Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

NMU Hockey looks to rekindle offense at Wisconsin this weekend

November 2nd, 2016

MARQUETTE - The biggest struggle for the 2016-17 Northern Michigan hockey team (2-5-1) so far has been scoring goals. Right now, the team just hasn't been very consistent, but having a guy like Dominik Shine back in the lineup certainly helps.

One team the Wildcats did have success against offensively is the Wisconsin Badgers. Northern scored 8 goals in the two games they played against the Badgers (4-2-0) earlier in the season in Green Bay and this weekend, they meet again in Madison.

Coach Walt Kyle thinks the key for his team is getting off to a fast start.

"You have to generate offense from the minute the puck drops and if you can do something early and get one or two behind you then I think we have shown more of an ability to then throw some pucks in," said Kyle.

"We look at every game as if you're going out there to score goals. You gotta get more goals than the other team to win, right, so it's a big factor when coming into those games this weekend since we did score a few goals against them the first time we played them," added senior defenseman Brock Maschmeyer.

The puck drops in Madison Friday at 8 P.M. Eastern.

Wow, what insight...let's hope the pain stops this weekend!

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

An old Hockey Proverb says "You can't win a Hockey game if you don't score a Goal"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Nice job guys!

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Great game by NMU last nite.... Finally some offense to talk about.... Dominik Shine with (2) goals was good to see.... Hopefully he'll continue to score for NMU and help get their offense going....

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Time for the old Hockey proverb again - "You can't win a Hockey game if you don't score a Goal" after NMU gets shut out last nite by Wisconsin in Madison (2-0).... That's (4) "Goose Egg" shutouts that NMU has put up so far this season in the (10) games that they've played!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Current PairWise Rankings for U.P. Hockey teams:

#21 - LSSU (6-2-0)
#37 - MTU (4-6-2)
#47 - NMU (3-6-1)

A weekend sweep of Bowling Green at The Berry this weekend will be a great way to spark the NMU hockey team.... This year's team seems to be a "Jekyll & Hyde" outfit just like last weekend down in Madison.... A great (5-2) win on Friday nite and then another (2-0) "Goose Egg" shutout loss on Saturday nite.... NMU needs to bring a broom to the rink and start getting some sweeps in order to get this season turned around otherwise it will be another long cold winter on the shore of Lake Superior in Marquette.... Being out of contention early in the season isn't much fun as a fan and I'm sure the NMU players don't like it either....

Where have you gone, Mike Santorelli, Pat Bateman, Nathan Oystrick, Darin Olver, etc?

Retired from hockey, retired from hockey, assistant coach of the ECHL Atlanta Gladiators, and playing professionally in Germany for the last decade. Respectively.

Bowling Green (2-7-1) @ NMU (3-6-1) this weekend at The Berry Events Center in Marquette.... Any thoughts or comments on this series????

Can the Falcons stop the bleeding in Goals Allowed (36 in 10GP)? Only two WCHA teams have given up more goals: Alabama-Huntsville (47 in 12GP) and Alaska (37 in 10GP). Chris Nell was reputed as one of the best, but the stats don't lie: he's up about a goal a game and has gone from .930 to .866. When Tomas Shall is in the lineup, that's not good.

BG has been snakebite all year and has been inconsistent the last season-and-a-half —*just look at the five Kevin Gordon BGSUHockey.com notebooks on consistence in 2016 alone. I know that Chris Bergeron has to be frustrated.

My BELOW tool doesn't much like either team; BG has been in free-fall all year. Ferris State and BG have three conference wins between the two of them, with two coming in a series split.

This league has typically been separated into three strata since realignment: three at the top, three or four in the middle, and four or three at the bottom. Now it's looking something like 3-2-5, and again, that's because BG has a nice head start with how BELOW regresses to the mean. [In the morning, there'll be a new piece about what happens if we assume that all teams are league average at the start of the season. Maybe I'll remember to post it here.]

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Cat's beat and tied Ferris on Ferris' home ice. Cat's haven't won at home against BGSU since February 2014. (To be fair, this weekend will be the fourth and fifth game since that last home win vs BGSU). If the 'Cats couldn't sweep Ferris three weeks ago after Ferris had already lost six in a row, the 'Cats are going to have trouble against BGSU.

That said, this team CAN do it. We've seen spits and spurts from this team that show their ability. GOTTA piece it together again. Need to play every game like it's Friday night against Wisconsin or Friday night against Ferris.

Has anyone heard if NMU is doing anything for the 40th anniversary this season? Having any of the 80, 81, or 91 teams come drop the puck?

There was a team reunion this summer. This is the 41st season.

NMU's "Jekyll & Hyde" season continues this weekend with Bowling Green in town???? A home sweep at The Berry would be huge for the Cats!!!!!!!

Mathematically correct, we are in the 41st season of the program; but October 29th, 1976 at Lakeview versus St. Louis University was the first game of the program. October 29th, 1976 minus November 11th, 2016 = 40 years and two weeks.

Or... The 40th Anniversary.

Lake State is celebrating their 50th Anniversary and their first game was in 1966 (of the 1966/67 season). They're in their 51st season too, yet they have fancy 50th Anniversary logos on their website and celebrating five all decade teams.

Yes, the reunion was nice, but what is being done *this season* that would be of interest to fans to come to games?

Fans? Your fans wanted beer in the arena? You got beer (and upgraded food too), no more fans. They wanted winning hockey. They were 4-0-4 at home with a ranked UMD coming in, 2,000, maybe. They wanted a video board. You got one of those. Sure, the house was packed for Tech, but you got 1800 for Bemidji and I wonder if you'll match that for Bowling Green, Omaha or Huntsville. Hockeyville USA?
