Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Works"

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

I agree. It's pretty remarkable that unranked, under .500 NU can pull off a sweep ON THE ROAD against the #2 ranked team and not get front page mention for it. Having been at the CC/DU game Friday night, and given what happened there, it deserved the top mention that it got, and NU was mentioned on the front page for Friday. But to me, for NU to be ignored in the Saturday headline after completing the sweep is total crap. Bemidji St vs. St Cloud was on the Saturday headline for god's sake!

Ditto....but is anyone surprised by the lack of recognition?

Bemidji St vs. St Cloud was on the Saturday headline for god's sake!

Robin Williams was great in that movie :D

Welcome to our world. Ohio State has been hot lately sweeping Michigan in Ann Arbor for the first time since '86, 1st place in the CCHA and was 3rd in pairwise and NOT A WORD in the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. Got some coverage this weekend but very back of the sports section, so for NU to have a great weekend and be ignored I feel your pain.

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

Just wanted to stop in to say what a treat it was spending time at Notre Dame this past weekend, 30 hours in a car well spent :D Everyone was super friendly, the ushers were very pleasant to talk to, and a number of Notre Dame fans went out of their ways to chat me and my friends up. Really great experience, also your arena is GORGEOUS, they did an INCREDIBLE job with it, it has the homely feel you want in a college rink and the modern amenities that you want in a new rink. It was a real treat to see, I'll certainly be back, next time probably with a football game thrown in there too :D

You did mean "homey", didn't you?;)

Sounds like our fans were given first class treatment. Thank you ND!

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

I just noticed the new USCHO poll is out....yes, everybody knows polls are meaningless...but some knucklehead gave Notre Dame a first place vote after getting swept at home by unranked Northeastern?!! Need to find out who cast that ballot and have him/her banned.

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

Apparently mistakes in the poll are common. The CCHA writer on this site forgot to include Notre Dame earlier this season while every other pollster had them in the top 10. My guess is someone voting ND #1 was a mistake -- literally -- as well.

Nice weekend for the Huskies, to say the least. Anyone rooting/playing for Notre Dame who wasn't sick going in probably was afterwards.

Was the CCHA blogger serious - blaming it on the flu? Haha, they got waxed one night and in general out-hustled, that's the reality.

The blogger can be called an apologist, but not a professional. Perhaps her future writings should be published in the USCHO gossip column!

Doesn't claiming in print on the internet that something is not being discussed "on the record" immediately put the statement "on the record"? What a crock! If Lake State was suffering from a viral scourge, they should be commended for their solid 5-2 win over the Irish and for going 3 for 4 on the power play. Can you just imagine what they might have done had they been feeling better?

Re: Notheastern at Notre Dame: "Hey, Goliath. Let me Show You How this Slingshot Wo

There has been a flu bug going around campus and through other sports teams. It's sent basketball players to the infirmary and knocked them out of games. I would not be surprised if the ND hockey team were weakened by it, and if that's the case, I would imagine the coaches aren't talking about it on the record because they don't want to appear to be making excuses. (Also, it's bad form for the blogger to print "off the record" material, and a good way to get on the coaches' bad side.)

I certainly hope that the weekend does reflect NU's "true" ability, but I don't really believe that it does. We'll see. Two games don't make a season, but they could be an excellent building block.

Please, sad excuses. This is a LeBron attitude, not a Dirk attitude. The flu goes everywhere. UND got outskated all weekend. Simple as that.

I don't care to excuse the results, which are what they are, but I was very surprised by how poorly ND played—and nobody will convince me that all of the credit for that goes to NU, certainly not a 9 - 2 game. It's certainly possible that it just happened to be a bad weekend without any extenuating circumstances, but at the very least the timing is a remarkable coincidence.

I'd rather remain skeptical of how far NU has come and be pleasantly surprised when they finish the season ranked in the top 5 than pencil the Huskies in for a top seed in the NCAA tournament, but that's just me.

Is that what you took from my post? That I am already putting Northeastern as a top 10 team? The only thing conveyed by what I typed was that the excuses for Notre Dame getting swept and waxed one night are pretty pathetic. They got outskated, outhustled and out-goalied especially. That simple. It will happen to Northeastern again this season and already has.

What I am taking from your posts is that my team seems to have a little more class and humility than some of the NE posters I guess. You obviously weren't among those who made the trip west because despite every opportunity to act like over reaching fools the NE fans who watched their team win last weekend were pretty cool. If you don't think an illness as bad as what I have heard has been making its way around a few college sports teams the last few weeks would make a team look like Notre Dame did Friday you obviously have never tried to compete athletically at an elite level. It's not an excuse. It's a reason. And if you thought NE outskated ND on Saturday you must have missed most of the game. Most teams that outskate other teams usually manage more than 5 shots on goal for two periods. You are right about the goalies though.

If you think that the results of the weekend are a fair reflection of NU rather than indicative of a poor showing by ND, then NU is a top five team. I say this because ND's body of work outside of the weekend says that ND is a top five team.

If you think that a poor showing by ND was involved, then I think it's fair to speculate as to contributing factors to a poor showing by ND.

I'd like to think that I've seen enough Jeff Jackson ND hockey over the past six years to identify a poor ND effort irrespective of the things that the opponent does to make things difficult for the Irish, but my view may be colored by the result from the previous night and my desire to see ND bounce back from it, even though I didn't watch that game.

FWIW, watching online, I thought the game looked pretty even through the first ~two periods as far as effort goes, though ND was far from sharp, and then ND looked terrible in the third period. I don't think it's wrong to say that NU outskated ND there. The shot disparity goes more toward NU closing up shop and trying to bank the win than it does ND outskating NU.

Irish, cut the posters a bit of slack. Some of us were "unprepared" and are still recovering from the shock of this past weekend. No one expected events to unfold as they did.

A couple of thoughts: NU (NOT NE) has not shown itself to be a team that gives away the puck by throwing a lot of grade B and C shots at the net. I believe that we've been outshot in 14 of 15 games this year. We've lost seven of those and tied two.

On Friday ND played like a boxer who had been knocked on his butt three times in the first round and never really got the cobwebs cleared out. The only one who looked like he might have been ill was Johnson. Fortunately, he appeared to recover nicely within 24 hours.

For reasons that are unknown to me, the stars seemed to align for the three teams in Hockey East with new coaches.
NU, Lowell and Providence each swept opponents who, according to the preseason prognosticators, should have cleaned their digital clocks. I'm sure it has happened before, but I am at a loss to remember when.

Please, I'm not bragging about anything. I have said in previous posts which you probably didn't read that UND obviously had one of "those nights" on Friday. Just don't make excuses is all.
It's not really the people in here, it was the CCHA blogger who conveyed it in an excuse type of manner. For all she knows, half of Northeastern could've had ailments also. I'm certainly not going to use that as an excuse for why we started 1-7.

We're on a run, it may stop, it may continue, we'll find out. I have never implied more than that.

Not the best logic. Beating a top 5 team twice doesn't make you a top 5 team if you lose games with 7 minutes of powerplay to end the third/OT and tie against what now could be inferior squads like UMASS (assuming this streak isn't a fluke). So no, in no way am I saying we are top 5. I stated in the Week 9 rankings thread that we aren't top 10 and don't deserve to be HM because we are still under .500%. I said this to a fellow NU fan. I just don't care for hearsay excuses that's all. NU outskated UND this particular weekend, that's it. If the weekend is replayed 5 times, UND probably wins at least 3 of those times.
