country on the farking planet. We can afford all of the above.

Except in that case both things affect us. In this case we are talking about a church in another country. There is nothing wrong with prioritizing in that regard and is hardly a GOP trap.

Again it isnt like we all cant send them aid if we want to help the rebuild. The USG isnt the only means for its citizens to help rebuild the landmark if they so choose. I personally dont want to (plenty of buildings I would choose to support LONG before Notre Dame) so I would rather if the people in charge just left my money out of it.

And sorry Kepler I get what you are saying but Notre Dame doesnt affect me in any way. Hell when I was standing in front of it I thought the same thing. (loved some of it though) I have been inside the Great Pyramid and been spitting distance from the Sphinx. I walked inside King Tut's Tomb. Notre Dame doesnt even compare.

Didn't they previously restore it themselves in the 19th century, after the various revolutions left it in less-than-stellar condition?

It's constantly in restoration. The 19th C work included adding the spire.

Again, the argument that you don't want to spend it is different than "we can't afford it because hungry kids."

France wouldn't take our money anyway, which makes it all the dumber to not make the offer and get the diplomatic credit for doing so.

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

I am glad to see it in person when I was only 20 in 1975

Hard to believe after all this time this happened after centuries of existence and surviving world wars and other eras of conflict

But I am glad it will be restored quickly with the sudden donations quickly given, hopefully within 3-5 years it will be reopened

The UK Daily Mail is reporting "glass roof" and "greenhouse" also.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...cts-propose-replacing-damaged-roof-glass.html

There is precedent for the French to take something glorious and to put a glass eyesore into it ....

The Mail is a Poutrage site which loves to pull knucks' tails with stuff like this. I'm shocked they didn't claim the Muzzies are demanding minarets.

Plenty of other righty outlets are, but you know that. :D

They really should. Minarets are much prettier, and it's the same level of theological bullsh*t.

Minarets are awesome but Chartres doesn't need them.

When one surrendered at first sign of trouble, bombing becomes unnecessary

When one surrendered at first sign of trouble, bombing becomes unnecessary

I loathe this line of thinking. Forget that for centuries France was a military power. Forget that we owe our very freedom to the French navy. Forget that rather than dealing with a pesky band of rebels the English had other problems to deal with thanks to the French infantry. Forget that they fought gallantly to defend their homeland in the first war. Between the two wars France had dozens of governments. They ranged from incredibly far left to incredibly far right. Some governments only lasted days before they were replaced. There was a vacuum of leadership at the top, both political and militarily. Hitler couldn't have timed his attack better. French generals made plans to hold defensive positions only to be told by messengers that the spot they wanted to fall back to and defend was already overrun. Surrender was an acceptable choice simply on a humanitarian basis, never mind militarily. There were an awfully lot of French citizens who welcomed Hitler. You think right-wing politics and antisemitism only existed in Germany? There were also plenty of Brits who were eager for Hitler to invade England and get rid of Churchill and Parliament. And plenty of Americans, too. If the current misadministration had been in charge then we'd have fought alongside the Nazis...after all, they're good people.

If you've ever visited the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre or any other French landmark then you don't get to say a word about them surrendering. Those sites simply wouldn't exist. And bbdl, don't bother reporting this post, I'm not deleting it.

Re: Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down...

Listen to Hardcore History - Blueprint for Armageddon. That will definitely change any mind about France being a bunch of surrender monkeys.

The US surrendered all its civil rights after one attack and 3k casualties. France had 20% of its of age male population slaughtered in WW1, kept fighting, and stopped the Germans in their tracks.

We're the surrender monkeys.
