Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Has anyone run across a video link to a local Vermont Sports TV News feed that shows highlights of the NU victory over CSC? Can you please post that link on this thread? Many thanks.:)
I keep looking, and haven't found anything. I'm beginning to wonder if they even showed up. After all, UVM was playing some bouncey ball or something. (Their hockey team certainly isn;t worth watching.)

The only TV station that was there was WCAX and it doesn't look like they have a highlights package up right now on their site.

I'll see if I can talk to Ashley or Scott today to get it up for everyone to see. Kyle Thomas' goal was incredible even though WCAX missed the most explosive part where he split the two defenseman.

CSC Dad,
You are to be commended for a thoughtful and well reasoned response. College students will be college students. Sorry about your wife's experience at Norwich! Even though it sounds like you no longer have a student at Castleton I hope you continue to follow and support DIII hockey and maybe make it to another NU-Castleton game some day.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Where to start?? The bad Castleton fans – well on February 16, 2008 I had my first experience of attending a Norwich- Castleton game in Northfield. This was my second visit to Norwich as I attended the semi-finals the previous year but Castleton played NEC.

My experience might open some eyes of the Norwich fans. It seems due a quirk in the seat numbering the seats around the visiting team bench are split up. My three tickets had the seats consecutively numbered but one of the three was behind the visitor’s bench and the other two tickets were closer to the Blue Line. No problem for my family, however a family of 4 Castleton fans were separated the same as we were, however the Mother was scared to sit there with her young daughter because of the behavior of a FEW Cadets. They were perched behind the Castleton bench trying to distract the players and their language was not very nice. I had my wife and daughter move over with me to let the other family sit together where they felt more comfortable.

As the game started the Cadets seated behind Castleton the bench were constantly pounding on the glass yelling profanities at the players. It got so bad my wife spoke to them and they were very disrespectful to her as well. She however quickly quieted them by simply addressing one of loudest Cadets by his last name. She politely asked if he wished her to go report them to the arena staff. They got very quiet quickly and then left because they were not going to be able to harass the Castleton players for the entire game.

My point is that at a sporting event fans from either team can get on the people’s nerves even the highly disciplined Cadets of Norwich. As long as they do not impair the viewing of the game then why make such a fuss.

However I do remember that after the Norwich-Castleton game the previous year (in Rutland) a Norwich fan telling me that if had been in Norwich the students who used an off-color cheer during the game would be escorted out of the arena because Norwich does not tolerate that behavior. Well, I experienced it in Northfield and not one arena official even came down to the area even though these Cadets did not have tickets for that area.

I get the Norwich point of view as I live in a community that supports an Air Force base. In fact my wife teaches children of service families (which is why she was so quick to address the Cadet by his last name since she sees military families every day of the school year). Your expectations of behavior are different from the general public but don’t let that cloud your view of others who are not subject to the same expectations.

As for the T-Shirts at the game, it seems that Castleton once again just does not have the right to express themselves at their home rink. Frankly, I will take their method of expression over the Cadets choice of expression back at the 2008 game. As for them copying other teams – well back in the early 90’s I attended a Phillies-Mets game in Philadelphia as saw Mets fans parading around the stadium with similar T-Shirts that replaced the first letter of the first word with PH. The idea is not new.

Finally, as for the “AARP” reference of previous poster, there are a number of older followers of Castleton as well. Norwich does tend to have a large number of Alumni that follow the team and as the years go by then it happens. I happen to fit that description as a Castleton fan; however I can’t go to many games as it is a 5 hour trip to Rutland and it would be 6 hours to Northfield.

Please, Norwich fans, understand that the things that bug you about Castleton are a result of the team being new to D3 hockey. The fans will make what you feel are errors in judgment, but over time as whole they will become better versed as more established team’s fans have become. Give them time before you judge them so harshly. They are now approaching an average attendance of 800 people which is great considering that when I started following them for the 2005-2006 season they averaged only 295 people - an admirable increase for any program.
+2

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

As a CSC fan, I have to throw my two cents into this conversation. What I think Norwich fans forget to realize is that the fan base for CSC is student based. I'm 25 and did not to go to CSC but I've grown up in Rutland and played my high school games at Spartan Arena(formerly known as Rutland Fieldhouse). I've watched the Castleton program go from a team that my high school could beat easily to a D3 contender in less than a decade. Fans are still forming and with the school continuing to grow and flourish in other sports outside of just hockey I believe it will take some time to grow a more "seasoned" fan base. If you went to the game on Saturday you noticed that all the Norwich fans were AARP card caring members. In 30 or 40 years there probably won't be any Norwich fans at the Norwich CSC game anymore.QUOTE]

According to your post, I should quit work and retire at the age of 53!:) And all the kids and young families I see at Kreitzberg, must be my dementia:eek:

Seriously folks, a game is a game, and last Saturday, we as fans were treated well by both teams by having them play so intensely. Let's pay attention to the players and be less interested in who said, wore, or gestured in the stands. There will always be someone who gets too carried away, but I'm so intent on the game, I usually don't notice, or at least give the offender any attention to edge him/her on. If it gets out of hand, I have seen the Kreitzberg arena staff make visits to the offending row of seats, so I trust that they are doing their job so that I can enjoy the game.

I look forward to another Castleton game with Norwich, both teams are very entertaining and skilled. And no, I won't be wearing a T shirt, it's too cold in the arena for my old bones:D

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I dont know why you people are getting so up tight over the AARP thing. 99% of schools would do anything to have the kind of following Norwich does. And yes compared to the majority of DIII fan bases, Norwich has a much "older" following. With the amount of noise they make who the heck cares! Comparative to an Oswego or Geneseo where probably 75-80% are student or younger adults Norwich is going to appear older.

they are doing something right............it is fun to poke at :D

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

AARP, come on that is dumping on us old guys. Last season we averaged about 500 students to Norwich home games with a high of 800 at the Middlebury game. I know I am almost 71 so I am dragging up the average. The tee shirt thing stinks, I think I saw one today that said, "Suck Fartans" much more appropriate for ARRP folks. Rest assured you won't see it in the rink.:D:D;)

LOL! I think Suck Fartans is hilarious, tushay Cadets tushay! I hate to keep going on this shirt topic because it's pretty ridiculous to begin with but it's not a new idea at all. Yankee fans have thousands of shirts out with Buck Foston and I know there are Yuck Fankees shirts to. I don't take it seriously and can enjoy the humor and creativity, regardless of who does it. I'm sorry(but not surprised though) that some of you were offended by the "old" comment. You may not all be AARP card caring members, but you sure aren't students anymore that's for sure :). I respect my elders and I respect all of the Cadet fan posters as it almost seems like they are the ones running this d3 hockey forum. You can't look at a thread without seeing a name with NU in the title somewhere. My whole point was trying to get you all to understand that not every school has the fan base that Norwich does or the history. CSC has a wide range of fans, from bandwagoners, to students, to random people in town just enjoying a hockey game. We don't have the biggest of arenas, nor do we have an arena that is on campus. As CSC Dad(great post by the way) pointed out, Norwich is no perfect institution. Teams like Norwich and Midd. have sat atop a pedestal untouched for years, its fun to see the pedestal start to show some signs of a aging, and eventual collapse.

I hope to see a CSC/Norwich final in the ECAC E playoffs. It would be a great end of year showdown after two hard fought regular season battles.

Can't we all just get along?

Thanks, yes my son was part of the first group of recruits Coach Todd brought to Castleton. They were a great group of kids and worked hard to change the program and in my biased view they succeeded. They we so bold as to not lose the first game they played.

I will certainly be at more Norwich-Castleton games in the future. Heck, I went to Citizens Bank
Park and watched Neumann play Penn State and it was a great experience. I have even watched games that the junior team my son coaches on the Internet, so I'll watch any hockey.

My experience at Norwich was not that bad, but it shows that college students don't always remember to be on their best behavior. The situation was diffused fairly quickly as the pesky last name on the fatigues made it real easy to identify the culprits if it had gotten out of hand. I would never harp on that situation and use it as a measuring stick for Norwich fans.

I just hope that more Norwich fans would understand that they were in the same situation as Castleton fans are in a long time ago. They seemed to have turned out alright so let Castleton's fans grow with their team.

Sounds like a good idea Junior ... hope to see you at Kreitzberg in a couple of weeks ... if you get there come by the broadcast booth and say hello!

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

Prez are you going to place any highlights from the Castleton/Norwich game on the Norwich web site. I would like to see the Kyle Thomas play in the first period where he went in alone to tie the game.

If I owned the rights to the highlights, they'd already be up. However, Castleton owns the rights to the NSN broadcast and until we get the okay to use them, I can't put anything up. (Not that I have anything to put up anyway at the moment).

Holding pattern unfortunately. Hopefully WCAX puts the highlights up.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

To those reasonable CSC fans like the very proud CSC Dad (a first class post by the way)--I know that we look forward to a growing competitive relationship between both schools. Your kids played a great game and deserve all the accolade that have been paid to your program throughout the season. The next meeting should exciting. And to be honest, when Norwich's old Taylor Hockey arena only sat enough for the Corp--while there may have been no insulting T Shirts--the our Student/Cadet fans could be a boorish bunch. Some things never change.:(

As for the Norwich alumni fans--regardless of age--this subject has come up before. Fans at civilian schools that face schools like Norwich, VMI, the Citadel and the Academies just do not understand the lifelong relationship a cadet has with his school, the Corp and his classmates. Many times those brotherhood bonds continue into the service as mine did in Vietnam. I will not dwell on that but at more than one Norwich away hockey game opposing fans have marveled to me at the number and diversity of the alum/fan base we turn out. I guess you just have to spend four years in uniform... on "The Hill" ...and in the Corp to get what I am talking about.

And to "thatswhatshesaid" Did you say "Toshay?" Actually I think the word you are searching for was touché . Meanwhile I would pass on using it until you (A.) learn how to spell it and by all means (B.) stay away from all sharp insturments ;) until you understand its etymological French roots.

As for your remark, "Teams like Norwich and Midd. have sat atop a pedestal untouched for years, its fun to see the pedestal start to show some signs of a aging, and eventual collapse." I cannot speak for Middlebury--but I didn't seem much Cadet aging last Saturday at Spartan Arena...and the only sign of collapsing by Norwich ended at 12:54 of the 1st Period when NU started a 3 minute and 23 second--3 gaol scoring drive that erased CSC's two goal lead. :D

But I agree with Puck Voice--I am sure we all look forward to welcoming CSC's return to our barn, our continued and growing rivalry--but please "thatswhatshesaid" check the spelling on your T Shirt before you arrive.:D

Isn't that the movie where he wears a shirt for like every school in the America/Hockey East?

It's a very good movie. i am pretty sure he wears a shirt or hat of each of the six New England State University plus some of the NE Ivy League Schools. It's fun trying to search them all out during the movie.

Any word when playoff tickets will be available? Season ticket holder here.....

Adam Sandler took a break from filming to be the guest speaker at the 2010 Graduation of his Alma Mater (Manchester Central High School) in Manchester, New Hampshire. His niece was a member of the graduating class.

Adam Sandler wears a different New England area college shirt or hat in nearly every scene. The colleges that Sandler can be spotted wearing are University of Connecticut (hat), University of Massachusetts (t-shirt), Harvard (t-shirt) with a University of New Hampshire hat, University of Rhode Island (hat), and Boston University (sweatshirt). He is also seen wearing a Whalers Hockey t-shirt.

So says this.

Ok math guy's please tell me if I got this right. If psu beats oswego norwich would be ranked #1. If Oswego wins every thing stays the same. (asuming NU sweeps the weekend)

To be honest at this point in the season I am not sure it really matters. Actually, I have tried to work it out a couple of scenarios but, i have to assume that every coach has some wounded warriors like McShane that he'd like to rest. With a lock on the ECAC-E regular season title why would NU risk someone who needs a timeout. Even if Oswego were to lose to Plattsburg--they win SUNYAC and home ice so then it becomes subjective for those who vote in the polls. The real interesting case is if OSU were to lose to PSU and then ties Potsdam--then it gets real messy with PSU winning SUNYAC by virtue of head-to-head competition. But like I said, seeding, resting players and home ice are the critical issue I would think and the polls become less meaningful.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2011-2012: In Search of a Title

I know this is the Norwich women and not the men but its still Maroon and Gold none the less and I thought our large following of posters ought to see this highlight.

Check of the highlights from Tuesday's 5-3 win over No. 4-ranked Middlebury at Kreitzberg. Jillayne DeBus' goal to put NU up 3-2 is SportsCenter top play worthy.
