Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Attendance is the least of NMU's worries right now.... How about scoring some goals and winning some games.... That mite be a good place to start.... NMU is currently (3-11-2) after 16 games (with 20 left to play) and ranked #57 out of 60 teams in The NCAA D1 Pairwise Rankings so something has to give this weekend up in Alaska.... Alaska-Anchorage is ranked #60 and is considered to be the worst team in D1 college hockey right now so if NMU loses up there it would be catastrophic for the team, the program, the University, the fans and for Walt and his staff....

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

If NMU gets "Broomed" up in Alaska this weekend they will be the worst team in NCAA D1 hockey by being the 60th ranked team in the country by Pairwise.... NMU is currently ranked #57 and Alaska-Anchorage is last at #60.... You can't get any lower than this!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's not 100% how PWR works.

The Pairwise is incredibly inaccurate until late in the season. It is not designed for midseason standing. It is designed for the season as a whole. Polls are voted on by people who haven't seen most teams play.

So who are the top 20 NCAA D1 hockey teams in the country at any given time???? Do you believe USCHO.com Poll, USA Today Poll, Pairwise Rankings, RPI Rankings, KRACH, etc???? I thought the Pairwise was the most accurate D1 college hockey ranking system????

Here is an official explanation of the Pairwise Ranking System:

The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI. For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won. Ties are settled by the RPI. Note: A team's record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which are eligible for the NCAA Tournament.

Here is an official explanation of the RPI Ranking System:

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is one tool used to select teams for the national collegiate ice hockey tournament. Factors involved are 1) the team's winning percentage; 2) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents; 3) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents' opponents. These factors are multiplied by 25%, 21%, and 54% respectively and the contribution of each individual game is weighted by a factor of 1.2 for a road win or home loss and 0.8 for a home win or road loss. In addition, a quality wins bonus based on wins against the top 20 teams is added to a team's RPI. A Team's RPI is adjusted to remove negative effect from defeating a weak opponent. Note: A team's record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which are eligible for the NCAA Tournament.

Just curious... anyone know when the last time was NMU was ranked last? Wondering, if they get there, if it will be the first time.

They were ranked in the polls early in the year in 2014 I believe. It has been a while however.

This is not the only time NMU has been ranked however. Pretty sure they got as high as 10th or so in my 13 years following the program. Obviously they were better than 15th in the Pairwise to end 2010 as well.

I don't believe in polls; I used to have a vote in the USCHO poll, and invalidates it. I vote in THG's WCHA Poll only through the use of my rating system.

When you say "accurate" and "reliable", what do you mean? For me, accuracy means that it's a reasonable measure of team quality; for "reliability", it's the repeatable nature of the system. I wouldn't give a subjective voting poll any standing for either. An automated ranking system (PWR, KRACH, my BELOW) is better in both regards, but the first two start from zero every year, so it takes a while to zero in on who is good. I think that BELOW gets there faster, but it's new so I won't try to claim reliability.

NMU's lack of offense this season so far????
NMU has been shut out (5) times in (5) losses....
NMU only scored (1) goal in (3) other losses....
This lack of goal production is killing them!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Obviously it's all Walt's fault that the 'Cats can't light the lamp. It's so tough to score a goal while standing behind the bench. A real coach would be out on that ice scoring goals for his team himself!

(Wait, no? That's not how that works?)

Looking at a 5th consecutive losing campaign if things don't swing in the complete opposite direction by years end. Since the 2012-13 season, NMU's record is currently 62-85-21. Where exactly would you place the blame? While the coaches cannot score goals from the bench they do recruit, adapt to the talent at their disposal, and prepare a system which best leads towards success. I'll leave it to the defenders of the realm to explain why we have the results which are being witnessed by so few these days.

While he can't score the goals, he is the one that has put this program together. Enough years of the same thing (worse this year) have made me finally turn to the dark side. I am finally ready for a new coach.

Just curious? Who do you think you'll be able to attract that will definitely improve your program? Will he be able to do it within the current financial constraints? We've been changing coaches for 20 years and still dream of topping .500.

Do you want a mid-season change? Hey, maybe you can get Gwozdecky? Could Shyiak bring you all the wins he couldn't find in Anchorage? Jim Roque is available. Tom Anastos might be soon too!

I hate to beat the drum, but I don't see any other option. He is either not recruiting talent or not using the talent that he has at his disposal. Either way...

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

I was willing to go along with this downslide back when it started in 2011/12. Unfortunately were now in the 6th season of this slide. And this slide has been the worst 5-year span n the program's history. It's becoming clearer that this isn't random chance.

There are 4 months left in this season. The current staff needs to do SOMETHING to make their case for staying. Motivate the current crop of players to achieve something. We haven't won a playoff series since 2010. I want to back this team... I'm really starting to feel like the school doesn't care for this team as much as I do however.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

What will it take to turn the NMU hockey program around into a winning program again???? The NMU hockey ship is sinking fast and it's either time to "Jump Ship" or get things back to being competitive again so what will it take to get this done???? If NMU gets swept this weekend up in Alaska they will have hit rock bottom and will be low man on the totem pole in the D1 college hockey world.... Not something to be very proud of that's for sure!!!!!!!!!!!

What are the answers????

Bring in a new coaching staff????
Recruit different style players????
Use different schemes on the bigger ice sheet????
Try to get a bigger recruiting budget????
Join a different conference????
