Norwich Hockey - Time to Regroup

(Potentionally no charge to viewers, but the schools could change that if they wish.) The cost for the package is paid by the school, so it isn't really free.

Norwich always had above average video production when they did it themselves, and generally with NSN. Because of the NEHC breakup, and the move to LEC, the league required moving to Flo. I can't say I know much about what the other LEC teams that were not in the NEHC did before this.
Flo Sports does not do any video production themselves. They take what the schools give them. And that includes audio.

I hadn't watched any til the Plattsburgh consi. Now that you mention it, I should have realized that Layer Eight provided the audio, and the video.

Man, No more Cadet Hockey until 2026! Sigh, I do not know what I am gonna do until then. The $6 pitchers of Risers at Good Measure are the only thing keeping me from going insane! Really impressed with this team's grit this year. Yes, I know they haven't won every game, but this team plays hard with a lot of fight! This team really is missing Domina, he sure could win a face-off!!! Would love to see a more successful power play second half of the season, I know Dawes is a mastermind and will figure it out with the help of Steve. Also shoutout to Joe Schubert first goal of many more to come. Let me know what you guys are thinking about this first bit of the season. LETS FRIGGIN GO CADETS

This is the part I wish people would have better knowledge of instead of just bitching about FloSports.

Flo is just the outlet that the video is being streamed on. The school is still doing the production. This isn’t like NSN where they come in and do the entire production with their people and stream it etc.

But ... to carry that point forward, FloSports is charging quite a lot for inconsistent production values which they have no control over. Not exactly a winning business model.

Any interest in bringing the discussion back to Cadet hockey? Flint?
Happily.

One of my main takeaways from last weekend was I don't think we will ever know how much not having Walcarius available hurt the team last season. I've said it before, but I think he is very, very good. By the end of 2024-25 I thought Sami was very average and I'm sure it was a result of having to play every game (I believe Bryce made one start last year). Glad to see him this season, and impressed with how he has played.

Kinda bummed about the way the schedule worked out this year. Granted, we usually only got one or two games in December but a whole month without Cadet hockey sucks.

These last couple of weeks prove that hockey, and a majority of their other sports teams) at Norwich as we’ve known it is no more.

After several years of poor leadership (2018 - Current), the University needs to regroup and rethink what they’re doing. The school can’t recruit, can’t offer competitive financial aid, and they can’t attract top level talent. Sad story in Northfield currently.
I understand the lack of resources for financial aid, we at NY state schools have faced that forever. With the rich history at Norwich that should be a great base to restart.

Heading into the long December break, perhaps we can stir up some hockey discussion to tide us over.

A couple of thoughts from the first "half":
- I'd love to play Curry again. I think it's a much better hockey game now than it was then.
- The only game I'd really like to have back is UMB. That one sticks in my craw.
- I hope to see a more balanced Molu/Walcarius rotation after the break.
- D'Ancona can and should make a run at LE RoTY.

Bold prediction: With the bulk of the tough ones at Kreitzberg, NU doesn't lose an LEC game the rest of the year.

Anxious to read about the excuses so bring ‘em on folks.
Nazareth was good. Cadets were flat for the whole first period. Got outplayed for about 60% of the game.

I still think they come out very timid against good teams and spend the early part of games on their heels. Not sure why.

Sami, to me, has looked just “ok” for much of this year.

Finally, an OT loss against a good team. I get as frustrated as anyone when they lose - any game - but I don’t know that last night was “anxious to hear the excuses” worthy (beyond a crappy first period).

Potentially first time Norwich isn’t playing in their holiday tournament championship?

Don’t remember concretely from my days putting the program together but I almost think this is.

Regardless, as you said Nazareth is a good team and if you aren’t coming to play from opening whistle nowadays it can lead to subpar results.

Flint, how was the quality of NU’s shooting today? Yikes, 3-2 against a cellar dweller…
I mean, the shot disparity was staggering. I thought Misericordia’s goalie played well. The Cadets clearly carried play all night and it didn’t feel like a close game, despite the score. Sloppy in their own zone at times, one occasion resulted in the Cougars second goal.

Misericordia played tough after going down early to Cortland yesterday, and I thought Cortland looked pretty good so there’s something there for the cougars future if they stay the course.

I really don’t like to name players on here but two things from the tournament I need to comment on. 1. Ocean Fancy takes way too many penalties. Talented kid but FFS. 2. Colin Elliott has a new PP habit of camping out in front of the crease and trying this slow, gentle little turnaround wrister and I hate it. Probably tried it 4-6 times this weekend.

To my eyes, Norwich plays up or down to the level of their opponent most nights. Really good teams bring it every night regardless.

I’m still a buyer on Dawes, and I’ll be disappointed in less than an LEC “regular season championship” (dumbest term in sports btw), but I think it’ll be year 2 or 3 before we really see a real return to form for the Cadets (IF the school supports recruiting properly).

Last thing sticking in my craw. The “fans” aren’t helping the boys at all. There’s no juice in that building whatsoever. Used to be an intimidating place to play. Sure, the team was better but the crowds were large, loud, and energetic . A raucous crowd absolutely helps the home team and the Cadets get nothing from the Kreitzberg faithful.

Positives: Brady Harroun played tonight. If you know his story, pretty awesome. Stahlbaum continues to be a nice addition. Frankie D’Ancona reminds me of a McShane forward; fast, shifty, skilled. I continue to be a fan of Walcarius. Given his circumstances, really cool to see him play and play pretty well.

Flint, your overall assessment of NU’s play tonight? Aside from Elliott’s two, anyone standout? Thanks.
I thought Sami was pretty sharp. Outside of the usual "Steady Eddies" I thought Kashul and Benjamin played well. I've been impressed with Schubert's improvement this year; IMO he has come a long way. I love watching Brazo, Thibodeau, and Bertrand. High effort kids.

Of note, the Cadets have consistently put together really good second periods, and generally thirds (aside from allowing a couple late goals recently). I know Dawes is "doing more" later in the week and I think the conditioning result is paying off.
